“Is there any large prey to eat out in the freaking desert?” I heard Emmett exclaim somewhere in the distance. I looked at Edward, who shook his head.

“I can’t read his mind right now. For one, you’ve blocked my mind, and his. Also, it would be smarter to stay that way,” he said seriously, though he did smile crookedly.

“I agree with that statement more than you know,” Becka said seriously, giving me a hard look. “I like being able to keep some things to myself.”

Ah, now I understood the look. The research I had done with KJ, and several secrets that we would both hide that we learned from the Volturi, no matter how much we detested the place. Things that kept the world in order, and we respected that.

“Many people seem to agree with you on that,” Edward said easily. Both Becka and I laughed. No one seemed to particularly love the fact that Edward could read minds except Edward himself, and maybe the Volturi.

“I agree!” Emmett said happily. He had heard us coming over, and ran to meet us part of the way. He pulled me into a tight hug again. “God Bella, you just can never be normal can you? I mean, you can become human, and the Volturi want you for your powers.”

“Which we all love. It’s nice not having Edward in our head,” Rosalie said quietly, smiling at Edward when he scowled at her. “Hey, I’m allowed to state my opinion aren’t I?”

“Yes, I believe you are. If you can’t say what you want to Edward, then I can’t stop making fun of Bella,” Becka said smugly, walking forward. Aaron and Alex ran over.

I had that brief moment of warning before I was suddenly knocked on the ground, being smothered by two people. I squirmed a bit, but they just tightened their hold.

“Your back!” Alex exclaimed.

“Yeah, you didn’t go and kill yourself!” Aaron said happily.

“Hey, I was gone too! Why aren’t you jumping on me?” Becka asked angrily, though I could hear the smile in her voice. Aaron and Alex got off of me, and I stood up haughtily, brushing myself off. Edward pulled me to him, laughing softly.

“Well for one, you could just get away without feeling the need to stay and fight, and you’re not suicidal like Bella is,” Aaron said slyly, looking at Becka through raised eyes.

Edward stiffened next to me, and I recognized the reason. In an attempt to calm him, I looked angrily at my brother. “I am not suicidal Aaron. How many times have I told you that?”

He looked at me, extremely amused now. “Well for one, you went to save your mom as a human from a bloodthirsty vampire. Then you chose to be friends with werewolves, knowing that if they found out you were a vampire, they would all kill you. Then you jumped off a cliff while—“

I cut him off. “Jumping off a cliff can’t kill me, remember? I’m a little harder than water and rocks,” I reminded him, rolling my eyes as I tried to blow it off.

Becka was looking at Aaron in almost fascination. “You actually thought of all of that right on the spot? I’m really impressed,” she said almost reverently.

Aaron sighed. “I’m not Alex.”

Alex jumped at the sound of his name. “What? I mean, hey! I’m not that dumb!” he exclaimed angrily.

“Yes you are,” Becka, Aaron and I muttered at the same time. He crossed his arms and looked away. Emmett and Edward chuckled, while Rosalie just smiled, shaking her head.

“You all are so mean to him,” Edward murmured into my hair, taking in my scent as he did. I leaned into him, wanting more of his touch.

“No, we’re truthful,” Becka said, walking toward the cave. “Is everyone else in there?” She asked no one in particular. Rosalie nodded, and she went to the caves without another word.

Alex looked at me funny, and he suddenly came forward and grabbed one hand, and Aaron grabbed the other. Edward reflexively tightened his hold. “We need to talk to Bells alone for a moment. We promise we won’t try and kill her or anything.”

“And notice they make no promises about drugging me,” I muttered sarcastically. Both Aaron and Alex stared at me in surprise.

“You can drug a vampire?”

I rolled my eyes. “Never mind. Drag me off to wherever you wanted me to go,” I said, giving in. They both grinned, and dragged me off.

We ran down the desert, carefully shifting again to keep from sparkling. Passing the tall cacti and huge red rocks, we went through the Australian Outback in a matter of minutes. I didn’t even think we could do that.

“Okay, what’s up?” I asked as we stopped near a small town. We walked casually through the streets, blending in with the tourists and locals. No one looked at us oddly other than for our obviously not-meant-for-warm-weather outfits.

Aaron and Alex glared down at the ground. They both looked so forlorn, that I put my arms around their shoulders, pulling them to me. It must have looked funny, since I was a good half a foot shorter than both of them.

“Are you going to leave us to go with the Cullens?” Alex asked quietly, glaring up at the sun. His light eyes shined with the added brightness.

I frowned. “Of course not. I would never leave you guys, you know that,” I said gently, squeezing them both. “You’re my brothers. I could never abandon you.”

“But don’t you want to be with Edward?”

I sighed. “Of course I do. It’ll be like a big extended family thing, though. I mean, Carlisle is like my dad, and Esme’s my mom. KJ’s my uncle, and Jasmine’s my big sister. You guys are my twins. I won’t leave you and never come back. We’ll probably all live near each other anyway.”

“Why would we all live near each other?” Alex asked, confused. Aaron sighed and reached around me, smacking him hard on the side of the head.

“Dude, the Volturi is after both of our family’s! We’re going to be bumped together a bit,” he cried out, exasperated.

“Right.”

I shook my head. “Come on, let’s get back before the others worry.”
