I positioned myself so that I could see everyone and began.
“In January I nearly got myself into a bit of trouble by being stupid and reckless in Port Angeles. Right in the middle of what I was doing, I heard Edward’s voice inside my head; the way he sounds when he’s angry. His voice was reminding me of the promise I had made; not to do anything reckless or stupid. Soon after that I found that I heard his voice when I was breaking that promise. After few days later, I was driving home when I saw a sign advertising two motorcycles for sale as they were; their condition wasn’t pretty. I asked about them, and the boy said to just take them. I wasn’t sure what I was going to do with them, and then I remembered that Jacob Black, my dad’s best friend’s son, was building a car. I took them to La Push and Jake agreed to fix them up. I gave him one of the bikes as payment. When they were finished, he taught me how to ride mine. I finally got moving and my plan worked. The plan was to hear his voice again; it didn’t hurt as much as everything else I did. After a few weeks of riding the motorcycle, I heard the voice less and less. I got desperate. I tried coming out here, but there was nothing. Then I thought of the meadow. Jake and I searched for it, but we never found it. I got bored one day while he was sick, so I decided to come look by myself. Just when I thought I was getting lost, I found it.”
Edward held up a hand to stop me.
“I’m not even going to say what I had in mind. I can’t believe you did that. You promised.”
“Your promise was broken before you made it; there was no way you could guarantee that I wouldn’t have reminders. Now, let me finish. I found the meadow and a few minutes later I saw that I had a visitor. Laurent walked into the meadow. He had been hunting and caught my scent. He said that he was close to Forks as a favor to Victoria. She wanted him to get the lay of the land so that she could find me and kill me. She hates me and blames me for James’s death. Laurent was thirsty so he decided to kill me himself. He had just bit me when he was tackled by a giant wolf and they chased him away. I don’t know why, but at least they never came back for me. After that all I can remember is extreme pain, being lifted from the ground and carried away, being laid down on something soft only to be back in someone’s arms a while later. And that’s everything up until now.”
“Hey, Edward, I’m going to try my hand at telepathy here. Bella, correct me if I’m wrong, but I imagine that you’re thinking something along the lines of ‘I’m thirsty’; am I right?”
I laughed, only Emmett would make a joke of this.
“Of course, you’re right. We’d better go hunt. Just feeling her thirst is making my throat burn.”
Edward was looking at me.
“When we are done hunting, I need to have a talk with you, Isabella. If all of that weren’t my fault for leaving, you would be in big trouble, young lady.”
I blamed myself for every bit of what I heard. If I had stayed none of that would have happened.
Edward, I don’t think blaming yourself is the best idea. As much as she still loves you, Bella’s temper is still as quick as ever. Emmett won’t get to throw you through a tree, but Bella might.
“I’m considering the idea, Alice.”
I stopped dead in my tracks. Alice had been thinking.
“Okay, what is going on? Why is everyone talking at the same time?”
“We’re not talking, Bella, we’re thinking.”
“Aww man, not another one; I swear, no privacy.”
I smiled down at my beloved Bella and thought, another telepath, love. A look of shock and comprehension overtook her features.
“Don’t even try sucking up to me with things like that last word until I get a satisfying explanation.”
“Alice, Jasper, Emmett, I sincerely apologize for all of the snide remarks I have ever made in response to your thoughts. I now know how you feel.”
“They fight worse than vampires and werewolves that are locked in the same room.”
“Shut up, Emmett. Nobody asked for your input.”
Chill out, you two. You love each other for crying out loud. This arguing is pointless. Now apologize to each other willingly or I will keep the both of you under an extreme calming influence until we get back to the others in Alaska.
Jasper’s thoughts were scolding and for a moment he sounded like Carlisle.
“I’m sorry, Edward. I shouldn’t be so hard on you, but I still want an explanation.”
“I’m sorry, too. All of this is my fault. I never should have left in the first places. I wanted to keep you safe from what I am. I didn’t want this life for you. You deserve so much better than walking the earth, soulless and bloodthirsty, until the end of time. I love you too much. It killed me to leave, but I wouldn’t condemn you to an eternity of night and bloodlust. All of my efforts were in vain.”
“Jasper, Emmett, let’s give these two some privacy.”
They walked out the door. I looked at Bella.
“I still love you. I never stopped loving you; not for one second. You are the only reason that I exist happily. I love you, Isabella Marie Swan.”
Bella looked into my eyes.
“I love you, too, Edward. I’m sorry that I broke my promise; it was stupid.”
She put her arms around me and buried her face in my chest. I held her close for a few minutes. As soon as the thought came to me, I pulled back and put my fingers under her chin, tilting her head back. We stared into each other’s eyes and then I lowered my lips to hers. I kissed my lovely Bella the way I had always wanted to. The feel of her lips against mine was different but still wonderful. Her lips parted and I massaged her tongue with mine. I pulled Bella closer.
Hurry up you two.
You’re testing my limits. If you don’t stop soon, I’m going to start kissing Alice, and I just might not stop for a very long time.
Be nice to Jasper. The two of you can do whatever you want when we get to Alaska.
I pulled away.
“The annoying and intrusive thoughts are right; we need to hunt.”
We walked outside.
It’s about time!
“Let’s find a place and start hunting.”
I nodded and took Bella’s hand. We ran into the woods and found a place to start hunting.
