“Will you please stop that? I hate it when you blame yourself for things.”
“I just can’t believe I almost left you. I don’t care what my reasoning was; I nearly destroyed everything. I would have been miserable, and I don’t even want to remember what Alice saw about you.”
I hated myself for all of it. Bella had a worried look on her face. Her elusive thoughts were taunting me. I wanted so badly to hear those thoughts now. I wrapped my arms around her.
“I want you to stop that right now, Edward Cullen. It’s my fault that Alice saw that. I wanted her to. I know how her visions work so I used them. I planned to kill myself if you left in hopes that she would see what I was going to do. I knew that if she saw me committing suicide she would be able to talk you out of leaving. I could see the pain you were trying to hide. You can’t hide that from me. I love you too much not to see when you are hurting. Don’t feel bad about it. I made sure that you loved me before I did it. That’s why I told you to kill me if you truly didn’t love me anymore. Don’t blame yourself. Please.”
She pulled away from my chest and kissed me. I could feel her apology in the way her lips moved against mine. I responded to it with love and forgiveness. I didn’t blame her one bit. This was all my fault, but I didn’t want to argue with my angel any longer than I had to; I loved her too much. A car pulled up in the driveway, and I heard Alice and Jasper’s thoughts.
I swear, that girl is perfect for you, Edward. She’s a diabolical genius!
I’m sorry, Edward. This is my fault. I should be able to control myself better. I shouldn’t have lost it when I smelled her blood.
Of course Jasper was blaming himself. He’d been doing that for a long time. Bella let them in. Alice gave her a big hug and said, “Great thinking, I couldn’t have convinced him without you.” Jasper looked at Bella apologetically.
“Bella, I’m so sorry. I should have controlled myself better at your party. One drop of blood and I went insane. Edward never would have gotten it in his head that leaving you would be best if I hadn’t freaked out. I’m sorry. I don’t even deserve to be forgiven.”
Bella looked at him sternly.
“The next vampire to blame themselves is going to be tossed around like a giant football by Emmett. I’m tired of it. It’s my fault. I should have opened the gift more carefully. It’s my own stupid fault that I got a paper cut. Quit making a big deal out of NOTHING! PLEASE!!!”
Jasper sent a wave of calm over the room. Alice tossed a box to me.
“I got it from your closet. Hopefully you’ll need it. As a matter of fact, I’m begging you to need it.”
If anyone deserves a place in our family, it’s Bella. You love her. She loves you. You are the only thing being stubborn. Rosalie is likely to be nicer if you change Bella as well. That’s your biological mother’s ring. Please see reason. The two of you can’t exist happily without each other. If you refuse to change Bella, you’re hurting more than yourself. You’re hurting Bella and the rest of us, even Rosalie; kind of. I like the way she thinks. Letting Emmett toss you guys around is an appropriate punishment.
I stared at the box. I had sat in my room many times and stared at this box and the ring inside of it, imagining it on Bella’s finger. I wanted her to be mine, but I could never do that to her. I didn’t want to take away her soul. My phone rang.
“Hey, Edward; today is a trial run of a new family holiday.”
Emmett was on the other end of the line; this conversation could be dangerous.
“What holiday is that?”
“Gang Up on Edward and Make Him See Reason Day! So to start off the Festivities we have Dr. Carlisle Cullen, leader of the Cullen coven.”
“Edward, I agree with your decision to stay wholeheartedly, but you know what the result of this will be. She will have to be changed. Emmett says that the rules of this holiday are that you can’t talk or defend yourself against anything that anyone of us says. You may finish out high school, but after you graduate she must become one of us. There is no other way. Esme is next.”
This one would be the toughest to resist.
“Edward, you two need each other. You and Bella being apart is like splitting up Carlisle and I, or Jasper and Alice, or Emmett and Rosalie, and expecting us to survive like that. The two of you can’t be apart any more than the other couples I just named. I don’t care if you think you would be acting selfish; Bella is as much a member of this family as you are. The only difference is that she isn’t a vampire yet. Neither of you can survive without the other. You know that, and I hope you never forget it. Your lives would be empty without the other there to complete you. Emmett wants to share his opinion now.”
“I’m back. You really should listen to Carlisle and Esme. They’re both a hell of lot smarter than you. I don’t see why you are complaining so much. We do remember my story don’t we. Rosalie carrying me a hundred miles, while I was bleeding like crazy, and asking Carlisle to change me because she didn’t think she could do it herself. We may not have been in love yet, but the only thing that got me through my transformation was seeing her there. You are nothing without Bella. Before her you were such a bore, but now you actually know how to have a little fun. That girl has worked wonders on your personality. If you didn’t have her you wouldn’t go back to the way you were, you would be worse than before. Even Rose has something to say to you.”
“Edward, I know I haven’t been as nice as I should to Bella, but I don’t want you to depress yourself because you have to be a stubborn idiot.. The others are right. Quit being an idiot, Edward. She’s your entire world, and you’re hers. Don’t be stupid; marry her. You need her just as much as she needs you. Alice and I could use another sister, too. Make the decision that is best for the both of you. Make her Mrs. Isabella Cullen. The next time I see her there had better be a ring on her left hand, or Emmett and I will play catch and you will be the ball.”
The line cut off. I was surprised at what Rosalie had said. There was still a smile on my face from hearing the words “Mrs. Isabella Cullen”
“What are you smiling about?”
“I live in an extremely opinionated family. Apparently it is Gang Up on Edward and Make Him See Reason Day, today. Carlisle, Esme, Emmett, and Rosalie just made some very good points. Something Rosalie said had an effect on my smile reflex.”
Jasper and Alice grinned because they had heard her. Bella looked confused. Charlie walked through the front door.
“Why is there a green Porsche in my parking spot? Oh, hey Alice. Hello Jasper. I heard about the job that Carlisle was offered; did he take it? Which one of you does the car belong to?”
“Yes, he took it, and the car is mine. Carlisle put me in charge of Edward and Alice. I need some way to get around while they’re at school. I’m glad that Carlisle let us stay here. I like Forks.”
“Carlisle is a trusting man. I don’t think you’ll have too much trouble with them. Also, I would like to thank you three, Emmett, and Rosalie; I’ve never received an ounce of trouble from any of you.”
“You’re welcome. We’re not troublemakers unless we’re severely provoked. Emmett gets a little rowdy, but Rose keeps him in line, most of the time. Edward finally found a little lady to keep him in line, too. All of us guys have one. The girls are too lady-like to cause many problems. Alice is like a pixie. She is a sweetheart most of the time, but you have to watch your step or you’ll push the wrong button; my quick tempered little angel. Edward is more of a split personality. There’s the family’s Edward and Bella’s Edward; impassive and antisocial versus opinionated and noticeably alive.”- I gave Jasper the shut up glare- “I guess my little rant hasn’t been appreciated. The truth hurts, man. When you’re away from Bella, you look like you’re lost.”
“I hope you don’t try to abuse your authority and use it to taunt me. I could catch you, no matter how fast you ran, and I could make my Volvo catch that Porsche. Your behavior is no better when you’re away from Alice than mine is while I’m away from Bella.”
“Of all the things you could argue about. The two of you sound like Edward and Bella, who fight like an old married couple.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
We all laughed because Bella and I had said the same thing at the same time.
“An old married couple fights about things that are pointless and irrelevant. I don’t think that I need to say more.”
I glared at them both. They were enjoying the new family holiday way too much. Bella was blushing deep red as she shook her head. Charlie looked at us all and laughed again.
I’m glad that Bella met Edward. I’m not surprised to hear this. Renee said that she thought Edward was in love with Bella. I can see that she was right. His brothers and sisters treat her like a sister. It’s like she has siblings. I’m probably getting in the way. I’ll go see if there is a game on.
“I’m going to find something on TV, if that’s okay.”
“Actually, would you mind if I talked to you alone Charlie? I wanted to get your opinion on something.”
He walked towards the door and I followed him outside. He sat down in a chair on the porch. I turned the one next to it at an angle and sat down.
“I’m sort of an old-fashioned person and I believe in doing things the right way. I love Bella with all of my heart. So I wanted to ask you for permission to propose to your daughter. I couldn’t imagine spending the rest of my life with any one else.”
“Wow! I didn’t expect to be asked that question for a while. It doesn’t really surprise me, but don’t you think it’s a little soon? You haven’t even finished high school yet.”
“The wedding wouldn’t be until after graduation. Assuming that you approve and Bella agrees, of course.”
“I approve. You’re a great person, Edward, and I know that you would do anything to make Bella happy. The fact that you asked me for permission says a lot. I’m not the one you need to convince, though. Renee has some strong views on teen marriages. Good luck with that”
“Thank you, sir. I know that Renee isn’t exactly a young marriage enthusiast. Do you want to see the ring?”
“You have it with you?”
“I said I wanted your opinion on something. I picked out the smallest detail and used it to keep Bella from getting suspicious. She probably thinks that I’m trying to find a loophole in her gift restriction and asking you for help. At least, I hope so.”
“Bella has a gift restriction?”
“She told me that I wasn’t allowed to spend money on her birthday present.”
I shook my head, took the ring box out of my pocket, and showed the ring to Charlie.
“It’s beautiful. Where did you get it?”
“It belonged to my biological mother.”
He looked at the ring appraisingly and smiled.
“When are you going to ask her?”
“If it’s okay with you, I’m going to have Alice ask you if Bella can spend the night at my house. She’ll give whatever excuse she can come up with for that. When we get to the house, I’ll have her keep Bella busy upstairs while Jasper and I set up the living room. Once every thing has been prepared, I will have Bella cover her eyes, and I will lead her to the center of the decorations. I will then tell her to uncover and open her eyes, give her time to look around, get down on one knee, and propose.”
“You sure know how to plan ahead. I’ll agree to Bella spending the night. It sounds like you’ve thought all of this through very thoroughly. Let’s go back inside before Bella starts worrying.”
I put the ring back in my pocket and followed Charlie into the house. I eyed Alice and Jasper and they nodded with their thoughts.
“Would you like to see my new car, Charlie?”
