I turned quickly to the sound of metal ripping.

I cursed quietly in Italian, one of the words I had picked up from Felix when he was ranting at me for being a bad member of the guard. Hadn’t I told them not to kill her? Martha should at least know that killing her wasn’t smart.

I quickly shoved my hand out, tearing Becka away from Jade, who was now missing a large chunk of her arm. Becka looked up at me, eyes black and teeth bared. Jade also glanced up, though her ruby eyes seemed to be filled with a relief that wouldn’t last long.

I dropped my shield after giving Becka a hard glance, and looked around quickly, absorbing the scene before me. Aaron and Alex were busy restraining Felix and Alec, while Edward was fighting Demetri. It seemed that he had a clear advantage because of his ability, and that now he was just trying to end the fight.

“Jade, stop controlling the members of my guard this instant. I never gave you permission to have your own vendetta, and I know neither of my brother’s did as well,” Aro said in a severe voice. I started slightly. I never heard Aro use such a tone ever.

Jade looked at him for a moment before her eyes narrowed. “You’re not the only one who is allowed to give me orders, Aro,” she hissed. “Caius told me to do whatever I could to bring them back, and I followed what he said.”

Aro stared at her with the same perplexed expression I was sure covered my own face. Why would Caius start acting out independently? Is that why he had come to America, without the rest of the guard, or without his brothers?

“Why?” Aro breathed.

Jade laughed once, though there was no humor in her voice. “I think it’s fairly obvious, actually. But of course, you both are naïve enough that you wouldn’t be able to figure it out.” When neither of us said anything and the only sounds in the surrounding forest were the cracklings of a fire and growls erupting from Demetri as he tried to get out of Edward steel grasp, she spoke again. “The Volturi is growing soft. You let humans get away with knowing our secrets, grow lax in punishments, and grow weaker in the eyes of all of our kind around the world.”

A low growled fell from Aro. I glanced at him once, and then back at Jade, who was smiling smugly at both of us. “Jade, you know nothing of what goes on in the Volturi. Just because I don’t tell Caius everything—“

Aro was interrupted by a snort from his Asian guard. “Do you really think that’s the only thing Caius is upset about? He’s power-hungry; you know that better than anyone else. He is the only powerless ancient, though what Marcus does in slightly diminished by his…emotional state. Though you of all people know about that best.”

Aro’s eyes widened and I looked from vampire to vampire in surprise. Many people already knew about Aro taking out Marcus’s mate, who had been in his sister as a mortal. Why was in such a big deal? Then I realized that the only way she would have known was if she…

“You controlled the masters!” I exclaimed, shock pulsing through me.

She smirked. “Only Marcus. Caius was the one who convinced to go along with his plan. Everyone would have noticed if Aro had been acting odd, so I left him alone. But I got Marcus to agree with Caius and send out people to bring you back.”

“Why would you even want us all back?” Aaron snarled, though it was slightly strained from the force it took to keep Felix in his grasp. “And why are you going against Aro? He’s everyone’s master.”

Jade’s eyes narrowed at him. “Aren’t you listening at all? Really, try and pay attention,” she said severely, earning a growl from him and me. Aaron gave me a quick glance and I nodded. We would have to do this carefully…

“What is that?” Jade suddenly said fearfully, staring at something only she could see. She took a fearful step back, straight towards Becka, who stiffened slightly. Her lips curled up faintly, a cruel hopefulness suddenly plain on her features. I tensed, but didn’t do anything. At this point, whatever Jade got herself into, she would have to get herself out of as well. I was done caring.

I glanced at Edward, and saw that he was having more trouble with Demetri than he had been before. I moved to help him, but not before Demetri jerked out of his grasp.

“Look out!” I cried out, before Demetri violently pushed Edward, causing him to knock into a tree, which broke in half, bringing Edward down with it. The he moved to Becka, killing intent in his eyes.

I moved too fast for him; before he was three feet forward, I had him in my grasp, holding him back with my teeth at his throat, ready to tear off his head.

“Jade, release my guard form your power this instant,” Aro snarled. “You have no right to steal their minds from them.” His burgundy eyes were now black, and he actually seemed angry. It was so different from his normal calm façade, that I was actually slightly frightened.

Jade smiled evilly at him. “If you don’t like my power, then why did you invite me to join the guard? Poor planning on your part Aro.”

“It’s safer to have you with my guard then out alone in the world, angry and uncontrolled. I did a service to the world by taking you under my wing,” Aro growled.

Jade rolled her eyes, and something in me flashed red. She obviously had grown smug in the past months, and all from causing my family and I pain and misery. Her eyes changed though, to an almost glowing in intensity, and Demetri, Felix and Alec went limp. Alex, Aaron and Edward all released them, and they stumbled forward slightly.

Behind Jade, Becka smiled triumphantly. I stared at her for a long moment, trying to figure out where this sudden viciousness came from. And then it all clicked, and a small smile played on my lips as well.

Jade gave away her safe card, and now nothing was holding us back.
