I watched out the car window as we sped away. We weren’t even there for a year, I sighed. Edward glanced over at me and took my hand. He gave it a reassuring squeeze. I went back to looking out the window.
One week later
Mr. Banet’s POV
I kept my eyes continuously posted on the internet, entering Cullen into Public School Student Search multiple times in a day. I wasn’t sure where this…obsession, was coming from. But I couldn’t help myself, all these events just added up too strangely to be coincidences. I rubbed my temples and entered their surname again.
Alice Cullen – Spienal High School
Edward Cullen – Spienal High School
Emmett Cullen – Spienal High School
Bella Hale – Spienal High School
Jasper Hale – Spienal High School
Rosalie Hale – Spienal High School
Finally! Now what? I knew what I wanted to do… I was itching to go find them. But was that the wisest decision? I jumped up and grabbed a small duffel, and shoved a few days worth of clothes into it, along with my toiletries. I grabbed my coat off the hook and sprinted out the door, not even bothering to lock it. I was too excited and pumped with adrenaline. I unlocked my car, shoved my duffel in the passenger seat and started the small Honda.
I’ll be back in a day or two; I don’t even need to let the secretary know. They can just assume I’m sick.
Spienal High School was menial. They had the bare necessities and no more. This was by far the worse public school I had seen. All the way in the middle of no where.
“All right kids, you better get going! Oh don’t be so glum! We’ll be out of here in a month. Maybe the next place you guys can get jobs.” Esme said cheerfully, waving as we ran out the door.
“No cars!” we heard Carlisle say from inside. We were laying low for a while. Just in case.
“I heard that!” Carlisle shouted to Rosalie.
“Okay okay, let’s just go please. The sooner the month is over the better.” Rosalie grumbled as she buttoned up her Ralph Lauren polo.
“Humans are such bothersome creatures” Jasper muttered.
Bella spun around. “What did you say?!” her voice deathly quiet.
Everyone instantly fell silent.
“Bella, you know that’s not what I mean. I’m just saying—”
“Well don’t. It’s not his fault that he’s actually smart enough to realize something is amiss” She snapped.
Jasper looked guilty.
She briskly walked off. I shrugged and went after her.
“Go ahead. We’ll be there before the bell rings” I said
I caught up to Bella.
“Bella dear, what was that all about? You know Jasper didn’t mean it.” I said soothingly.
“I know, it just made me mad. I don’t even know why. I guess being human… I don’t know. I guess I should go apologize. I didn’t mean to ornery” She said apologetically.
I chuckled. Bella oh Bella. Always so lost and confused.
Mr. Banet’s POV
I parked my car at the far end of the small parking lot, letting a large truck cover my car. I turned off the engine and sat, watching high schoolers amble along, waiting until the last minute possible to enter school. I rolled my eyes. Suddenly, I saw Edward and Bella emerge from the edge of the forest, and walk towards the school. I jumped happily, inside my head. I had found the right place. Now, I just had to find a way to confront them. Edward and Bella looked too absorbed in each other to notice me.
The day wore on, and I still hadn’t the slightest clue how to confront them. The bell rang and I jumped as students ran out of school. I didn’t see the Cullens, but I sank lower in my seat just in case. A couple minutes later the parking lot was empty and all the students had left. I sighed, frustrated that I couldn’t create a solution.
Being old really sucks.
Suddenly the car door opened. I jumped, this time physically, and almost yelled in fright. A kid got into the car. I realized it was one of the Cullens. Jasper, if I recall correctly. I grasped my car keys and stuck them in the ignition quickly.
“Don’t be afraid” he said in an eerie voice.
“I—I’m not af—fraid” I said, knowing that the trembling in my voice contradicted my very words.
He smiled; his pearly white teeth seemed threatening.
“So you are the Mr. Banet that is making all the trouble for us. What a shame” he seemed to be musing, talking to himself almost.
He then stared at me.
I quickly looked away.
“Now now, as I said, don’t be afraid. It won’t hurt.” He said in a relaxing sweet voice.
Hurt? What won’t hurt?
“I want you to start your car and we’re going to take a little drive. And please don’t try to run away. You can’t” He said, his tone sharp.
I pulled out of the parking lot.
“Where do you want to—t—to go?” I said. I gripped the steering wheel tightly with my hands.
“I’ll tell you where to turn” he said sharply.
Many twists and turns later we arrived in a desolate looking area with a field ahead of us.
“Now get out of the car, once again do not attempt to run away” His eyes pierced me.
I needed to run. Escape.
Some instinct was telling me to leave as fast as possible.
I opened the car door slowly, my heart pounding. I placed one foot on the ground, and then used a burst of speed to begin to run away.
Not even a second later, Jasper appeared in front of me.
“Now, what did I say about running away? It’s futile Mr. Banet.” He talked to me like he was scolding a child.
How did he get here so quickly? It was too unnatural.
“I really am sorry. If there was any other way, if only you were not so curious… But secrets are supposed to be kept. I really don’t want to do. I promised there would be no feasting. But they don’t know I’m doing this to protect them. Besides, I won’t really but hunting. I will not give into temptation. It’ll be quick and without any smell. Not even a trace of blood. They’ll never know.” He seemed to be musing again.
Without any smell?
Jasper circled me.
“I am truly sorry” he whispered.
And then, there was nothing.
