The Little Human

Summary:
Set in New moon, after Edward leaves. Bella hasn't spoken in four months. She barely eats, she wakes each night screaming and Charlie is at his wit's end. Bella takes a walk in the woods, with the intention of taking her own life. Instead, she meets a woman, young and beautiful, who offers her everything she wants - needs - to get Edward back, without three days of screaming pain and an insatiable bloodlust. But there is a price. Bella must give up her voice, and then, she has three days to get Edward to prove his love for her. She agrees readily - after all, why would she need a voice when she hasn't spoken in four months, and if Edward still doesn't love her, she'll probably just kill herself anyway. So, the spell is performed, and Bella goes to sleep that night without any nightmares, eager for her new life to begin. However, the results aren't quite what she expected...

Notes:
Yeah, I know, Little Mermaid rip-off Ok, I don't actually own a single copy of Twilight, New Moon or Eclipse. I know, *gasp* Shock horror, etc... But anywho, what I'm saying is that some of this might not be completely accurate, but I tried, ok? Just bear with me...

Edward, I love you. I always will, and there is nothing you can do to change that. You have no idea how badly I want to believe you when you say you love me too…

“I'm here, aren’t I? Begging you for your love, trying to stop you from killing yourself?”

I guess so. But you know what, you don’t have to leave me for my own protection again. You’ll never have to leave me again.

“Bella… I swear never to leave you, but I don’t want to put you in anymore danger.”

But Edward, you can’t! Haven’t you noticed anything? Didn’t you wonder why I was holding your wrist a minute ago?

He frowned, and brushed his own fingers against his wrist.

“That’s… Impossible!” His eyes widened as he, too felt the pulsing blood in his long-dormant veins. “I… I'm dead! I’ve been dead for ninety years!” I’d have to explain… This was going to be a fun conversation…

Let me tell you a story Edward. Don’t interrupt me till I'm done, ok?

He nodded, obviously still confused as to why I wasn’t speaking.

When you left, I was broken. I couldn’t do anything without it reminding me of you – reading, TV, especially music. You took my heart and soul, my reason for living, with you, and I had no motivation to carry on, except Charlie. I tried, for him, I really did. I ate, and drank, when he told me to, I went to school… But all I really wanted was an end to the pain. Then, yesterday, Charlie told me that he wanted me to move back with my mum. I – overreacted, and… well, I just felt like no-one wanted me anymore. I went into the woods, into the clearing where you told me you no longer loved me, and I tried to hang myself. I thought I heard you, but I couldn’t be sure. The next thing I knew, I was being given a drink by this beautiful woman. She told me this story, which I’ll explain later. Then she said that she could give me everything I needed to get you back, for the price of my voice. I thought she was going to change me, but she didn’t. She changed you, Edward. You’re human.

He shook his head slightly, as if he didn’t believe me. I intertwined our fingers.

“You – you’re not warm… And… Your blood doesn’t sing to me anymore…” He looked at me with his luminous green eyes, his face filled with the innocent wonderment of a child.

Gazing at his lovely features, I realised that his perfection before, which had always shocked me and made me feel unworthy, was nothing compared to this, this innocence, this pure happiness.

The old Edward, the Vampire Edward, had always carried the shadow of his past sins, the guilt of lives taken, had always been distanced from me by the lust he felt for my blood. But now, with that bloodlust gone, he would be free to fulfil his more… Human desires…

I blushed, and he ran his warm fingers across my cheek.

“Lord, how I’ve missed that… And now, I can enjoy it without wanting to rip your throat out… But Bella, you never finished your explanation… You can’t talk because you bartered your voice for my humanity?”

It’s a small price to pay – if I had to make the choice again, I’d chose the same. Technically Edward, I bartered my voice for you – I thought she was going to Vampire-ise me.

“I'm not sure Vampire-ise is a word, Love.” Edward chuckled. I pulled a face, and shrugged in a ‘who cares?’ expression.

Edward reached out to touch my face, stroking a few strands of hair from my eyes.

“I’ve missed you. Much as I long to know the full story of this woman in the woods, at the moment – and I can’t believe I'm saying this – but I'm actually glad you tried to kill yourself Bella. If you hadn’t, you never would’ve met this lady, and I’d still be a Vampire, and we’d still be apart… This” He waved his hands over his torso “This, being human – with you, it’s all I ever wanted. I would give anything up for you Bella, and my vampire traits are one thing I have often despised, simply because they stopped me from being everything I want to be with you. They stopped me from doing things like this…”

I saw it coming the second before it happened – I froze, and Edward paused, with his face just an inch from mine, afraid to upset me. I rolled my eyes and… Threw myself at him.

He toppled over backwards as I kissed him with everything I had in me. All my pain, my anguish, my longing and anger, all the love I felt for him, all the desire I’d had to conceal whenever we were together – the kiss we shared at that moment was something most couples did on their fist date, but for us, it was the furthest we’d ever gone. A kiss, fuelled by pure need, and the pining we’d been doing whilst we were separate, which shook me to my very core, and left both me and Edward panting for breath, when we surfaced five minutes later.

“Wow… That’s – gonna – take… Some getting used to” Gasped Edward, slightly pink in the face. “I forgot – we both need to breath now…”

Sleep Edward. You should take it easy. I’ll go make you some soup or something…

Edward looked at me nonplussed.

Human now, remember?

“I have to eat?” He sounded disgusted. I nodded.

Yes Edward, you have to eat. Didn’t you just say you’d do anything for me? That being human for me was all you ever wanted? Well, that means you have to eat. You looked after me, protected me, all those other times, and guess what? Now it’s my turn to look after you. I know how to be human Edward – that’s one thing I'm good at. Now, we’re gonna play doctors & nurses. You’re the patient, I'm the nurse.

“Oh really? And what are the doctor’s orders?” He grinned, raising one eyebrow. I pushed him down on the sofa, relishing the fact that he was no longer stronger than me.

Sleep.

I wrote, and obediently, he closed his eyes.

I kissed him on the forehead, as he had done to me so many times whilst he watched me sleep, and stroked his hair until his breathing slowed and his grip on my hand slackened. I sat back, and watched my angel sleep, my fresh-healed heart soaring.
