Bella’s POV

“If you knew what she had planned for you, Bella, I swear you’d be thanking me for this,” Laurent said, his thirst showing on his expression. Oddly enough, I didn’t care. It couldn’t be too bad, could it? Edward was gone; what reason did I have to live? I hated every bit of my life at the moment. The Edward in my head growled and yelled at me.

“Isabella Marie Swan, don’t you dare even think of giving up. There has to be something you can do to avoid this.”

Like what? I challenged. I stared at Laurent, wide eyed. He crouched down, ready to spring, and then leaped at me. I felt his teeth bite into my neck. I could feel my blood draining and all of the sudden it stopped. The pressure of him holding me down was gone. I summoned enough strength to look around and saw him running into the woods, followed by five gigantic wolves. I stared in amazement at my saviors for a few seconds and then I felt the fire burning through my veins. I writhed in pain as the flames burned inside me. At first I didn’t realize what was happening, but I after a little bit I remembered that Laurent had bit me before the wolves had chased him off. I was becoming a vampire. The intensity of the burn picked up and it took everything I had not to scream. If those wolves came back and found me, they would probably kill me. What was I going to do? I didn’t know how long I had been lying on the ground when a pair of arms picked me up and ran. The pain was at its worst and I couldn’t contain myself. I screamed. A few minutes later, I was being put on something soft.

Alice’s POV

I pulled my cell phone out of my pocket and dialed Edward’s number.

“Hello, Alice.”

“Edward, you have to come back to Forks, now! Don’t interrupt! I don’t have the whole story because all I saw was Bella writhing in pain and becoming a vampire. I found her in your meadow and she’s on the second day of the change.”

“WHAT?! How did this happen?”

“I don’t know, yet, but I’m sure as hell going to find out. I don’t see why a vampire would have bit her and left. I did pick up a fairly disgusting scent in the area, though.”

“The only thing I can think of with a disgusting scent would be the Quileute wolves, but I didn’t think there were any left. I’ll be there as soon as I can get a flight. I can’t believe this. I can hear her in the background. My sweet Bella, I didn’t want this life for you.”

“You can mope later, Edward. I’ll see you in three hours.”

I hung up and went back to Bella.

“Bella, can you hear me?”

“Alice?”

“Yes, it’s me. I saw you in the meadow and got there as fast as I could.”

I looked into the future and I saw that if I were to put more venom into her system the change would end quicker. I also saw that I would be able to control myself.

“Bella, do you mind if I bite you to put more venom into your veins? It will hurt worse for a little bit, but the transformation will be over sooner if I do.”

She nodded. I bit her wrists and ankles, trying not to taste the blood. When I was done she screamed louder than ever. I closed my eyes and saw that it would all be over in eighteen hours. Poor Edward, he would have to endure fifteen hours of seeing her in pain. The time passed quickly and before I knew it Edward was flying through the front doors.

“I’m going to call Carlisle. You can take over here.”

He nodded and gathered Bella in his arms, sitting on the couch. He held her close to him. She seemed to realize who was holding her after a while.

“Edward?”

“Bella, I’m so sorry.”

She screamed on pain again and he flinched, pulling her tighter as if to shield her from it. I walked out of the room and called Carlisle. Esme answered on the first ring.

“Alice, where are you?” Esme sounded worried. I probably should have called sooner.

“I’m back in Forks; at the house. I’ll explain everything that I can. When I was hunting, I had a vision that was one of the clearest ever; I could tell this was near future. I saw Bella, in Edward’s meadow, writhing in pain and when I looked further ahead I saw her as a vampire. I didn’t take the time to tell anyone; I ran to the nearest car dealership and stole the fastest one I could find. I left the car in Seattle and ran the rest of the way to the meadow. When I got there, sure enough, she was on the ground and obviously in a lot of pain. I picked her up and ran to the house. The first thing I did was call Edward. He’s with Bella right now. It will all be over in about fourteen and a half hours.”

“Edward is with Bella?”

“Yes. He’s sitting on the couch in living room with her in his arms.”

“Good!”

Leave it to Esme to pick out the least relevant detail and gush over it! I knew why she asked though. She hated that Edward had thought leaving would be better for Bella. Esme told him that all it would accomplish was making both of them miserable. She had been right, of course.

“Thanks for putting me on speaker phone. I think that tomorrow you should send Emmett and Jasper down here with Edward’s car and we’ll bring Bella up to Alaska after her first hunting trip. How does that sound?”

Carlisle answered my question after a few moments of hesitation.

“Is that the best way to do it?”

I looked at all the possibilities; that one was by far the best.

“Yes. Charlie had a search going for Bella, but when they found her truck abandoned they searched the woods and trail. There was nothing to find. The funeral is going to be held in a few days; when Renee gets to Forks. They’re going to bury an empty casket.”

“Well, it’s about time she became a vampire. I thought I was going to have to knock some sense into Edward. Hey, Alice, if I try to throw him through a tree, will it work?”

I laughed but looked anyway.

“He wouldn’t let you get close enough. You wouldn’t pull it off unless Bella helped or said that you could.”

“Damn, I’ll never get to put him through a tree.”

“I want to talk to Alice by myself, if the rest of you don’t mind.”

I heard Emmett make a few lewd comments and then I heard crash followed by reproaches from Carlisle and Esme.

“Hello, my sweet angel, whose beauty and kindness surpasses all others. How is Edward holding up? I’m glad I’m not there; all of the emotions in that atmosphere would drive me insane within minutes. I miss you, though. I love you.”

“I love you, too. I’ll see you tomorrow, and I’ll miss you every second until then. Every time Bella screams, he flinches and winces as if he can feel it, too. It’s hard to watch.”

“I want to leave right now. Can’t me and Emmett come now, please?”

“Ask Carlisle.”

He did and when he spoke again his voice was euphoric.

“I’ll see you in a few hours, my beloved!”

The line went dead.

I told Edward the plan and we waited for them to arrive. I heard the car pull up and Jasper ran through the door. He grabbed me into a loving hug before the surrounding emotions could start having an effect on him. He sent a wave of calm through the room. Emmett was right behind him and when he saw Edward he smiled.

“I deserve worse than being thrown through a couple of trees. I thought you were creative, Emmett. Surely you can come up with something better than that.”

Bella found her voice.

“Nobody is throwing Edward through anything.”

Emmett laughed.

“I hate that soon you’ll be able to enforce that command.”

He looked at Bella and shook his head disapprovingly. We sat there for hours, talking, as Bella endured the final hours of the transformation.

Bella’s POV

I could feel the pain fading. The arms wrapped around me felt normal temperature, instead of cold. I knew that once the pain was gone it would all be over. I would be a vampire. I heard my heartbeat slowing and then I heard nothing but the others talking.

“It’s over,” said Alice. I heard a relieved sigh.

“Finally, that was worse than my own transformation.”

I felt a burning feeling in the back of my throat; I was thirsty. That was one of the drawbacks to being a young vampire; severe bloodlust. I sat up and looked at each of them.

“Well, maybe you’ll have better balance now, right, Bella?” Emmett was joking. He never ceased to find some way to make fun of me. I rolled my eyes and turned to look at Edward. He was looking at me wish a strange expression on his face.

“Just when I thought you couldn’t get any more beautiful.”

If I could have blushed, my face would have been deep red.

“What happened?! How did this happen?” Edward’s eyes were boring into mine. I took a deep, unnecessary breath.

“It’s a long story!”

“We all have plenty of time.”

I smiled at that.
