Bella’s P.O.V.

After Edward dropped me off at home, I walked up the driveway and to the front door. Edward and I had both agreed that it would be better if he wasn’t there when Charlie found out about him being back. He was going to come back when Charlie was sleeping. I opened the door and walked into the house to find Charlie watching a sports game, as usual. This was going to be a long night. Hopefully he was in a really good mood.

“Hey Bells,” he said as I walked by.

“Hi Dad.” He seemed to be in a pretty good mood.

“You‘re home late,”

“Ummm, yeah,”

“Were you hanging out with Alice?” he asked.

“Yeah, I was.” And all of the rest of the Cullens.

“Where is Alice?” he asked me, looking in the direction of the door as if she was about to walk in.

Oh shoot. Now it was going to be the time for telling him Edward was back. “Ummm, she’s staying at her house,” I told him.

“That isn’t good. She shouldn’t be staying there all alone. Didn’t you tell her she was still welcome here?”

“Well, Dad, she isn’t alone.”

“What do you mean?” he asked.

Oh no! This was it. Brace yourself. “Ummm, well, you see… the rest of the Cullens are back.” I had to look away after that. I really did not want to go through this. A few seconds had passed and there was not any screaming or yelling. That was odd. I decided to look back at him. That was a really bad idea. There wasn’t any screaming or yelling because it was probably physically impossible for him to do so at the time. Charlie’s face was all puckered up and purple. There was a little red, too. His body was very tense. It looked like he was about to explode. And then he did.

“What?! They’re back?! All of them?! How dare they! How dare he! After what he did to you?! Bella, I forbid you from ever seeing him again!”

That set me off. He was treating me like a baby! I could take care of myself. “Dad, you can’t make me never see him again!”

“Oh yes I can!”

“No you can’t! What about school, huh? He’ll still have to go to school!”

“Well… well… we’ll home school you!” he managed to come up with.

“That’s crazy Charlie! You can’t take me out of school and home school me for two months! And what if I don’t want to stay away from him?”

“What are you talking about, Bella? He broke your heart! He left you….” he didn’t finish that sentence. We both knew what happened, anyways.

“It was all a misunderstanding,” I told him.

“Really?”

“Yes.” I really wish I hadn’t gone into that. How in the world was I going to explain it to him without him thinking I was lying?

“Explain please.”

“Well, you see…” what can I tell him to make him believe me? The truth. I’d tell him the truth. “When they moved that day, I thought he was going because he didn’t love me anymore. That turned out to be a lie. It was just a huge misunderstanding. That’s all. If I hadn’t thought he didn’t want me anymore, I probably wouldn’t have been such a mess.”

“It was just a small misunderstanding that made you like that?”

I couldn’t understand why he was angry about this. I thought my little story would cheer him up. “Yes.”

“Bella, can’t you see what he’s done to you?”

“What has he done to me? These past months have been all my fault.”

“Bella, what if he does leave you later because he doesn’t love you? I don’t want to see you like that again. I won’t be able to take it then. I don’t think you will either. He’s like a drug to you.”

“He’s not a drug! I love him, that’s all.” Although the way I said it didn’t make it sound like nearly as much as I really loved him.

“I know you do. But…. But I loved you mother-”

“Dad-”

“No, Bella, let me talk. I loved your mother. But when she left, after about a month, I got over it. You didn’t. You probably would have been just as bad as that first week the entire time if it weren’t for Jacob.”

I really wished he didn’t mention Jake. It reminded me of earlier today. The hurt expression on his face as he drove away. I really did not want to think about that right now.

“I’m not going to keep arguing with you Dad. I know what you think, but I’m not going to stay away from Edward, no matter what you say,” I told him. I was ready to go up to my room and wait for Edward.

“I don’t think so Bella. I’m your father and you will obey my orders.”

“Do I need to remind you Charlie that I am an adult?”

“As long as you are living under my roof you will listen to me,” He was getting really angry again.

“Okay,” I said.

“Really? I thought you would be more stubborn than that.”

“Oh, I am. I meant ‘Okay, I’ll move out.’” I told him. That did it. His face turned that purplish color again, and I regretted saying that. “I don’t want to move out Charlie. I just don’t want you ordering me around like a baby. I can take care of myself. Really. Please just trust my decision.” He didn’t say anything else. I thought I would go upstairs and let his anger die down alone. “Now if you don’t mind, I’m going to go to my room now,” I told him. Then I left the room and went upstairs to my room to wait for Edward.

It was then that I realized how much I missed him since he dropped me off. I hadn’t noticed it during Charlie’s and my fight. But now it hit me hard. I hoped the time would pass quickly, though I knew it wouldn’t.

When I got to my room, I went straight to my bed and lied down on it. Today had been really tiring, and I was worn out. I laid day-dreaming of Edward. He really did love me. I felt so good inside at the thought. And I could breath again. I felt terrific. I rolled over onto my side to face the window and wait for him to come through it. When I did I felt something scratch my side. It felt like paper. I sat up, looked down, and saw a folded piece of paper with my name written on it. I didn’t recognize the handwriting. Though it was beautiful, it wasn’t one of the Cullens’. I picked it up, unfolded it, and started reading. After the second sentence, my heart stopped and then started up again at double time. I read even faster.

Dear Bella,

I’m through chasing after you. It’s time for you to come to me. I have something that I think you would like back. You know your friend, Jacob? Yes. He’s going to be keeping me company until you come to get him. You better hurry up. He’s getting restless. And a little rude. I can’t wait to see you.

Victoria

I could have known who sent it even without reading her name. No! No! No! This couldn’t be happening! She couldn’t have Jake! He would’ve killed her before she could. The pack would’ve come! They would’ve finally gotten her. Not the other way around! This couldn’t be happening!

It was a prank. That was it. Jake was getting back at me for hurting him so badly. No. He wouldn’t do that. I knew that. This was too big a deal for him to prank me with. Him or any other member of the pack.

No! How did this happen?! I needed Edward now! I headed over to my phone and started to dial the number, the note still in my hand. Then a pair of icy, hard arms wound around me. I hung up and turned around to face him. He could see the panic in my eyes. I could see that from the expression on his face. He knew something was wrong.

“Alice told me you were going to call. What’s wrong?” he asked.

I tried to find my voice but couldn’t. I guess it was a good thing I didn’t need to talk to him over the phone. I gave him the note. He took it from me and began reading after giving me a questioning look. After reading it, he looked up at me, a different panic in his eyes than mine. We both knew that this was bad.
