Chapter 2: Amused

"So who wants Chinese?" Lillian asked as soon as we got in the house.

"Oh man that sounds good right about now." Mikey said as he threw his book bag to the ground with a thud.

"Dude where’s the remote?" Tony as he plopped on the couch and looked at me as if I knew exactly where to find it.

"I don’t know. Why don’t you check under you?" I said as I walked past him on the couch. "I’ll be in my room if you need me." I ran up the stairs and out of the corner of my eye I noticed Phil slumped up against the hallway in front of my bedroom door. "Hey Phil, what’s up? Are you gonna tell me now because you did promise me you would, right?" I said looking over at him opening up my bedroom door.

"Yeah about that. Umm… Can I come sit with you for a minute?" He asked leaning forward. Phil, Tony, and Mikey usually just walked right on in my room whenever they wanted to, so why was he asking?

"Sure Phil, are you okay?" I said as I put my hand on his shoulder and looked up at him. I grabbed his arm and basically dragged him into my room to sit him on my bed. "So I’ll ask you again what’s up?" I spoke a little faster now. Was I getting giddy, nervous even? What?

"There’s something that I’ve been wanting to tell you since I met you. Please tell me you won’t freak out or anything?" He spoke slowly and was cautious about looking at my face.

"Yes but first let me tell you this, anything that you have to say you can say it in front of the other two." I saw a bit of a smile form in the creases of his mouth.

"Well they all ready know this, because they went through the same thing that I did about six years ago before we met you."

"Uh, ok so what are you talking about?" I felt a little scared about what he was trying to tell me.

"I’ll tell you but promise me you won’t laugh or think that I’m crazy." He said staring into my eyes. I just nodded and I stared right back into his deep blue eyes. "I’m a person that can turn into a…" he paused to lower his voice, "a wolf." He turned away from me to hear my reaction. I was hesitant to answer him or even think.

"Umm… So you think that you’re a wolf, and Mikey and Tony know about this too, and I didn’t, until just now?" I said this fighting back a smile.

"No, Tony and Mikey are werewolves too. They told me to tell you when I thought that you trusted us enough to tell you." He looked at me now and I couldn’t hold in my giggle anymore. I burst out in a laughter that was too loud for my small, echoing room.

"Come on Sam you said you wouldn’t laugh at us. I’m serious I’ll show you, then maybe you’d believe me." He said grabbing my arm and pulling me up off the bed.

"No, maybe later. I’ve had too much for one night. That was a good joke though." I couldn’t stop laughing. The fall from earlier must have taken some brain cells away from me.

"Okay, how about tomorrow night? I’ll be able to show you then. Will you believe me after you see it?" He said as he slid his hand down my arm and placed his fingers through mine.

"Phil, I don’t know what to say to that." I stopped giggling and clenched his fingers tighter.

"Oh well I know what you could say, maybe that Phil’s an idiot and that the food’s here!" Mikey ran in and superman nose-dived across my bed. "So what have you guys been talking about up here?" He sat up and crossed his legs behind me. He looked too happy, with a huge grin. At the sight of Mikey we both dropped our hands.

"Phil and I were just talking about how you have an enormous crush on Elizabeth Hurst." I said turning around to punch his arm playfully.

"Yea whatever. Well the food’s here and it’s getting cold, so I’m gonna go ahead and eat!" Mikey said getting off my bed with a little pink blush showing on his cheeks and ran downstairs.

"We’ll talk later okay? Right now I’m very hungry." Phil said stretching with a yawn. "You coming?" His arm outstretched towards me and I just stood there.

"I’ll be down in a minute, go on and let me think." I said, my voice cracking on that last word ‘think’. What was there to think about? Phil and I are friends; he’s not a werewolf. How could I let myself think like that?

"Sam are you coming to eat? Your food’s getting cold!" My mom shouted at the bottom of the stairs.

"Yea mom, coming." I said, barely a whisper came out. I stood up, walked out of my room, closed my door and ran downstairs to the dining room to eat my Chinese food.

"Samantha, get up and go get ready for school!" Mom said hovering over me with her motherly smile. I must have fallen asleep while watching television after I ate.

"You seriously slept on the couch all night? Wow Sam that’s awesome!" I heard Tony say as he walked towards my half a sleep body on the couch. Still in the same clothes as yesterday, I got up, stretched and yawned.

"I guess so, what time did we finally go to sleep last night?" I said looking over at my mom.

"Well I had to drive Phil and Mikey home before eleven and Tony here stayed up till two in the morning playing video games, so he stayed over, but you were a sleep, I’d say, before ten." Mom said picking up soda cans from Tony’s night of video game playing.

" Wow that’s good and what time is it now?" Raising my eyebrows to look at both of them.

"It is exactly 6:00 AM," Tony said before mom could even make a sound.

"Tony you need any new clothes to wear for school today? I can drive you to your house for you to get some." My mom asked picking up her car keys and heading for the door.

"Yea sure Lily, I guess that I’ll see you later then Sam." Tony said

"yup." I said and ran upstairs to go get myself ready for school. With that my mom walked out the door with Tony and left.

I usually don’t take much time on getting dressed in the morning. I simply brush my curly hair, throw on a clean shirt then a warm hooded sweatshirt and some old, raggedy, jeans. Today’s jeans have a huge hole in the knee believe it or not they’re one of the best pairs that I own. I love them; they’re just so comfortable on me. And as far as shoes go, I wear a pair of old, black Converse. This whole routine is usually done in about 15 minutes so I have plenty of time to eat breakfast.

"Sam, Sam, you in here?" Mikey came at the same time everyday, 6:20. So when he comes I know that I’m running about five minutes late. He ran upstairs like he usually does and of course flung my door open.

"Mikey how many times do I have to tell you to stop doing that!" I said folding my arms across my chest.

"Oh like a million, whatever. But Sam, since you are my best friend in the entire world and I love you so much, I got you something!" he said with a goofy smile.

"What, Why?" I said a little meaner than I’d meant my voice to sound.

"Aww silly little Sammy pie. Not that kind of a gift, it’s more of a problem of mine that I have to resolve. So I have a question to ask my best friend ever. Here it goes," He talked so excitedly it was hard to understand but I knew exactly what he was saying.

"Wait, are you talking about Elizabeth?" I paused for a second to let him nod. "Sorry I can’t help you with that kind of a thing."

"Hold on could you just listen to me for a second? Please?" He actually got down on the floor and begged at my feet.

"Fine, carry on with your question." I sighed and cocked my head to the side.

"Ok. So there’s this chick, and I think that I might like her and want to ask her out but I can’t…" he said getting up from the floor.

"Or wont and the chick’s name is Elizabeth. I have classes with her all day." I said interrupting him. "So what’s the almighty question?"

"Umm… So what all did Phil say to you last night? Did he go into the whole imprint stuff or what?" Mikey said fast but he was serious, and I of course did not know what he was talking about.

"What do you mean? Phil told you what we were talking about last night." I walked towards my bed, grabbed my book bag, and slung it over my shoulder.

"Well he really didn’t have to tell me, I knew all along what you two were talking about. Besides it’s not like you believe us anyway. Because if he would have told you about my imprinting situation than you might just understand what I’m saying, but since you don’t believe that we’re all werewolves than I guess it wouldn’t be right for me to ask." He said turning around and heading for the door to go downstairs.

"Wait a minute. I did not once say that I didn’t believe you guys, I just think that you’re all nuts." I said with a smile and a little giggle escaped along with it. He ran downstairs faster than I could finish my sentence.

"It doesn’t matter. All though it might to Phil. Come on we’re going to be late. Your mom’s outside waiting for us." Mikey yelled from downstairs.

"Wait I have to eat something or I’ll be starving during second block!" I yelled as I was running downstairs faster than my dainty legs would allow and ran to the kitchen for a pop-tart pack. I grabbed four packs one for all of us.

"Hurry up! She’s backing out the driveway now! Man your mom is hasty!" Mikey said as he ran out the door and got in the van.

This wasn’t the first time that my mom had started to leave without me. She does this so that I hurry up and get out the door. ‘Honk! Honk!’ I ran out the front door, locked it and jumped into the last row of seats in the van. Which was now at the bottom of the driveway.

"Gees mom! What’s the big hurry?" I said pulling on the seat belt having a hard time with the strap; which was making me even angrier.

"Nothing honey just trying to make it to the bakery in enough time." Lillian said as she looked at me through the rearview mirror, and turned up the volume on the stereo. My mom works at the bakery downtown and apparently her boss gives her crap when she comes in a minute late.

"Oh, and what’s the specialty today? Road kill, Sam a la carte?" I yelled back at her and slumped into my seat. I sat in the back with Phil sitting next to me with a smile on his face as he glared at me with amazement. I stuck my tongue out at him and his smile grew into laughter.

"What?" I said as mean as I could.

"You! What’s wrong with you?" He said through his laughter.

"Me? There’s something wrong with you guys! Thinking that you’re all werewolves yea that’ll be the day. Let me tell ya!" I said sarcastically, he just kept laughing at me. "What!" I said narrowing my eyes at him and sticking my tongue back out.

"You better stop that, or you’re face will freeze that way forever." Phil said as he stopped laughing with a slight smile and turned to face the back of the seat in front of him.

"When are you going to show me then? Huh?" I said grabbing his arm. He just looked at my hand and smiled.

"When you say that you believe us." He said as the van came to a stop, and he got out. I followed shortly after and caught up to them.

I usually walk in between Phil and Mikey, but today I walked behind all of them with a slow step. Why should I walk with a bunch of crazy people that never say thank you or that they care about me? I felt a hot tear burn down the side of my left cheek and felt a cold figure walking next to me.

"Hi, remember me? I’m Carter." He said as he stuck his hand out as a gesture for me to shake his hand. Shoving his hand out of the way, I dropped my head even farther and walked faster. He kept up with my speed the whole time.

"What?" I stopped and stared at my shoes.

"I just wanted to say hi and tell you my name just in case you had forgotten it from last night. Carter." He said shoving his hand back at me. I sighed and shook it hard, along with gritting my teeth together.

"Today’s just not a very good day, Carter." With a half-hearted smile I started walking fast again. I slightly looked up and saw Phil staring back at me.

"Sam? Is he bothering you again?" Phil said standing in front of me now; I didn’t even see him run over. He was in a protective position in front of me with his arms out at his sides and his knees were bent like he was ready to fight.

"Phil, what are you doing?" I said staring at his back cocking my head to the side.

"Yea Phil what are you doing? Oh I get it so you must be his girlfriend, is that it? Or am I wrong?" Carter said with a calm tone staring at Phil’s chest like he could see straight through him to see me. I pushed Phil behind me.

"No! I am not his girlfriend! I’m not now, nor will I ever be! I don’t like him that way and he knows that." I turned around to look at Phil but he was already gone and walking through the main lobby doors. Tony and Mikey just stood there and looked disgusted with how I just treated my friend. Carter raised one eyebrow and kept quiet like he was amused with it. "Sorry. I didn’t mean to yell at you, it’s just the way that everything is going today, its making me a little annoyed."

"I can relate to that and please don’t ever tell me that you’re sorry unless you have a good reason to." He put his hand on my shoulder; there was that sweet smell again. He dropped his hand and walked with me inside. The bell rang and since we have the same first block together he walked with me there too. He started telling me about the rest of his family and how he had just recently went to his brother’s wedding and how his brothers wife was so beautiful in the gown she wore. As he was describing all of his summer to me, I glanced at a scar that I found on his arm; it looked like a dog bite.

"Where did you get that?" I pointed to it to show him what I was talking about. We both walked into the class and sat down next to each other.

"Oh this, from a dog, a big mean dog. I had to be sent to the hospital immediately. But it was too late, I had lost a lot of blood already and that’s when I met my dad, Dr. Cullen. I was an orphan and Dr. Cullen didn’t think that I would survive unless he…" He paused and the teacher walked into the room.

"When did this happen to you? I mean when were you bitten?" I whispered leaning in closer to his arm to examine the scar and of course smell him.

"Do you mean the dog bite or the Vamp…." He said in a lower whisper than mine not finishing his sentence because the teacher came over to our desks.

"Excuse me, but do you have anything that you want to add to today’s lesson?" The man was tall and had a big stomach like a pregnant woman I had to smile. "Something funny Miss Thompson?" He said tapping my desk with the marker in his hand.

"No it’s just that today’s lesson is very amusing." I smiled at him to make him go away. And glanced out of the corner of my eye to see Carter. He had a smirk on his face but it wasn’t an ugly smirk; it was the smirk of an angel.
