Chapter 13

“So, do you want somewhere warm or somewhere cold?” Becka asked Alex playfully. He stood there for a moment, thinking, before he smiled, glancing at Aaron and me.

“Well, I know those two aren’t the biggest fans of the hot and humid, are they?” he said thoughtfully. I groaned, knowing where he was going with this. Aaron closed his eyes and shook his head.

I walked over to Edward again. He automatically put his hand around my waist, as if he didn’t even need to think about it. I smiled slightly at him, and then raised his arm into the air.

“Alex, they can’t control whether they sparkle in the sun or not. If we went to where I think you’re thinking, we might as well get a big sign saying ‘here we are Volturi! Come and get us!’”

Becka gave me a look that I had grown to hate in the eighteen years I had known her. “What if that’s what I’m thinking of?” she asked mischievously. I shook my head.

Aaron laughed then. “I really doubt that Bella wants to see them all right now. I mean, let her arm fully reconnect itself first,” he teased, and I gave him a dark look. Edward pulled me to him tighter. I knew he was getting angry from being kept in the dark.

Alex looked at me appraisingly. “You know Bella, KJ said you had to keep that sling on until he said you could take it off. He won’t be happy if he finds out you took it off as soon as we left.”

“I did not!” I said defensively. Now Alice and Jasper were watching on in amusement. I could tell our human-like squabble were funny to them. “Alec came, and I didn’t want to have anything in the way of me being able to fight.” I moved my foot slightly as I spoke, and felt that Alec was starting to come in direction slowly. I gave Becka a quick look, and she nodded.

Edward finally spoke. “Why don’t we all go to our house,” he said carefully. “Then we can talk there. I’m sure Esme and Carlisle will be overjoyed to see you again,” he said to me now, giving me a small smile.

I shook my head. “No, we can’t do that. I think Becka was planning to go to you’re house to take them all somewhere to hide, but we can’t stay there.”

“Why not?” Alice asked.

“Because, the Volturi said they would kill you all if we ever went AWAL on them, and we did it big time,” Aaron said disdainfully. “That’s one of the reasons we didn’t escape sooner; Bella was too scared you all would get hurt.”

I nodded. “It wasn’t until I figured out another part of my powers that I realized it would be okay, since we would be able to go to you without anyone being able to trace you.”

“Speaking of which,” Becka said, glancing at the dark forest. “We need to go. Don’t ask now, but please, please don’t freak out. I don’t need more people having dizzy spells like Bella used to.”

“You always have to mock me on that.”

She beamed at me. “Of course I do. That’s my duty as your sister.”

“Wonderful,” I muttered, raising my hand slightly and putting a shield around all of us. Alice and Jasper jumped up in shock at the sudden distortion around them, while Edward looked around in wonder.

Becka grabbed my hand, and we were suddenly gone.
