I was sitting on the couch, in the living room, wearing a t-shirt of Edward's and some of Alice's shorts. What was going on? Why wasn't anyone telling me anything?
"Bella," Alice walked in and came to sit by me, "How you doing?"
"How do you think I'm doing?" I asked, incredulously, "Edward is possessed by Jacob; we don't how to reverse it or if it can even be reversed or what it will do to him."
"I'm sorry, Bella. Carlisle's doing everything he can. We all are."
"No, we aren't."
"If this happened to Jasper, what would you do?"
She considered that before saying, "I don't know. I honestly don't."
"But, you wouldn't sit on your butt and do absolutely nothing, would you?"
"Bella, don't even go there." Alice warned.
"I'm sick of this, Alice. I'm tired of waiting on the sidelines to see what may or may not happen. I'm tired of being so helpless and powerless all the time. I can't just sit here and let this happen to Edward. Do not ask me to do that."
"It's out of the question." She said, firmly, "Edward would--"
"I don't give a damn about what Edward wants right now, Alice. I am not going to just let this happen and do nothing."
"What do you plan to do about it?" She asked, "Bella, there is literally nothing you can do."
"I will do anything. Even if I have to go beat the crap out of Jacob, myself; I'll find a way. I'm not letting this happen to Edward."
"What good will that do? Bella, you're gonna get yourself seriously hurt."
"So what! At least Edward will be safe."
"He won't be safe if anything happens to you."
"You know what; I'll feel better, knowing that I saved him."
"Do you really think you will save him if you wind up hurt as a result?"
I simply stared at her and practically yelled, "I DON'T CARE!"
Suddenly, calming waves surged through me and I felt Jasper's hand on my shoulder. I tried to fight it, not wanting to be calm right now, but once his effects reached me and I lost myself in that serene and peaceful feeling, there was no turning back.
I closed my eyes and let it consume me for a moment, before opening my eyes and seeing Alice looking at Jasper appreciatively.
"Thank you," I said, softly, and he smiled, slightly. "I'm sorry, Alice."
"No, it's okay. I had forgotten what it's like to be so helpless and powerless. We have our strength as our strongest ally, whereas you only have your love for Edward. You are running on human strength. It amazes me that you have gotten this far with that."
Emmett and Rosalie walked in and I jumped to my feet, "How is he?" I was hoping for some good news, but their expressions betrayed me.
Rosalie looked nervously to Emmett, who stiffened up and said, "Carlisle doesn't know what to do. In all his years, he said he's never seen anything like this. He's tried every remedy, everything he knows, but nothing has worked. He doesn't even know how their power of possession works, yet alone how to reverse it. Edward's still unconscious."
"No," I whispered, before collapsing weakly onto the couch.
Alice pulled my head into her lap and began playing with my hair. "I'm so sorry, Bella."
Tears streamed down my face and I was stifling useless sobs.
Emmett came over, knelt down, and said, "He's going to be okay, Bella. He has too much to live for."
I sat up and said, "Something is still bothering me. I'm going to ask you something and I want an honest answer."
He nodded, "Of course."
I told them about what Edward had said about the bet between him and Emmett about me and Rosalie, hoping it was just Jacob being a jerk and not true.
Emmett snorted, "Hah! Yeah right. Edward doesn't make bets; he finds it childish. Besides, you'd have to be an idiot to make a bet saying anyone looks better than Rosalie."
Alice smacked him and Rosalie glared angrily at him. Jasper snorted, and said, reproachingly, "Emmett!"
I flinched, as if I had been slapped in the face, and smirked at the truth of those words.
He stared sheepishly off into space and then said, "Okay, that sounded so much better in my head."
"Really?!" Alice said, angrily.
Emmett shrugged, "I'm sorry! That was rude; I'm sorry. I shouldn't have said that."
"You think?!" Alice said, irritably, "What the hell was that?"
"No, it's okay," I said, "It's true. You don't have to be a genius to know that Rosalie is so much more beautiful than I could ever dream of being."
"No, that is not true." Rosalie said, firmly, "That is absolutely not true."
"Isn't it?" I said, doubtfully, "Think about it. Edward never would've fallen in love with me if it wasn't for the fact that my blood was so enticing to him and he couldn't read my mind. That was what drew him to me. If it wasn't for that--" I trailed off, not wanting to finish that sentence. "If I wasn't able to block him out, he--"
"That's it!" Emmett said, jumping to his feet.
"What?" I asked, confused.
"That's it! Come with me, Bella, I have an idea."
Before I could respond, he pulled me to my feet by my hand and pulled me along to Edward's room.
"Wait here, Bella. I'll be right back."
"Shh, there's no time to explain. Just wait."
He walked into the room and shut the door behind him. I couldn't hear anything; they spoke too low.
After a minute or so, the door opened and he and Carlisle both came out, looking pleased. Emmett looked a bit cocky, in a hilarious way.
"I think it could work, Emmett. Go tell the others and I'll tell Bella."
He nodded and obliged and Carlisle turned to me.
"Bella, you know how you can block out Edward's ability to read your mind?"
I nodded, still not understanding.
He continued on, "There's a chance that it could be your powers showing themselves now as a human. If you could access those powers as a human to block Edward out unconsciously, perhaps you could access them consciously to block Jacob out of Edward's mind."
I shook my head, "What? I don't--I don't know what I would do. This isn't something I do consciously. I don't know what causes it. It isn't something I can just control like that."
"Control has nothing to do with it. You have something stronger than control on your side; you have yours and Edward's love for one another. That love is stronger than any other power or barrier that may threaten to destroy you. I assure you, Bella; you can do this."
"Will you help me?" I asked, desperately.
"No. I can't. This is something you have to do on your own. If you can get through to Edward, he can help you, but that's it. None of us can help you."
I sighed, shakily, afraid that his one chance of coming back depended entirely on me.
"I'll be right out here. If anything goes wrong, I'll be right there. Don't worry, Bella. You can do this. I know you can. Channel all of your energy, all of your love for Edward, all of your hope into tapping into your gift and it will happen. You are too strong for it to fail."
I nodded and he opened the door, moved aside to let me in, and shut the door behind me.
I saw Edward, still lying unconscious on his bed, and slowly made my way to him, struggling to stifle my sobs and tears. He looked so peaceful, as if he truly was sleeping.
I sat down beside him and took his left hand in mine and brought it to my chest, placing it over my heart, and interlacing our fingers. I placed my other hand on his face, caressing his cheek.
I lowered my lips to his and kissed him softly. "Edward?" I whispered, against his lips, "Edward, can you hear me? Please, come back to me. I need you. Edward, I love you; please don't leave me."
I sobbed at the lack of progress and kissed him again. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry; this is all my fault. Edward, please."
I rested my forehead against his lips and hung my head, in shame. I noticed our rings beside each other and sat up, realization of what I must do hitting me.
"Of course!" With trembling hands, I removed his wedding band, placed it on one of my fingers, clutched his hand desperately with both of mine, and sobbed. I knew what I had to do.
I simply thought of our life without Jacob. Jacob was out of Edward's head, he was out of our lives, he was incapable of breaking through the barriers and strength of our union.
Jacob Black was strong; but, Edward Cullen and Isabella Swan--together as one--were indestructible. It was impossible for our relationship to be penetrated. No one or nothing was powerful enough or strong enough to destroy us. Nothing had that kind of power.
I wrapped Edward's arms around my waist, wrapped mine around his, and said, desperately, yet firmly, "Edward Cullen, I love you. I cannot live without you. Please...you have to come back to me. Fight it! Fight Jacob. You can do this. Isabellla Swan loves Edward Cullen. I need you."
I bent down and began humming my lullaby into his ear, with great difficulty, through my hysterical sobs and tears.
He jumped up and gasped, "Bella!" He searched desperately for me and I smiled, "Edward, it's me; I'm here. Are you with me?"
"Bella, it's me; it's Edward. I'm sorry. I am so sorry." He tightened his arms around my waist and rested his forehead against mine. "You did it. You saved me." He said, with a smile.
I laughed and kissed him as deeply as I could, struggling to do so, still hysterical and delirious.
When we pulled away, he brought one hand up, cupped my face in it, tilted my head up to look at him, and said, his eyes locked on mine, "I love you...so much."
"I love you," I replied, kissing him again, "Thank you for returning to me. I don't know what I would've done..." I trailed off, not finishing that sentence.
I pulled back slightly, removed his ring from my finger, put it back on his, and kissed it. He watched me as I did this with such great intensity and love that the tears streaming down my face were from the joy of knowing that I had won....I had my beautiful Edward Cullen back and he would truly never leave me again.
