Edward’s POV

The weeks seemed to pass without much excitement. It had been nearly a month since the Volturi’s visit and things were finally getting interesting again. Alice could see that this trip to Tanya and her family’s house would be interesting but she refused to tell anyone and she was blocking me out.

“You know that I hate it when you do that.”

“Why else would I do it?”

Alice was sitting on Jasper’s lap and grinning at my annoyance. Bella walked over to me and sat down. She smiled at me and Alice’s thoughts vanished. Alice frowned.

“You know, Bella, it would be nice if you could side with me just this once. Annoying Edward is one of my favorite pastimes. It used to be fun, and now I get chastised every time I do it.”

She looked from me to Bella and shook her head. She was still blocking me out and her expression was playfully frustrated, but something was wrong with Jasper’s thoughts.

I don’t understand. She’s got that same feeling that she has when she’s planning something devious. What on earth is my little angel up to this time?

“What are you planning, Alice? I mean it, if you don’t tell me I’ll have Emmett hold Jasper down while I chase you up a tree.”

“Just try it. Bella wouldn’t let you, would you, Bella?”

“No, I wouldn’t. I like what Alice has planned, and if anyone but the two of us knew the plan wouldn’t work. Stay out of it, Edward. Besides, I have a better idea. Let’s go and visit Tanya.”

As soon as he heard Tanya’s name, Charlie flew into the room.

“I like Bella’s idea.”

“That sounds like an excellent idea,” Carlisle said. We loaded into the cars and drove the way to Denali. Charlie was thinking of Tanya as usual but this was different. His thoughts were nervous.

I love her. I love Tanya. Should I tell her? I don’t know how she would take it. What should I do? Edward, if you can hear me, will you please have Bella link us. I would like to talk to the both of you.

I asked Bella to link us.

Thank you, Bella. I need to talk to you and Edward about something. I recently realized something and I’m terrified. I love Tanya. I want to tell her but I’m scared of how she’ll react.

That’s great, dad. If you want her to know how you feel then just tell her.

That’s easier said than done, Bells.

It could be worse. You won’t have to fight not to kill her while telling her that you love her. One of the best and worst days of my life all rolled into one.

What do you mean?

The day of that stupid girl’s choice dance that I didn’t go to, I started my morning with a hiking trip to a beautiful meadow. Edward was showing me what he had meant when he said that he couldn’t be in the sunlight to where anyone could see. That day is definitely on the list of the best days of my life.

That day was very difficult for me, but I enjoyed that day very much. ‘And so the lion fell in love with the lamb’.

‘What a stupid lamb’

‘What a sick, masochistic lion’.

I have no idea what you two are talking about.

Sorry, we were just reliving the day. That’s exactly what we said. I think you should tell her, dad. I’m sure that she would want to know.

Thanks, Bells. I will tell her. But, how should I say it? Maybe I should ask Alice.

No cheating.

Believe it, or not, I didn’t ask Alice what Bella's reaction would be. She probably wouldn’t have told me even if I had asked, and I doubt that she would tell you, Charlie.

Bella let Charlie out of her mind and laid her head on my chest.

It’s weird to hear my dad worrying about telling the woman he loves how he feels about her. I know that they’ll be happy, though; which is very comforting!

What do you mean? How do you know that they will be happy? I didn’t think that Alice had seen anything else.

Alice was thinking about it outside of my block after she showed it to me and you were no more than 10 feet away from her; how could you not have heard it?

I don’t know.

Bella ended the connection as we pulled into the driveway. Tanya was sitting on the front porch with a pained expression on her face. Charlie was out of the car before it had even stopped. He pulled her into his arms and said, “What’s wrong, my angel?”

“I just had a fight with Irena. She is angry with me, and the others are staying out of it. They went hunting and Irena stormed off; I don’t know where she went.”

“Why is Irena angry with you?”

“It’s complicated. Edward, can you explain it? You know what the problem is.”

I nodded and looked at Charlie.

“Bella had very bad luck when it came to vampires during the last few months of her human years. We told you the truth behind Bella returning to Phoenix at the end of her junior year in high school; do you remember the small part about a vampire named Laurent? When James started hunting Bella, Carlisle convinced Laurent to come here. Well you know that Emmett and Jasper killed James, but we didn’t find out until later that James was the female, Victoria’s, mate. She was very angry so she asked Laurent to get the lay of the land around Forks. She wanted to kill Bella. In her mind, it was justified; mate for mate. Laurent and Irena had fallen in love with each other and when Laurent left he didn’t come back. He found Bella when she was hiking and at the time he had been hunting. The pack of Quileute werewolves, luckily, showed up in time to stop Laurent and they killed him. Irena is holding his death against Bella. She and Tanya were fighting because Tanya likes Bella and refuses to put up with Irena’s hatred.”

“It’s not just Bella that she hates. It’s all of you; everyone who protects her and cares about her. I could handle her hating me but not all of you; especially not you, Charlie.”

Charlie kept his arms around Tanya as he ushered her inside. We followed the two of them into the living room. He had Tanya on his lap, cradled up against his chest as he spoke to her.

“Everything will be fine. No matter what happens, I love you. I will always love you.”

They looked into each others’ eyes. Tanya pressed her lips gently to Charlie’s before laying her head on his chest again and whispering, “I love you, too, Charlie.” They sat like that for several minutes and nobody said a word. I smiled at my Bella and pulled her close. I knew exactly how Charlie was feeling at the moment. I had that feeling every time I looked at my beautiful, loving wife. Jasper was relieving the feelings he was gathering by flooding them back into the atmosphere. Before we knew it, each of the girls was in the laps of the one they loved. The moment continued for what seemed like forever and I never wanted it to end.
