Emmett, who was running in front of me, stopped suddenly, and I realized why. The trail led right into werewolf territory.

“NO!” I yelled. I knew it wouldn’t do any good; nothing could save my Bella if we weren’t allowed to cross. Sure we could follow them to Italy, but who said they wouldn’t kill her before they reached their destination? As if on cue to make things worse, the werewolves arrived.

“Carlisle,” Sam said warily as he stepped from behind a tree, the rest of the wolves followed. Jacob Black stood next to Sam, his eyes narrowed at me, sending resentful words in my direction through his thoughts. “What is going on? Why are you so close to the border? And why does it smell like some bloodsuckers crossed the line? It wasn’t you was it?”

“No,” Carlisle said slowly, I glared at him, willing him to speak faster, I had to save Bella. He began to rush through the words “You see, last year, Edward and Alice had to make a deal with the Volturi-" the wolves all shuddered at the name, had I not been so scared I might have smirked. “They had to promise that Bella would be changed into one of us to get her out of Volterra alive,” Jacob Black stiffened at that, his thoughts entered my mind. You did what! How could you do that to her? Make her a monster! I ignored him as Carlisle continued. “We did not expect them to check in so soon. We were up north in Canada, hunting, when Alice had a vision.”

“And that vision was?” Sam asked getting annoyed with the length of the story, he turned to Alice.

“The Volturi kidnapping Bella, they plan to kill her.” The wolves stood with their mouths hanging open.

“Why would they do that? What has she done to them?” Jacob Black’s entire frame was shaking, yet he somehow he still managed to speak.

“She is a human who knows too much, they see her as a liability. She is someone who could compromise our secrecy.” Carlisle answered coolly.

“You have yet to answer my question, why are you so close to the border?” Sam was definitely annoyed with us now.

“Because,” It pained me to admit this but I had to, “we didn’t get back in time.”

“WHAT!” Jacob Black looked like he was having a seizure. His shape was a blur, but then he calmed himself down.

“We didn’t make it back in time. They already have her, we were following their trail, but it runs into your territory. Every second we stand here arguing, the greater the chance of Bella’s death. We would like permission to cross over into your territory just this once Sam. Please. We have to continue following the trail if we want to save Bella.”

Sam deliberated for what seemed like forever, I was anxious for his decision. What if he said no? What if we were not allowed to pass? “Fine, but just this once because Bella’s life is at stake, however we will run with you.”

As soon as the words were out of his mouth we were running. I felt the wolves transform, and then they were running along side of us. We reached a road and the trail stopped.

“NO! NO! NO! NO!” I yelled. Jasper tried to calm me down, but even with his hand on my shoulder nothing worked. My Bella was gone; I would most likely never see her again. I heard Alice gasp beside me, but I didn’t stay to find out what she saw, I didn’t want to see Bella die. I ran back to the house and into my room. She was gone. I was sure of that now. How could I have been so stupid as to believe that she would be okay for just one weekend without any of us here to protect her? It was my entire fault that Bella was going to die.
