“Alice - a vision?” We had left the café in haste, and gone back to our hotel room. I sat beside Edward, watching his face, while Emmett and Rosalie sat across from us on a red and gold striped loveseat. “How can that be?” Edward buried his face in his hands.

“Jasper said he killed Alice. Could his words have a second meaning?” I asked, the idea hitting me like a brick. Three sets of butterscotch eyes flashed to me. “Maybe he meant he killed her metaphorically?”

“It’s plausible…” Rosalie said, touching her fingertips to Emmett’s arm.

“If he didn’t really kill Alice, then why is she in New York?” Emmett wondered aloud. Then he seemed to be having an epiphany. He stared at Edward, who was still stunned by the whole situation. “Edward - what was happening in that vision?”

Edward pursed his lips. “It was too dark to see anything, really. All I saw in that vision was a dark room. And then a door opened, and a figure appeared in the light. And then it was over.”

I leaned back against the couch. Snow had just begun to fall outside our window. Christmas is just a week away! I heard an overly cheerful voice announce from below. I got up and went to the window, sticking my head out momentarily. I caught a glance of a man dressed in a Santa suit, wringing a bell in his gloved hand and standing next to a sandwich board. He was asking for donations to go towards heart research. I smiled at this, and touched my fingers to my chest. I had just received a new heart, and I was thankful for all the heart researchers had done for me.

I reached into my pocket and pulled out a wad of cash, hoping that I wouldn’t miss his bucket as I tossed it downward. Down, down, down spiraled the little ball. Finally, it landed surprisingly close to that man. He looked up, and smiled, as if the money had been sent from above. I heard him dump it into his bucket. I was surprised that Christmas was only a week away. This time last year, I would’ve been hanging up tacky directions to our fireplace back in Phoenix while people sang off-key renditions of ‘Jingle Bells’ while they skated by in their shorts and tank tops.

“Edward…” I twisted around. Emmett and Rosalie were kneeling on the carpet, staring at Edward. Edward was gazing at something far, something distant. He opened his eyes to see me bounding towards him.

It didn’t take a genius to see what had happened. Edward moved, in abrupt motions, and I found his arms wrapped around me. Edward spoke.

“He’s here.”

The measure done, I'll watch her place of stand,
And, touching hers, make blessed my rude hand.
Did my heart love till now? forswear it, sight!
For I ne'er saw true beauty till this night.
