Edward thought he was a monster. That being a vampire made him a monster. That being dangerous to humans (to me) made him a monster.

But that only made him dangerous.

It takes much more to be a monster. Monsters are the people who storm a classroom, with guns blazing. Monsters are the people who kill randomly and without purpose – who shoot those who stand in the way to protect others. Monsters are the people who kill a man who gives up his own life, so others can escape the monster. Monsters are the people who can’t handle their own emotions. Monsters are the people who snap and take revenge on the undeserving.

Monsters come in all shapes and sizes. They are men who are willing to die for a cause – who are willing to take their own life, if it means taking the lives of others – the lives of innocent people. People waiting for a bus, shopping at a market, flying home to visit their loved ones.

Monsters are the people who kill someone’s son because he is defending his country. Monsters strap his body with explosives – booby trap it to kill the people looking for his body to send home to his mother in a coffin draped in a flag.

Monsters are the people who fire guns in the hours after a hurricane; who pillage and loot and rape and murder in a city’s darkest hour.

Monsters are the people who fly crowded airplanes into the biggest buildings.

Monsters are the people who storm a small schoolhouse to rape and murder young girls.

Monsters are the people who shoot and kill 32 people at a university.

Monsters are the cowards who kill – and then kill themselves so they don’t have to face the consequences.

No, Edward was definitely not a monster.

Dedicated with much love to the victims of the Virginia Tech shootings – and the victims of the monsters that have come before.
