“Edward… I think Jasper is closer than we think…” I said. Edward’s eyes flashed to my face.

“What makes you say that?” His tone was almost angry.

“I can… feel him.” I whispered.

Edward did not answer. Instead, he stepped down harder on the gas pedal and we lurched forward. His phone was to his ear. The words he spoke came out quickly. I managed to pick out ‘he’s close’ and ‘speed up’. The rest was just a mess of toddler speak.

“What are we going to do now?” I ventured to ask.

“Bella… Are you sure it was Jasper?” Edward asked, turning to stare at me.

“Of course I am, Edward.” I replied, raising an eyebrow. “Can’t you hear him?”

“No.” Edward turned squarely to face the road. A fire seemed to dance in his gold irises.

Maybe I was wrong. But when I felt that sudden shift of mood on my body, it had been something I only experienced while around Jasper. He was near, and why Edward could not hear him; I did not know. I stared out the window, watching the greenery pass us by.

Then I was happy. “Edward!” I said in an overly cheerful voice. Edward turned to stare at me. “He’s close!” I sounded (And felt) like a doll with too many prerecorded messages. “I can feel him!” An uncontrolled, too-wide smile stretched across my face. I didn’t recall Jasper’s powers being so powerful.

“Bella!” Edward cried out frantically.

Then I was angry. “He’s toying with my emotions, Edward.” I snarled when I said his name. “Stop it!” Tears began to course down my cheeks, sending me into hysterics. First I was happy, then angry, then sad… What was next?

I closed my eyes and Edward growled, causing them to open again. Then for a while, it seemed all seemed to be over. I let out a sigh of relief, feeling dirty for being used like that.

“I don’t understand why I can’t hear him,” Edward said, squeezing his eyes shut. “It pisses me off.” I stared straight ahead at all the passing road signs. We were finally back in Washington. It was only a matter of time before we would be on a plane and away from Jasper’s ability to manipulate our emotions. I was confused when Edward did not make the turn that would bring us to the closest airport. When I looked asked him about this, he did not answer.

Edward reached into his pocket and fished out his phone, hitting the speed dial. Emmett picked up immediately. I could see the moving figures in the rear view mirror. “Keep driving, Emmett, just keep driving.” Edward ordered, and then he shut the phone. Edward unwillingly began to explain. I wondered if my eyebrow-raising really was as persuasive as I’d hoped.

“We’re not taking our chances and staying anywhere for one night.” Edward explained.

“So where are you planning to go?”

“Well, Rosalie called the airlines. There’s a plane leaving in Oregon in about two hours for England. We’re going to be on it.”

Have I thought long to see this morning's face,
And doth it give me such a sight as this?
