I never stopped running. I kept running until I saw the silver volvo that I longed to see. I was delirious with pain, though--physical and emotional--so I could have been imagining things. My head was spinning with heat exhaustion, betrayal, and most importantly, anger.

Suddenly, Edward's arms were circling around my waist and pulling me closer. "Bella, what the hell are you doing running from La Push?"

"Edward--" I gasped, "No--the treaty--the--the line--"

"Is a mile back, Bella. I'm not breaking any rules. What happened?"

I was struggling to catch my breath as my legs began shaking uncontrollably beneath me. "I--Edward--the sun--you--"

"It doesn't matter, Bella. Come on. Let's get you home."

I clung desperately to him and sobbed, "No! Edward--hold me."

"Bella--" he sounded scared. "Come here." He effortlessly scooped me up and climbed into the backseat of the volvo, still cradling me in his arms. "Drive, Alice," Edward ordered from the backseat. Immediately, the car began moving and I closed my eyes. "Bella?" Edward was caressing my face with his fingertips, staring intensely at me, trying to figure out what happened.

I was trembling in his arms and I tightened my hold on him, desperate to be closer than I already was.

While one hand continued caressing my face, his other hand ran down my arm, lightly stroking it. Once he reached my wrist, I cringed and screamed, my voice cracking in between the scream. Edward started and look down at my wrist. "Bella, what the HELL happened to wrists?"

My wrist began trembling involuntarily in pain as he traced his cool fingertips around the area that was in agonizing pain. I clenched my teeth to keep from screaming again and buried my face helplessly in his chest.

"Alice?!" Edward sounded angry now.

Alice's voice stammered, "I don't--I don't know. I only saw her running; I didn't see her get hurt. It must have--been--I don't know, Edward."

"That's not good enough, Alice!" He raised his voice, "What the hell good are your premonitions if they can't even help Bella?

"Edward!" Alice sounded hurt.

"Edward, don't--" I mumbled against his chest, "It's not--her fault." My voice was so muffled by his chest, I was surprised he made sense of my words.

There was a moment of silence before Edward sighed and said, half-forced, half-truly apologetic, "Sorry, Alice. I just--I can't stand it when Bella gets hurt."

"And you think I can?!" Alice sounded defensive, but then changed her tone to sincere as she continued on, "I love her too, Edward. It hurts me to see her in pain just as much as it hurts you. She is my sister. It kills me when my damn power doesn't work when it is needed to help her."

"I know you love her, Alice. Thank you for that. And thank you for giving it all you have." Edward said, but his voice was strained; he was obviously struggling to not break down and yell again.

Another moment of silence passed before Alice said, "Where are we going?"

"To see Carlisle. He needs to look at Bella." Edward said, immediately. He reached down and brushed the dirt off my face and caressed my jawbone with the back of his hand.

I was struggling to stay awake, afraid that I would have nightmares about Jake, but Edward began humming my lullaby softly in my ear after kissing it and I surrendered; obligated to succumb to his will now. My eyes fluttered shut and I pulled myself closer to him. He tightened his arms around me and kissed my head. He whispered my name into my hair and then I fell into total unconsciousness. Being in Edward's arms kept the nightmares away, as could be expected.

When I woke up, I felt a wave of calm surge through me and I knew Jasper was nearby. I looked up to see Carlisle examining one of my wrists, kneeling by Edward's bed, which I had been laid on.

Edward was sitting on the edge of the bed, holding the other one of my hands in both of his, caressing the back of my hand with his thumb, as he glared at the wound Carlisle was examining. His breathing was forced; ragged. He was clearly struggling to remain patient.

Jasper was standing at the foot of the bed, staring at me, a look of worry on his face, but the waves of calm still kept radiating out him and I was feeling calmer than I have ever felt in my life.

Alice was kneeling by my side, brushing her fingers through my tangled hair, fear clear through her facade, even with Jasper's emotional Aspirin taking place.

Emmett was standing behind Carlisle, watching intently as Carlisle cleaned my wounds and concentrated on the task at hand.

"Edward?" I croaked. Edward's focus broke and he looked at me. He smiled weakly, "Oh, Bella...thank God!"

One of his arms snaked around my waist and the other rested on my shoulder. He bent down and kissed me lightly on the lips. "Are you okay?" He asked, against my lips, before kissing me again, this time deeper.

"Mm-hm..." I mumbled as he pulled away. I pulled my free hand back and placed it on his cheek, stroking his cheekbone with my thumb.

He took his hand that was on my shoulder, put it over my hand, moved it to his lips, kissed the palm of my hand, and then moved it back. "Are you hurting?"

I shook my head and forced a smile. I wasn't hurting physically so much anymore--now, it was emotional pain, which Jasper was rapidly getting rid of. I wished, at this moment, that I could borrow him for everyday until I became a vampire and wasn't so weak and easily affected by my damn human emotions and concerns.

"She has multiple abrasions, bruises, and scrapes." Carlisle informed us, continuting to examine me, lightly tapping my wrist now.

I cringed and moaned in pain. Edward and Carlisle both shuddered in sympathy. "What is it?!" Edward asked urgently, looking towards Carlisle now.

Carlisle grimaced, "She has some ruptured blood vessels."

Edward sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose with his thumb and index finger, angrily. He closed his eyes and said, "Bella, what happened?"

I exhaled shakily and choked out, "Jacob...I don't--He tried to dissuade me from joining you--AGAIN--" I grimaced, "And--when I refused to leave you guys, he saw it fit to throw the keys to my truck into the FOREST and to drag me--literally--into his house to hold me HOSTAGE, knowing he would stop us because you guys wouldn't break the treaty or war would break out and all hell would break loose...so I had to run back from La Push and you had to come save my butt again. Thank GOD he didn't follow me." I said this all in one breath, and then gasped desperately for breath as I waited for their reactions.

Emmett's jaw tightened and he clenched his fists and yelled, "THAT LITTLE FU--"

"Emmett, do NOT finish that sentence!" Carlisle reprimanded, raising his voice for the first time since I had known him.

Emmett opened his mouth to retort, but closed it again once Alice glared at him. "Oh, Bella..." Alice said, sympathetically, shaking her head in disbelief.

The waves of calm were quickly being withdrawn and I knew it was because the anger was overtaking Jasper, though he didn't show it.

Edward's breathing was deepening and becoming louder and rage, as he glared into space. I stiffened; knowing his reaction would be the worst. He stood up and turned around to avoid his anger increasing. I tried to reach for him, but Carlisle grabbed my hand gently, to restrain me, and smiled slightly before shaking his head.

"Edward--" Carlisle began, but Edward cut him off, through clenched teeth, "DON'T talk to me!" He disappeared in a blur and I pouted, wanting desperately for him to come back.

Alice closed her eyes and sighed, loudly, "Uh-oh...we won't be seeing him for a couple of hours."

From the forest, a loud crashing sound erupted, followed by another, and a yell of rage and anger from Edward. I cringed and covered my ears with my hands, squeezing my eyes shut tightly.

Emmett started and snorted, "Maybe days. Come on, Jasper, we can do it without him!" He began stomping towards the door when Jasper furrowed his eyebrows and said, "Do...what?"

"Kick the crap out of Jacob's pathetic ass!" Emmett said, in an obvious tone.

"No, Emmett." Carlisle said, firmly.

Emmett began bouncing up and down impatiently and he whined, "Come on; let me have this! He hurt Bella!"

"No." Carlisle repeated.

Emmett stammered, "But, I--he--she--what--ARGH! But, they are being completely unreasonable! That means we kick ass and I live happily ever after."

Carlisle stood too, "Violence will solve nothing. We just need to rediscuss our negotiations with the werewolves and try to keep this civilized."

"I agree with Emmett." I said, eagerly, "You have my blessing. You can kill the bastards for all I care."

Emmett's face lit up and he said, happily, "Hah! Bella gave me the green light; I win, you lose." He made to leave, but Carlisle stopped him.

"Emmett, there will be no fighting. End of discussion."

"DAMN IT!" Emmett stomped out of the room, angrily, and Carlisle sighed, impatiently, before turning around and smiling at me, "I'm so sorry, Bella. I promise you; Sam will be hearing of this. I won't let this go unpunished."

I nodded, disappointed that Emmett's plan wouldn't be carried out. He smiled warmly, "Stay as long as you like. When you want to go home, let us know. Alice will drive you if Edward isn't back yet."

I couldn't help but smile at that. "Thank you, Carlisle." He nodded and left the room.

Jasper smiled, apologetically, "Feel better, Bella. I better go."

I smiled, "Thanks for everything, Jasper."

He nodded, knowing what I meant, "Anytime. Take care." He looked at Alice, and though he didn't actually SAY the words, his eyes clearly said: "I love you" and hers responded just as clearly. Then, he left as well.

Alice sighed and sat on the bed beside me. So...what do you want to do?"

I chuckled, "I want to watch Emmett kick Jacob's butt, but Carlisle is adamant that that's not gonna happen."

Alice laughed too, "I agree. But, even Emmett knows not to argue with Carlisle once his mind is made up. He is all about mediation."

"I don't want 'mediation'; I want ass-kicking." I said, irritably.

"Well, that's not going to happen, Bella. So, what's next on your list?"

"I want Edward here. I really need him right now."

Alice rolled her eyes, "Oh, good grief, Bella! You are the most impossible person to please. Why can't you want something that is in my control?"

I smiled, "I suppose some quality time with my future sister-in-law will suffice."

Her face lit up. "YES!" She squealed, "I have an idea! Follow me!" She took my good hand, helped me off the bed, and then ran us out of the room so fast, I could have sworn we were floating.
