Chapter Notes: After what seems like an eternity away from this site, I have returned fresh and ready to write more. Apologies once more (I know, annoying) for not returning fast enough to finish this story. I have not forgotten about it, no worries about that. I’m incredibly determined to finish it, an no doubt I will considering all my stress has been overcome. High School stress and drama is in my past and I have about 3 months to worry about College, but in that time I will write more and more. I hope you are all not too mad at me for not coming to this story is months, but I’m hoping the wait will be worth it once I’m done with it. Now, onto the story. RECAP for those who may have forgotten what happened previously, Edward kissed Bella. Connor found Edward saying he loved Bella. End Recap. Haha.

Chapter 21: Rival
By: Eternitys_Charm

“Excited of finally being able to get out of here?” Carlisle asked me as he signed off my final paperwork.

I nodded excitedly, “very, I can’t stand being in hospitals.” I made a face. Carlisle laughed.

Edward came in to my room at that instant. It was Connor’s day to make his rounds in this section of the hospital, but Carlisle had informed me he did not show up today. Connor called in early in the morning, claiming her was sick with food poisoning.

“ I can call him if you want. I can remind him you’re being checked out today and if he still wants to come to pick you up,” Carlisle asked me hours before.

I nervously rejected his kind offer, “no, thank you, Carlisle, I don’t want to bother him if he’s feeling ill. I’ll call Jacob to come and pick me up.”

“Sounds good,” Carlisle nodded.

“Hello, again, Bella.” Edward greeted as he closed the door behind him, “Jacob is waiting for you downstairs.” He announced, “do I tell him to come up?”

“Yes, please, I need help with my things.” I told him.

“I’ll tell him, I need to go downstairs, anyway.” Carlisle volunteered and walked out of the room.

“Do you have everything packed?” Edward asked me, looking around the room to see if I had forgotten anything.

“Yes I do.” I said picking up a small suitcase in my hand that was filled with the essentials. Everything else was on the counters of the room; flowers, bears, balloons, cards, etc.

Edward cleared his throat, “listen, Bella, about what happened yesterday--”

“You regret doing it, I know, it’s okay, I understand.” I interjected.

He shook his head, “that’s not what I was going to say at all,” he told me.

“I’m apologizing for doing it, but I don’t regret it.” He looked at me, “what I did was out of line. I knew Connor was coming, but a part of me told me not to stop and let him find us. A part of me wanted to see him hurt and a part of me enjoyed seeing him that way.” He looked ashamed, “I’m apologizing for the trouble I have caused for you and Connor.”

“I also have to give you a warning, and please keep this in mind.” I listened closely, “Melanie found out about this as I was confirming Alice’s vision,” he rolled his eyes, “please be careful. She was very angry when she found out.”

My eyes grew, “she’ll come after me?”

“She’ll try, but have Jacob or someone of the pack at your side.”

“Edward, how can I tell apart Melanie’s powers to real life, I’m sure there has to be something that can give away her powers.”

“Concentration and synchronization are her two biggest faults in using her powers.”

“What do you mean?”

He smiled in amazement, as if remembering something she did, “she gets distracted easily, so at times her power fails her as in it either vanishes or just freezes -- concentration. When she’s using her powers she sometimes can’t combine the movements of the lips to the sound coming out in perfect sync, or when someone speaks to her ‘hallucination’ it may have a later reaction time.” He looked at me, “understand?”

“Yes.” I nodded.

“Be careful.” He said.

“I will, I have Jake.” I said, and as if he knew it was his cue, Jacob walked into the hospital room with a great smile on his face.

“Bella! You’re finally being released!” He said and came over to give me his famously great hugs. “Need me to carry this stuff down for you?” He asked me.

“Please?” I asked, with pleading eyes.

“Of course, ma’am.” Jacob said and managed to balance all the vases in one hand and bears, balloons, cards, and candies in the other. “Ready.” He beamed.

“Let’s go, then.” I said. Edward helped me on the wheelchair he and Carlisle forced me into agreeing to take. “I’ll see you around, Edward.”

“Yes, I’m sure you will. Goodbye Bella, stay out of trouble.”

“Bye, leech,” Jacob said almost jokingly.

“Goodbye, dog.” Edward said with a sly smile and exited out the door.

A nurse came in soon after and pushed my wheelchair out the door. When we reached the first floor I was lucky enough to encounter Carlisle.

“Goodbye Miss Swan, take care.” He acted professionally.

“Goodbye Dr. Cullen, thank you so much for everything.” I said, “goodbye, Carlisle, I hope to see you soon,” I muttered to low for any human to hear. I’m sure Carlisle heard, though, he nodded and smiled.

Jacob placed me inside his car and all my things in the back of it. He got into the driver’s seat and drove away from the hospital. I was so glad to be finally removed from that place.

“So, do you mind explaining to me why Connor is not here to pick you up?” He asked me, “he wasn’t in the hospital, either. I checked with one of his friends.”

I closed my eyes and wished Jacob would just let the subject go. He didn’t. He looked at me intently for a few short seconds until he returned his eyes to the road.

I sighed, not waning to tell him what was, “something happened last night, Jacob.”

“Explain,” he kept his voice leveled.

I didn’t know how to put it, so the words just slurred out, “Edward kissed me and I kissed him back, then Edward told me he loved me and that’s when Connor came in, hearing Edward confess his love for me. Connor got mad and kicked Edward out of the room then he was furious with me and nearly called off the wedding but he didn’t, he just said it was postponed. Then he left without another word to me.”

Jacob was silent for a few moments. “Ahhh,” he grumbled, “Bella, how could you?!” even though it was an accusation, his voice maintained calm, “with the leech?! I thought you were over that guy.” He muttered.

“Yeah.” Was all I said.

“Do you still love him?” He asked me.

“I don’t know.” I lied.

He didn’t believe me, “you do, don’t you?”

I didn’t answer, I just stared outside of the window as the rain poured down hard. I couldn’t avoid talking to him, the drive was about two hours, he was going to bring it up soon again, anyway. Might as well confess. “Unfortunately my feelings for Edward Cullen have not yet faded completely.” I admitted.

Jacob stayed silent for a few minutes, “so now what? You’re leaving Connor?”

“I never said that!” It was my turn to be insulted, “I love Connor, Jacob. This is just a major hurdle in our relationship, one I wish we can be able to overcome.”

“You still want to be with him?”

“Good.” Jacob was pleased that Edward had not interfered with Connor and me -- yet.

“You’re not mad that I kissed, Edward?” I asked in shock. I was certain he would have yelled at me, scolded me, had to pull over until her was relaxed. His reaction was nothing how I imagined. He maintained with great composure, as if I had just told him a boring story.

“I’m a little upset, but I’ve grown immune to anything that leech can do now.” He said. “To be honest, I’m not worried about him at all. Yeah you loved him, but I doubt you’ll be stupid enough to return to him after what he did. After all, you have Connor now--a man that has shown you no bounds to what love can do.” He said and with that he closed the subject.

The ride back home was calm and relaxed. I took in the scene of the trees and the rain falling, missing seeing the outside after being in the hospital for such a long time.

Along the way I dozed off, Jacob shook me gently. “Bella, wake up, we’re back at your house.” He said. I sluggishly opened my eyes.

Jacob laughed and carried me out the car like a little baby. He easily opened my front door and gently laid me on the couch. “I’ll get your things.” He said and exited out into the rain.

I looked around, still half asleep. Someone had cleaned the entire house spotless. Angela had moved out so I doubted she would come over here to clean. There was a small note on the coffee table, I reached over and grabbed it.

“Bella,” it said, in perfect handwriting, “I hope it wasn’t too much of an intrusion to come into your home and tidy up. After all, dust had been collecting here with you being gone for a while. Welcome home, and I’ll keep a look out on you. Love Alice.”

Look out? For what? I wondered. Melanie, most likely.

Jacob returned, juggling all of my belongings in his hands. He laid them on top of the dining table. “Welcome home,” he beamed. His smile faded for split second as he closed his eyes and pinched the bridge of his nose.

“What’s wrong.” I looked at him.

“It always hurts me when they come near me,” he shook his head and almost smiled.

“What are you talking about?” I asked, slightly relieved.

There was a knock at the door, “Alice is here.” He said.

Jacob had grown close to Alice in the past weeks that I’ve been at the hospital. Seeing as how he was now mature and an adult, I wasn’t surprised to see his petty fights with the Cullens fade. Him and the Cullen’s weren’t exactly best friends, considering they were mortal enemies, but they began to connect in ways I never thought they would. Through me it seemed like they managed to get that close. Each of their genuine worry for me surpassed the feelings of anger they had for each other, seeing the good in them.

He walked towards the door and opened it, letting in the cold breeze seep in.

“I’m sorry for bursting in like this so soon as to your arrival, Bella,” Alice walked in, “but I don’t have the greatest news.”

My smile of seeing her faded, “what do you mean, Alice?”

“It’s Melanie. She found out that you and Edward kissed and she’s going insane, plotting revenge on you. She now she’s you as a rival when before she saw you as an insignificant human of Edward’s past. Now as she sees you are not just a phase in Edward’s history she won’t stop until she sees you suffer. She’s an extremely jealous person, if you have not noticed by now.” As she explained this my heart pounded inside of my rib cage. “Bella, there is no telling of what she can do to you. I came here to warn you. I will keep a look out as to see her moves but for now she’s just plotting.”

She turned to Jacob, “I’m asking you please not to leave her side, for anything. Melanie is dangerous, she may not look it but she is. Her power gives her an edge, please be careful.”

“I can’t stay with her forever, Alice,” he said.

“I know you can’t,” Alice said nodding her head, “I’m not asking you to stay with her the entire time. Just as long as you can, when you have other things to do just call me and either me or the rest of my family will watch over. We’ll be watching over Charlie, Connor, and your closest friends as well.”

I gasped, “do you think she’ll go after them?”

“It’s the easiest way to hurt you without actually harming you physically,” Alice advised. “We’ll protect you from her, as long as it’s necessary. I hope the anger she has blows over.”

“I know what her powers can do,” Jacob said, “are you sure you can keep an eye on her?”

“I can.” Alice nodded.

“It still wouldn’t hurt to get more people involved into protecting Bella. I’ll let the pack know as well.” Jacob walked towards the back door, I knew he would contact any of the wolf pack members by telepathy.

“What exactly is she planning right now?” I asked Alice, worried.

Alice shrugged, “her plans right now aren’t very well thought out, they will never be executed well. She’s so far trying to plan a way to kill you without me or any of the rest of the family and your wolf buddies finding out.” Alice’s smile grew, “she’s so pathetic.”

“If you think that, then why the warning?”

“Like I said, she’s dangerous and her powers are very manipulative, if she comes to a concrete plan, it could mean disaster.”

I sighed, “there’s always someone that’s out to kill me.”

End Notes: Filler, I know. Don't worry the action starts right after this. Promise to update sooner. :] I'm on vacation now, all I WANT to do is write.

Question: What do you think Melanie will do once she comes up with a well enough plan?
