Edward refused to explain anything to me. I tried threatening him… but there is very little to threaten Edward about; besides me leaving him, and I would never leave Edward.

He stashed some bags containing clothes and money into the trunk of Carlisle’s Mercedes, and took off. It didn’t bother me so much anymore that he drove like a madman; it bothered me that he didn’t tell me where we were going.

“Edward!” I said when he narrowly made hairpin turns. “When are you going to tell me what’s going on? When we’re in Mexico?”

Edward didn’t look away from the road; he didn’t even glance at me. He closed his eyes and then spoke. I tried to keep my mind off the winding road. “Jasper… He wants you.”

“And so?” I remembered when James hunted me. It had been the most terrifying experience of my life; mainly because I Edward was not by my side. It didn’t even bother me that James wanted to torture me to death…

“You don’t understand, Bella. Jasper wants you. For a mate.” My mouth dropped open at Edward’s shocking deliverance of words.

“A m-mate?” I couldn’t bring myself to think of the words. “W-Why?”

Edward seemed to be in pain as he spoke. “Alice… is dead.” I wanted to scream. Alice, my best friend, was dead.

“How can that be?” I managed to choke out.

“Jasper - killed her. I don’t know why. When I was reading his mind, he told me that he killed Alice.” If Edward could cry, he probably would be at that moment. The memories of Alice’s cheery demeanor flooded my mind, and tears began to fall. Edward held me to his chest in attempt to stop the flow of tears.

I knew there would be no more explanations.

What bloody man is that? He can report,
As seemeth by his plight, of the revolt
The newest state.
