After a couple of minutes, Edward said, "Bella," in a reprimanding tone. "Edward, please, don't; not now."

He merely looked over at me, staring at me for the remainder of the drive. Most of the time, this bothered me, but right now, I couldn't care less. I was too upset with myself for the mess I had made of things. When would I learn that I cannot have Jacob and just accept it and let him go? I refuse to let him ruin my life and the lives of everyone I love. If he had a problem, it was between me and him.

I must have said this out loud and not realized it, because Edward said, "It's not just your problem anymore, Bella. Carlisle talked to Sam."

I turned to look at Edward, "And?"

"And...it's war. Sam was actually behind the whole hostage situation. Jacob was merely running on orders."

"So, that's why he didn't follow me." I said, understanding now.

Edward nodded, "Sam wouldn't let him. But, Sam said we need to rediscuss the negotiations or war will be unavoidable."

"What's to rediscuss?" I asked, irritably.

"You. He said they will not stop fighting to stop us from getting married and to stop me from changing you. If we follow through with it, it's war."

I exhaled shakily and asked, "What are we going to do?"

"You won't do anything, except walk down that aisle, say 'I do', and then almost immediately after, I'll have to change you. Otherwise, they'll stop us."

I couldn't breathe: how could this be happening? Why was everyone so bent on keeping me from being happy? "What will you do?" I asked, secretly saying 'we' in my mind, knowing he couldn't hear it.

"Carlisle wants to remain passive, but Sam already said that they refuse to stop fighting for you. Carlisle's afraid that if we don't settle it in a peaceful manner, the Volturi will handle it a very unpeaceful manner. He wants to avoid that at all costs. If the Volturi interferes and you are still human, we'll all die. They have given us too much time and we took it for granted." He sounded angry with himself.

I sighed and took his hand. I brought it up to my lips, kissed the icy palm, placed it on my cheek, entwined my fingers with his own, while holding it in place. "I don't think we can remain passive anymore." I whispered, mostly to myself.

"I agree." Edward said, "As does Emmett: he's writing out attack strategies as we speak and Rosalie's trying to reason with him. But, he only listens to Carlisle in situations like this."

That thought scared me: "Edward, I don't want anyone to get hurt over this. Isn't there any way we can just go away for the time being and return when it's too late for them to fight?"

He smirked, "It wouldn't work. According to the treaty, we can't do it anywhere and avoid war; they'll come after us; you know that. And then, we could be in the middle of a war while you're changing--I couldn't do that to you. When you are being put through that excruciating, agonizing hell, I want to be there for you. Not fending off a bunch of out-of-control werewolves who refuse to accept your decision."

"Edward, please. You can't do this; not for me." I begged, through tears of both anger and pain.

"Shh...we will play defense. No one will be hurt by our hand. I promise. If an actual battle breaks out, we will merely defend ourselves, we won't hurt any of them." He promised, caressing my face with the tips of his fingers.

"Edward, I'm scared!" I said, my voice cracking at the end. "Don't let this happen."

He shook his head, "There's no choice now." He looked down at me and sighed, in sympathy. "Come here." He whispered.

I obliged and snuggled in closer, resting my head on his chest and wrapping my arms around his waist, while one of his wrapped around my shoulder and the other one remained on the steering wheel. "I think we should move up the wedding." I said, softly, tightening my arms around him, "It'll be the best way to avoid war, I think."

He kissed my head and said, "Okay. I'll talk to Carlisle and Alice and see what we can do. For now, go to sleep, Bella."

I didn't want to sleep, but I had been through so much, and once Edward began humming my lullaby I could no longer fight it off, and I fell into unconsciousness, but not before I heard Edward's voice whisper, "I love you...my beautiful Bella."
