Edward’s POV

The doorbell rang and Carlisle answered the door.

“Carlisle, you look well. How have you been? Your way of life seems to suit you well,” Aro mused enthusiastically. The guard decided to go hunting, all except for Jane and a newborn who I recognized to be Gianna, the receptionist in Volterra. They must have chosen to keep her after all. Aro looked around and saw the rest of us.

“Ah, Edward, Bella, Alice, it is so wonderful to see you again; especially under better circumstances. I see that you have fulfilled your promise. I wonder, Bella, have you discovered whether or not you possess a gift?”

Bella looked at me and linked our minds.

You’re doing this with me.

I wouldn’t have it any other way love.

She took a deep breath and pulled Aro into her mind as well.

Hello, Aro. Yes, I have a gift. I can bring others into my mind and while linked we can all hear each others thoughts. Also, when someone is within the block, they have the same strange protection that I have all of the time.

Amazing, isn’t it? I’m very glad for Bella’s talent. Jane won’t be pleased, though, I imagine.

Probably not.

Bella returned her block to only herself and Aro laughed loudly.

“That was interesting. Yes, I enjoyed that little experience. It was almost as strange as when we first got a taste of Gianna’s little talent. I’m sorry if we frustrated you, Alice, but I couldn’t resist trying it out. She has the ability to hide the presence of herself and others. I imagine that you know how Jane felt when her gift would not work on Bella. Have you ever found anything like it?”

“Only once before; I was confounded by certain members of a Native American tribe near Forks, WA. It was very irritating."

“You see, Caius, I was right to let them leave. Things have turned out so well. There are so many bright and happy faces here.”

Aro looked around at the rest of the room, and a look of confusion broke over his features as his eyes fell on Charlie. He smiled enthusiastically and said, “Who might you be? I thought that I knew everyone in the Cullen clan.” His expression became pensive. After a minute or two, a smile broke over his face as he recognized who he was talking to.

“My name is Charlie Swan; I’m Bella’s father.”

“Well, I certainly am surprised. How did this happen?”

I went over to Aro and touched the back of his hand. His face was calm during the whole transaction and I let him see that I had made sure of what would happen before deciding to tell him; temper or no temper. When I lifted my hand, Aro seemed satisfied.

“Well, you knew how things would turn out; you broke no laws. Now what is this I caught about the other clan here in Alaska? I can hardly see how they would register when telling of Bella’s father.”

What does he have to do with them?

I heard what Aro said and thought, and I tried not to laugh. Unable to control myself, I chuckled and said, “Charlie and Tanya are very fond of each other.” Aro beamed understandingly.

There’s a new group of lovebirds now?

I nodded. He grinned like a Cheshire cat and looked at Carlisle.

“My friend, I’m sorry that our visit has been clouded by business tidings. I hope that you will visit Italy soon. Marcus would like to see you again, I am sure. I am sorry that we cannot stay any longer. It was nice to see you again. Farewell, my comrades. We shall have to get together again in the near future.”

With that they left. Charlie had a profound expression on his face.

“That was a creepy little visit, and trust me I’ve seen enough creepy to last two human lifetimes.”

Like finding out that my daughter was marrying into a family of vampires with pre-decided intentions of becoming one herself, Charlie thought jokingly. I laughed and agreed with him. I had to admit that Emmett was doing a good job of showing Charlie how to take a joke and occasionally make one.

“At least I know why my visions were screwing up. That is seriously annoying.”

Alice was frowning. A wave of calm flooded the room, and Jasper put his arms around Alice.

“Don’t let it bother you, my lovely, sweet, darling angel. I won’t allow anything to upset you like that; whether you like it or not. I love you too much to see you hurt.”

“I know, Jasper. I love you, too.”

I smiled at Bella and wrapped my arms around her.

It is sweet to see their love out in the open like that. It was hard to see before, but now it is very clear. I don’t know how I ever missed it.

As I said a long time ago; Alice and Jasper are two very rare creatures. I can understand how a human might not understand the connection. Their love is so deep that they hardly ever express it with words. They only remind each other during stressful times because neither of them really needs a reminder. Jasper can sense how Alice feels and show her how he feels; it’s very romantic.
