(Bella’s POV)

The first thing I noticed as I regained consciousness was that I wasn’t alone. Two female voices prattled on next to me about some sale in some shop, and a male voice, low and deep, spoke next to me.

“Bella? Bella are you awake?” I recognized it as Eleazer.

And the memories overtook me. Driving to Alaska, meeting Eleazer, the feel of joy as I realized I was going to be a vampire, and then the pain. Oh, the thrashing, burning, pain of venom pulsing slowly through my veins. I winced at the memory.

I sat up quickly--too quickly, and took in my surroundings. I was in a small-ish room with Eleazer, Tanya, and Kate, laying across a couch. My back ached and my chest felt heavy, but I felt great.

I sprang up in a blindingly fast movement, and stretched out my hand. It was an extreme pale color, smooth as ice and thicker--more muscled.

I was a vampire.

“Bella!” Eleazer said, and took my hand, kissing it politely.

“Eleazer…I need to find Edward.” My fascination was quick replaced with a blazing determination to get out of here--to find Edward and show him.

“Um, okay. Well, first, I’d teach you to feed, and you can’t go around humans until you can control yourself…if you wouldn’t mind staying with us for a bit you’d be gladly welcome here…” Eleazer said. I thought a minute--better to stay here and learn to cope with my new immortality then to go running blindly into trouble. I’d give it a month, maybe two--and then I could go find Edward…

******

(6 weeks later)

Driving in a sleek, fast Audi, I sped down the highway at 150 mph. Speed was one of the things I was accustomed to now--and I remembered my human days with much distain. It was so much more fun faster.

I was going to Astoria High. Astoria, Oregon.

The past month had been filled with hunting trips, strength tests, and lots of fun times. I loved the new speed, strength and senses that accompanied immortality, but traveling amongst humans was a huge struggle. Each smelled so delicious, so…yummy. They were edible.

But I had learned to control myself--and with brown-tinged contacts and a whole new wardrobe I was ready to hit the streets of Astoria.

Ok, that phrase would go much better with a city like Manhattan or Boston--but all the same…

******

I parked in front of an ivy-covered brick building with the letters “Administration” spelled across the door. It was raining outside--the clouds a dull gray--the color of my mood.

What if Edward really didn’t love me this time? I had figured, after all his words, that he had only left for my mortality. But what if that wasn’t the case?

I stepped into the warm building and flashed a smile at the woman at the front desk. She did a double-take as she saw me, blinking a couple times.

I smiled. Also accompanying immortality was that perfect beauty--and I had come to have that effect on most people. After all, with perfect shoulder length hair and perfectly straight white teeth--you definitely get attention.

“Hello, my name is Isabella Swan…I’m new here?” I said, and scowled at the wavered tone of my voice. I didn’t need to sound so unsure of myself.

“Oh, yes…Isabella.” The woman said, flustered. She fished around on her cluttered desk until she found a slip of paper covered in print. “That’s your schedule and a map. And this,” she said, handing me another sheet, “is a slip you need to get signed by all your teachers. Just bring it back by the end of the day.”

I waved a slight goodbye and stepped back out into the rain. This was going to be a long day.

Cars were beginning to fill the parking lot and kids were beginning to accumulate near the doors and on the benches. I went unnoticed only as far as the first building, when the first guy spotted me. He looked at me, his eyes sparkling, and then punched his friend in the arm and whispered in his ear. I kept walking, embarrassed.

Soon after that everyone started looking at me, guys getting a lovestruck look in their eyes and girls furrowing their brow--comparing themselves to me. Only one guy mustered up the courage to talk to me.

“Hey--you must be the new girl. I’m Jake.” He said, extending his hand to shake. His name brought back memories of Jacob--and I felt a pang of remorse.

I took Jake’s hand and shook it. “I’m Bella.”

“Hey Bella…” He said, but the bell rang, interrupting us. “What’s your next class?”

I looked down at my schedule. “World History.”

“Oh--I have Geometry, the next building over. I could walk you there?” He said. I nodded hesitantly, hoping this wouldn’t turn into another Mike fiasco. Casting one last glance into the parking lot, I saw what I was looking for.

A silver Volvo.

My heart leaped a beat. They were really here!

I followed Jake through a mass of buildings, a skip in my step that hadn’t been there before. Jake led me to a brown doorway, and then turned towards me.

“So, I’ll…see you round?” He asked.

“Sure.” I said, pushing open the door and giving a little wave.

I stepped into a dimly lit classroom filled with the dull roar of chatter. Upon my enterance, it began to diminish, until it was barely a whisper. Guys stared at me, their mouths open, and girls scowled. I smiled involuntarily. The reaction was something I never got as a human…

“And you must be Isabella?” Said a man at the front of the room. I turned to him, grateful to turn away from the stares. This must be the teacher.

He was a balding man--mid forties, by the looks of it. He had glasses perched on top of his disproportionate nose, and his mouth was twisted into a permanent frown.

All in all, not too friendly-looking.

“Yes sir.” I said, making an effort to keep my voice steady. “And you must be…”I glanced hurriedly at my sheet. “Mr. Armstrong?”

He nodded, casting a curious eye down my frame. His gaze lingered a bit too long at my chest, and I crossed my arms sheepishly. Pervert.

He pointed to a seat in the back of the room, and I hurriedly sat down. It was much easier to avoid stares at the back of the room.

*****

Ok. I lied--they managed to stare at me anyways. All four classes had been nothing but attempting to shake off the pesky boys that continued to tell me I was hot, ask me to go out to eat, and one obsessive stalker-like boy who asked me to marry him…

Ughh…high school. I checked my schedule--lunch.

Oh crap. Oh crap, oh crap, oh crap. This would be it. This would be the time where Edward finally saw me. My stomach clenched with nerves and I resisted the urge to puke. I can do this, I can do this. I told myself. What’s the worst he can do--ignore me? I can deal with that. I would make him love me again…

I stepped bravely into the door marked “Cafeteia” (the “r” had been scratched off), and cast my eyes around the room.

I froze.

There he was, no more then a 10 yards away, seated at a table with the rest of his family. He had the same gorgeous bronze hair, same golden eyes, same lanky frame--but somehow he was different. He looked emptier, as if he was missing something. He picked nonchalantly at his barely full plate--his long white fingers dissecting a bread roll. My dead heart leapt a beat at the sight of him, and I involuntarily gasped.

Alice was the first to look up.

Wordlessly, she leapt up and broke into a sprint, launching at me and barreling me back into the wall. “BELLA!!!” She nearly shrieked. I smiled--at least Alice was happy to see me.

Soon to follow, were Emmett and Jasper, and they both enveloped me in a hug from either side. It was a Bella sandwich. “Bella! You’re here! And your…immortal!” Jasper said.

“Hell yes she is…wait till Ed sees her..” Emmett said, winking at Jasper. What?

Even Rosalie gave me a hug, a look of sheer relief pasted across her face. “Finally…” She said rather irritably.

Finally, finally, Edward looked up, and I stopped breathing. His face lit up in recognition, and he broke into a huge smile. Ignoring the boundaries of human speed, he sprinted toward me, lifting me into his arms and spinning me around.

“Bella…” He breathed, and I sighed. This was so much better then hallucinations…

“Edward.” I said, lavishing this bliss. I breathed deeply, letting my chest rise and fall--finally whole again.

I was home.
