Chapter 28

A furious roar echoed through the house. It wasn’t the first, and it wasn’t going to be the last. Everyone’s temper was pretty high right now, and Jasper wasn’t making it any better. Right now, I was the only one unaffected. I just couldn’t spread my gift, so everyone was vulnerable.

The person who roared this time was Emmett. He had taken the news that his brother had been captured the most rashly. I was extremely glad I could just block it all out and focus on getting my control back.

“Emmett, calm down. I’m sure we can work through all of this,” Carlisle said, always calm. I could imagine him placing a restraining hand on his sons shoulder.

I was sitting in one of the guest room, lying on a brown couch. It was longer than the one Edward had in Forks, and it was very comfortable to be one. I could have fallen asleep if I wasn’t so alert and working on a way to save Edward.

I smiled grimly at the irony. For so long, it had been Edward saving me. Now the tables were turned, and I was lost as how to save him. How could I save his mind from Jade when he couldn’t even open it up to me so I could block it? He was further gone in minutes than the Cullens had been in the half hour they were subjected to Jade’s ability. It seemed her gift was growing.

Just as I thought that, an idea came to me. I rushed down the stairs and to my siblings and the Cullens all sitting in the living room. They all looked up at me as I came by, and I hated the pity I saw in their faces.

“I have an idea,” I said quickly. They all looked at me, more attentive now. “If we all split up again, it’ll be harder for them to find us all. And if somehow Jade gets you, I’ll be able to stop her power on everyone. She can’t take a large crowd and put as much power into it as she can to one person.”

Carlisle’s eyes widened. “Of course!” he exclaimed, his calm façade disappearing into one of excitement. He jumped up, pulling out a cell phone and dialed a number quickly as he strode out of the room.

Esme watched him go for a moment, and then turned to me as Becka jumped up and vanished. We could all hear her quickly packing some clothes into bags. From the sound of it, she was only doing it for Aaron, Alex and I.

“I suppose you’re going on off with them, right?” she asked me sadly. I knew she hated that so soon after I returned we were all being separated again. I hated it too.

I smiled at her sadly. “Right now, I think it’s really the only way. You might all have to split up as well,” I warned her quietly, knowing the reaction that was going to come from my words.

Emmett and Rosalie each jumped up and stared at me in outrage. Jasper looked at me in shock and Alice sat there with a knowing look on her face. Esme looked slightly stunned, but nodded after glancing at Alice.

“How do expect us to do that after what happened to Edward?” Rosalie demanded furiously. I winced slightly at the mention of her brother. Emmett put a hand on her shoulder, glancing at me thoughtfully.

“I think she might be right Rose,” he said quietly. He obviously wasn’t happy with having to say the words to her, or even admitting them out loud. It made is final.

Rosalie stared at me for a long moment, before nodding. “How should we all do this?” she asked, resigned, as she turned to Esme, who pursed her lips.

“Esme and Carlisle are going to come with Jasper and I, and Rosalie and Emmett are going to go off on their own for a little while,” Alice said after going still for a moment.

As she finished, Becka appeared at the front door with several bags in a pile near her. “Well, I got our stuff,” she sighed, coming into the room with a sigh. “I think that we should leave first and try to get them all to follow us first. That’ll leave you a safer trail to go on.”

Carlisle strode back into the room with a hardened expression. Clearly, he had heard the ending of our conversation. “I suppose that sounds alright. I want us all to stay in touch though, alright?”

Everyone nodded, and he reached into his pocket and got two cell phones. He handed one to Rosalie and one to me. We both took them with a serious face.

“Well then…” Esme trailed off, clearly at loss at how to actually say goodbye to her family. My heart broke slightly more than it was already at her distress.

Suddenly, I was engulfed in a pair of large arms along with Alice, Becka and Esme. “I’m going to miss you girls so much,” Emmett said, grinning at our discomfort.

I nodded slightly. “Yes, and we’ll all miss you too Emmett,” I said, trying to squirm out of his iron gripped hug. He chuckled and let us all go.

Alice and Esme both gave me a hug. “Be careful,” they both whispered to me. I nodded, sure that if I had been human I would be crying right now.

“You too,” I said quietly, my voice cracking slightly.

They both nodded and I turned to Carlisle and Jasper, who both embraced me in warm hugs, warning me to watch my back. I said the same, and we all pulled apart.

To my surprise, Rosalie gave me a tight hug as well. “Thank you so much for protecting my brother,” she whispered quietly. “I know this all will work out in the end.”

I pulled back, stunned. “Thank you,” I whispered in awe and shock. She smiled warmly at me before backing up a few steps and nodding.

I went to my siblings, and we were gone into the shrinking word.
