Chapter Notes: Took me some time, but here it is.
Hope you enjoy. Thanks for reading, you keep me motivated!! :DD
I feel the need to explain Melanie's power and how it can possibly work on Bella: The simplest way I can put it is that Melanie doesn't go inside a person's head to influence their senses (edward didn't cover this in this chapter). Melanie literally is there with the person, she speaks the words that she wants the person to hear and those words travel to the person even when she's at great distance. She can make a person touch something that no one else can see, she literally makes it appear only to that one particular person (or group) same goes with sight, she makes that something appear to only those certain people she wants, and same with smell. So in a way, yes , they're like holograms.
Chapter 19: Visits
“Good morning, Bella.” Connor said walking into my dull hospital room.
“Hi.” I beamed, happy to see his smiling face instead of Edward’s. I opened my arms wide, I embraced him and kissed him on the lips, missing him already.
He noticed I was acting too attached towards him, “what happened? You’re seeming too excited to see me.”
I soft of lied, “just happy to be alive, it hadn’t sunk in how close I was to dying.” It was partly true, the other part was Edward.
Connor’s eyes saddened, “I know, I haven’t stopped thinking about it.” Connor’s eyes sparkled then, as if remembering something enlightening. “Charlie, Jacob, Billy, and Jasmine are here to see you.” Connor smiled brightly.
“They finally came!” I laughed.
“They’re signing in, I saw them.” Connor said, “Charlie looks incredibly worried, frantic, really. You’ll see when he comes in.”
I sighed, “just glad my mom didn’t come, she’s usually worse than Charlie.”
“She can’t come, she called me yesterday, telling me how much she wanted to be here but couldn’t, she was too much in a hurry to ask for the number to this room, and since your phone broke in the crash…” He said.
I laughed, “I know.”
A hurried knock was at the door, they didn’t wait for a response, the door swung open and Charlie bounded through the door. “Bella!” He came over and hugged me.
“Hey, dad.” I said.
“Are you all right?” He looked me over, “Connor told me, you were in a crash, you’ve got burns, broken bones, your car was destroyed. I’m sorry I couldn’t come as soon as it happened but work--they got rid of two employees and we’re short on cops-- and then when I wanted to come visiting hours were over and today was the only day I could come!”
I patted him on the back, “it’s all right, dad,” I reassured him, “I understand.”
“I’m just glad you’re alive!” Charlie said, “this is the second time you wind up in the hospital and you’re severely hurt.” He said.
My eyes widened at the memory, I instinctively covered the scar in my hand.
“Why are you so prone to accidents, Bells?” Jake chuckled behind Billy’s wheelchair.
“They like me.” I smiled and opened my arms to hug him.
“I’m glad you’re alive, too, Bella. Looking at your truck, it’s a miracle you are.” He said.
“Why didn’t you visit me earlier?” I asked.
“Billy wouldn’t let me until Charlie did, he said Charlie was rightfully suppose to see you before us.” He looked at his father who just nodded and smiled.
“I just came back today, from my parents, I had no idea, Jake failed to mention.” Jasmine said in her defense.
“When will she’ll be out of the hospital?” Charlie asked Connor.
Connor shrugged, “she’s fairly injured, and with those burns on her legs, I’ll say a couple of weeks.” He looked at my reaction and smiled.
“What about the wedding?” Jacob asked. “It’s coming by quick, will she heal in time?”
“Doubt it, she’ll be lucky if she does.” He said, his eyes saddened once more. I hated seeing him sad.
“So what are you going to do, walk down the isle with a cast on your arm and leg and bandages all over your legs?” Jacob smiled at the picture, “lovely honeymoon.” He chuckled.
I glared, he instantly snapped his mouth shut. I didn’t know how to respond, Connor and I still hadn’t decided what we were going to do with the wedding.
“We’ll see how she quick she heals, if not we might have to postpone.” Connor said not looking at me.
Everyone left a couple of minutes before visiting hours were done, except for Jacob, I knew he wanted to talk about what happened before my accident. He promised to catch up to them at home, I guessed he brought his own car.
“I smell them here.” He said as soon as he closed the door behind him. His nose flared. “I know they’re here Bella, I don’t know how many but I know they are. I saw the doctor when I came back from the cafeteria, we exchanged glances. I can’t believe they are here! So close to home!” He nearly growled. “Did you know they were here?”
I hung my head, I had to tell him the truth, he’s find out eventually. “I knew Carlisle was working at this hospital. I found out about a week ago when I dropped by to see Connor and go to dinner.”
Jacob raised his eyebrows, “so you knew they were here the night the pack had the meeting? Bella we asked you!” He sounded hurt.
“I know, Jake, I’m sorry, I don’t know why I did it.” I apologized.
Jake looked at me and smiled, “so Dr. Cullen is your doctor? Must be awkward.” He pointed.
“No. Not with Carlisle,” I corrected, “it is with Edward being here.” I said.
Jakes expression turned furious, “he’s here too?”
“He’s one of the doctors in training in this ward, along with Connor.” I explained.
“Did Connor recognize him?” He pried for more information.
I nodded, “I’m sure he did, he’s been leering at Carlisle and Edward every time they come in the room. He knows something is going on, but he hasn’t asked, he wants to though.”
“What are you going to tell him?” Jake asked.
“I don’t know, the truth. If Carlisle lets me, it’s their secret I’m letting out.” I said.
“Can’t we just move you from hospitals?” Jacob suggested.
I shook my head, “we could but this is the only hospital around here with a burn center. If I go to any other hospital they may not be able to treat my wounds as good as here.”
“Damn,” Jacob cursed. His eyebrows furrowed, “what the hell are they doing back here anyway?”
“You know they move around. I’m not exactly sure why they came here, though. So close to Forks.”
“Because of you, maybe.” Jacob said.
I shrugged. “I found out one thing, though.” I said, I could feel myself getting angry.
“What?” Jake noticed my sudden change in mood.
“Remember Melanie?” I asked him.
“The new vampire in the Cullen clan? Yes, what about her?” Jake asked confused of why I would ask of her.
“She’s the voice in my head, and yours.” I explained. “She’s the reason for the visions of the Cullens in Phoenix. The reason I’ve been feeling like I’m going crazy. Why the pack is also having visions of the Cullens. Why you told me that you saw the Cullen’s plans of coming here, meeting me.”
“W-what?” Jake staggered, “how, why?”
“The why is not entirely clear,” I said, I wasn’t believing the reason Edward gave me, “but the how, it’s her power; she can influence the senses. Make you hear, see, touch, taste, and smell whatever she wanted you to.” I explained, getting excited to finally crack the reasons for my internal battle.
“She’s the one that was at the house two days ago, wasn’t she?” Jacob asked.
“I think so, I’m not entirely sure.” I thought hard, “yes she was, she made me see Edward’s face in the glass of water. That’s why I dropped it, remember?”
Jacob snarled, “yes.”
“Visiting hours are over, Jake.” Connor peered through the door, making Jake and I jump.
“Crap.” Jacob murmured, he wanted to know more. “Yeah, ok.” He said to Connor. “Bye Bells, we’ll talk more whenever I can come back and visit.” He said, with a knowing stare.
I nodded, “bye, Jake.”
“You’re healing well,” Carlisle noted as he examined by burns once more, the following morning.
I yawned, tired of just laying around in bed all day and night. How I wanted to get out of there as soon as possible. One because I hated hospitals and I was bored. Two because Connor and Edward made being at a hospital an even worse experience than before.
Connor was beginning act jealous and over protective of me any time Carlisle or Edward walked into the room; example, that day early in the morning, after he checked into his ward he came in to say hello and Carlisle walked in followed by Edward, Connor gave them both a glare before exiting. That was a side of him I had never seen.
He suspects something going on with the Cullens. He hinted at it once or twice the day before, when everyone was out for lunch or dinner. He wanted to know what was going on.
I wasn’t so sure about the answer that I was going to give him when he did ask.
“Just a couple of more weeks and I’m sure you’re out of here, Bella.” Carlisle said and patted my arm. “Edward will come momentarily for his rounds.”
I sighed. It was Edward’s day to take his rounds in this ward again. I didn’t want to be with him alone again, not with what happened last time he was in the ward.
Carlisle chuckled and exited the room, without another word.
Minutes later Edward entered, “good morning.” He seemed awfully chipper.
I smiled vaguely and returned to reading the book Connor had dropped off in the morning before he stormed out of the room when Carlisle and Edward entered.
“I see you’re planning to ignore me with the book,” he noted and smiled.
I rolled my eyes, “not intentionally, Connor brought it in and I’m bored.” I said returning to the page I had left off.
“I see.” Edward said, “Alice sends her regards.” He said, he knew that would get my attention.
“Alice? Is she here?” I sat up.
“Emmett, Esme, Jasper and even Rose send their regards,” I noticed he failed to mention his fiancee. “And…” He trailed off, “she insisted on coming.”
“Who?” I asked, thinking he was talking about Melanie.
“Bella!” Alice stormed in the room, balloons and flowers in her tiny hands.
“Alice!” I gasped in surprise.
Alice jumped back a little hurt by my exclamation, “you’re not happy to see me?” She frowned.
I shook my head, “no it’s not that, I’m just surprised to see you here. I didn’t think I would ever see you again.” I said.
“Seriously? I will always find a way to see you, Bella!” She said and hugged me, managing to juggle the bouquet of flowers and ornaments and balloons in one hand. “Where do I put these…” she pondered to herself.
She flashed around the room in a quick motion, moments later the room had been decorated, Alice Style.
“There.” She sighed proudly to herself. “Now if you excuse me Edward, get out, I need to catch up with Bella.” She glared at him.
He rolled his eyes and exited out the door without another word at Alice or me.
I looked at Alice, “do you two hate each other now?” I asked her. She looked confused, “every time I’ve seen you two together since you left, you’re glaring at each other or something…” I explained.
Her face fell, “things haven’t been the same since we left Forks, Bella. Edward and I have sort of drifted since he returned home and Melanie fell in the picture.” Her eyes darkened. “No, I don’t like her.” She said looking at me, knowing the question I was going to ask.
“Why?” I asked.
She huffed, “she’s taken Edward from us. We can never be with Edward without her being there. It’s not like a cute type way, it’s more annoying. She’s everywhere. Edward can’t even do the things he likes anymore because of her, sure he plays the piano but only what she likes. He’s never around with us anymore because he’s always with her!” Alice slammed her hand on the mattress.
“Why don’t you tell her to back off, then.” I suggested, hating seeing like that.
She scoffed, “I’ve tried, but all she says is ‘Edward is mine, so he will do what I want him to do’.” She mocked her.
“Doesn’t Edward try to get away from her?”
“Tries but doesn’t succeed, she has him wrapped around her manipulative finger. He feels sorry for her, the pity eats him up, and he wants to be good to one girl at least, even if he doesn’t love her.” She looked at me, “he’s basically doing this for you.”
“For me?” I asked shocked.
“Yes. He feels since he has failed you, he needs to make it up to you by being someone’s toy, if he’s miserable, then it’s better for him to feel he is doing something right, for what he did to you.” She said.
“Makes no sense.” I said.
“Makes sense to Edward.” She said. “Anyway,” she said rather chipper, “enough of her” she spat, “tell me about you. Connor looks like he loves you, and that ring, wow!” She said. “He seems perfect.”
I laughed, “he has flaws, Alice.” I said, “no one is perfect.” I said, “but he sure tries to be, and he is great.”
“I saw you in my vision getting proposed to, I nearly cried.” She put her hand over her heart, “I hope you don’t mind me seeing.” She said.
“I don’t mind.” I said.
“Good, anyway, when I saw, I just had to thank you immediately. So I wrote you a letter, did you get it?”
“Letter?” I asked confused.
“Yeah.” She looked bewildered as well. “I sent it, I know I did.” Then her eyes turned black, “Melanie.” She pursed her lips. “She must’ve retrieved the letter. That jealous…” Alice didn’t continue her sentence.
There was that word again; jealous. I didn’t believe it, so I didn’t point it out to Alice.
“So what you meant by ‘congratulations on the engagement, though I think I already told you’, when I saw you in Seattle?” I asked.
“Yes. Why?” She looked at me in a peculiar way.
“I thought you meant --I-I.” I didn’t know how to begin, “Alice, I saw you at my Engagement Party. You and Edward.” I explained. “You congratulated me there.”
“What?” She asked shocked, “no, I didn’t Bella. I only sent you the letter.”
“Melanie.” We both said at the same time.
“Alice, why is she doing this to me?” I asked her, getting angry.
“Jealous. Edward told you already.” Alice snapped at me.
“I don’t believe it.” I said.
“It’s true.” Alice said, seeming proud of herself for some reason, “you’re the only thing that could potentially separate her and Edward. We could get Edward back because of you!” Alice exclaimed, her smile wide and eyes full of delight.
End Notes: What did you think of this chapter? Who else hates Melanie (I've gotten plenty of reviews saying how much they hate her)? lol.
