Chapter Three-No Reins

She left that loser in a dust cloud
Heart in his hand, chin on the ground
Cried her last tear for that clown
She can see a little clearer now
She said, "Oh, oh, I gotta go and find me"
Oh, oh she found the strength to break free

Like a painted wild mustang
Flyin' out across the open range
Finally gets to live her life that way
No fear, no fences, nobody - no reins

No reins

All she's ever felt is held back
She says, "It's kinda nice to hear myself laugh"
She's gonna do a lot more of that
She's makin' plans and makin' tracks
She said, "Oh, oh I gotta go and find me"
Oh, oh she found the strength to break free

Like a painted wild mustang
Flyin' out across the open range
Finally gets to live her life that way
No fear, no fences, nobody - no reins

Oh-oh she's learnin' how to let go
Oh-oh which ever way the wind blows
Oh-oh she's learnin' how to let go (learnin' how to let go)

Like a painted wild mustang
Flyin' out across the open range
Finally gets to live her life that way
No fear, no fences, nobody - no reins

Like a painted wild mustang
Flyin' out across the open range
Finally gets to live her life that way
No fear, no fences, nobody - no reins

No reins
...no reins

Jennifer’s POV

I kissed Jacob Black. I kissed Jacob Black I kissed Jacob Black. It kept repeating over and over in my head the next morning as I climbed out my bedroom window and out onto the roof to watch the sunrise.

I could see the roof of Jacob’s house from where I was sitting and that made a blush climb up my neck from what I had done last night. I had sworn to myself that I wouldn’t, under any circumstances, fall in love with Jacob. And now here I was staring at his house probably with a goofy smile on my face.

Great, that’s just great. I thought sarcastically. You fall for the first guy that says a few nice words to you. So what if he imprinted, it doesn’t really mean anything. But the words sounded false even in my head.

Maybe I’ll just go for a few days hike. I decided as the sun started to peek up above the tree tops. I climbed back into my room and started throwing things into my backpack. First a small tent for one person, then a blanket, then 2 changes of clothes and extra socks. With all that in there, there was hardly any space for food so I decided to fit in whatever I could.

When I walked downstairs my mom was already at the table. “Going somewhere honey?” She asked staring at the pack on my back.

“I wanted to go for about a two day hike. I have a map and I want to try to get to this little lake in the middle of the forest.

“Well you can go as long as you take someone with you.”

“But mom, I’ve been hiking by myself for years!” I whined.

“Yes, but this area is known for bears and other wild animals, so you don’t go unless you find someone to go with you” She said, standing up to get another mug of coffee.

“But I don’t know anyone here!” She was being so unreasonable. How did she expect me to go up to some random stranger and ask if they wanted to go for a two day hike???

“What about Jacob? He knows the area best out of anyone here.” She said thoughtfully.

“Jacob?” I whispered. Maybe that was a good idea. We could talk as long as we wanted and I could see if he really did like me or if he just wanted to get laid.

“Fine I’ll ask Jacob, but if he says no I’m still going.” I called over my shoulder as I walked out the door.

Jacob’s POV

I was still half asleep when I went to answer my door. Jennifer was standing on my porch with a back pack on her back. I motioned for her to come in and I went into the kitchen to get a cup of coffee.

“Why has God given me the right to see such a beautiful woman this early in the morning?” I asked using some of the older pack member’s tips. She rolled her eyes and I could see her facial expressions close down.

“Don’t bother trying to use any of that fancy stuff on me. I fell for it once, but never again. Maybe this was a bad idea. I’ll just tell my mom that I won’t stay out overnight.” She said as she started back towards the door.

“Wait. I’m sorry. Please just ask what you were going to.” I pleaded. So I screwed up big time this morning and put the pain back in her eyes. I vowed to myself that I would never be the cause of that ever again. I would do whatever it took for her to like me.

“I wanted to go on a two or three day hike and my mom said that I couldn’t go unless someone went with me and she suggested you.” She said calmly enough.

“I’d love that.” I said truthfully, a whole two days with just her. It was like heaven had decided I deserved a little bit of happiness.

“We leave in twenty minutes.” She said before walking back out the door and towards her house.

I spent 15 of the minutes thinking about her and the other 5 packing. She was so confusing sometimes. One minute she’d be happy and talking to me about nonsense and the next day she’d be closed off from all emotions. I realized that that must have been how I was after Bella.

Jennifer’s POV

Exactly twenty minutes later we were walking into the woods. “Any idea where we’re going?” He asked at one point early into the hike.

“Not a clue.” I replied. He just nodded. Maybe he understood this sort of soul searching hike. We mostly walked in silence for the first few hours. I was alternately thinking of what a bastard Josh was and what a bitch Bella is and then about the boy walking next to me. He was sweet and I think he honestly cared about me. Maybe imprinting was stronger than I thought. Quil had explained last night that it probably was.

We decided to stop for lunch when we reached a small clearing. It was simple. Just what we had brought with us and I could tell we were both still thinking about other things.

Suddenly there was a crash behind us and Jake stood up to go investigate. As soon as he walked into the woods a rather large mother bear walked out of the woods on the other side. She growled and glared at me if it was possible for a bear to glare. I figured that the mother’s cub was behind me and I was in her way.

“Uh Jake? We have a problem.” I screamed as she lunged.
