Chapter 8: Congratulations
Everyone soon began to enter through the door, once Charlie was done with his sauce and started grilling the barbeque.
I began to get nervous at the sight of so many people in the house and backyard. I thought telling my mother and father was hard, now I had to announce it to the rest of my family and friends at once. I bit my lip and Connor noticed how nervous I was and smiled.
"Come here," he said wrapping his arms around me, "don't worry, Bella. You're getting nervous for nothing," he assured, "everyone will be happy, and I'll be there to help you if you get stuck." He stopped to think, "how about we say it together?"
I looked up at him and nodded excitedly, that way it didn't just have to be me saying it. "I'd like that very much. I get nervous with big news like this." I whispered.
He smiled and kissed my forehead, "it's almost time, too. I think everyone's almost here, just your friends Jessica and Mike aren't here, yet." Connor said looking around the room.
I did the same, from what I could see everyone that I was close to was here, except for my mother and Connor's family. Charlie and Billy were chatting in the patio and grilling. In our backyard there were at least ten men playing football, no doubt the werewolf pack. Inside in the kitchen was Angela with Ben looking at the food there was on the counter. Jasmine and Jacob sat at the table with two of my work buddies playing cards. On the couch was Sue, Leah, and Emily chatting. Sitting on the floor, in front of the television, was two of Connor's work friends and another one of my college friends.
The doorbell rang and I went over to open it, "Hi, Bella!" A chipper voice greeted me. I invited Jessica and Mike inside, "I brought cookies," Jessica announced, "I was going to make some but Mike kind of burned them, so instead I bought them." She giggled.
I smiled, "thanks, I'll go put them in the kitchen." I told her grabbing the big basket of cookies, "Hi Mike," I said as he walked into the house.
"How's it going, Bella?" He asked giving me a one-sided hug.
"Pretty good." I said, "you wanna play some football with the guys outside?" I asked him signaling the massive men outside chasing and tackling in each other.
Mike's eyes widened and he shook his head, "no thanks, I've learned my lesson." He said laughing. I laughed at the thought of how bad the pack men had picked on him while they were playing football, "they're torture."
Connor and Jessica laughed. "Come on, Mike. I'll join you." Connor offered.
"You're on your own there, Connor," Mike said still shaking his head once more.
Connor laughed. "Okay, little girl," he teased.
Mike laughed, "yeah all right, later, then. I'm starving first, though." Mike said rubbing his tummy.
Just then, Charlie announced that the food was done and the tables were set in the backyard.
Everyone in the house got up and left for the backyard ready to eat. I exited with Connor when everyone else had filed out. I gaped at the massive amounts of food outside and knew it was only necessary with all the massive pack men.
I was glad to see that it wasn't raining that night, the sky was bright and starry. A slight breeze made the night bearable to go on without a sweater.
Charlie reserved two seats at the head of the long table for Connor and me. Connor pulled out the folding chair for me and I sat down.
Everyone began to serve themselves food from the now immense buffet-like table, since everyone who was invited brought something to eat, the table was filled with food.
Jacob, who was sitting to my immediate left, had grabbed himself a huge plate stacked of pretty much everything on the table. I saw Jasmine gape at him, compared to his plate her plate of food looked like it was to feed a small mouse.
"I'm very hungry," Jacob explained, mouth full of food, to both us girls just staring at him. Jasmine and I laughed.
From what I could tell each pack member had gotten about as much food as Jacob had, excluding Leah.
Connor returned with his and my plate of food of perfectly portioned food and we began to eat. Everyone around the table began to talk comfortably to each other.
Nearly an hour later everyone was done with their food -- it was time to make our announcement.
Charlie nodded at me from across the table and went inside to get his camera, which he had been charging all afternoon for this moment.
I looked at Connor, he looked completely at ease talking to Angela and Ben next to him, unlike me who couldn't even hold the conversation Mike was having with me anymore.
Charlie came out of the house and cued me. I nodded and stood up, Connor did the same holding my hand in his. Everyone stopped talking when they saw us stand, staring; which made me, at this moment, even more nervous.
Connor tried to relax me by running his fingers against my palm, it comforted somewhat but not enough to stop the anxiety in me.
I cleared my throat, trying to find my voice. This was the third time today I was going to announce my engagement to Connor.
My stomach felt like it had butterflies in it and my throat seemed to have knots, but I somehow managed to find my voice, "thank you everyone for coming today, I know most of you were wondering why we invited you on such short notice, but Connor and I have something to announce." I began.
I looked up at Connor, he nodded and we both practically screamed, "we're engaged!"
Everyone in the table either stood up and raced towards or just yelled their congrats and cheers from their seats.
Jacob was the first to congratulate me from the group, he picked me up like a small child, "I'm so happy for you, Bells!" He ruffled my hair once he set me on the ground. "You're finally getting married!"
Jasmine then came to hug me, "I knew you two would get engaged soon," she yelled from all the commotion, her smile was genuine, "it was only a matter of time, and I'm very glad."
"Thank you!" I said to them both.
Then Jessica, Mike, Ben, and Angela made it through next all four of them practically in hysterics. "Bella!" Angela exclaimed being the first to hug me, "I can‘t believe it! You‘re finally getting married! I‘m excited for you!"
"Congratulations, Bella!" Jessica said then grabbed my hand and assessed the ring, "woah! That's a big rock!" She gaped still mesmerized by the size of the diamond in the center of the ring.
Mike and Ben pushed themselves through and both hugged my at the same time between them. "I'm very happy for you Bella!" Mike stated with a smile.
"Me, too." Ben said and went back to Angela.
I smiled at them both, then I was then pounced by the massive men and the rest of my friends and family. I could see Connor was getting trampled by our excited guests as much as I was.
"He's a great catch," Billy said wheeling in with his son, "I'm extremely happy for you, Bella, you deserve nothing but the best."
I bent down to hug Billy and once again his son, Jacob.
Once everyone had calmed a bit down, Charlie offered a toast. "To Connor and Bella!"
Everyone chimed in and gulped down their wine.
"Congratulations, Bella." I heard a small lovely voice chime in through the shouts. I looked around to find the source of the voice.
What I saw made me lose my balance. To my left, on the other side of the yard was a small pale and black haired girl, jumping happily. Alice. I thought and held on to Connor trying not to fall to the floor.Standing behind her was a tall somber-faced and bronze haired boy.
His sight made the air get knocked out of me. I couldn't breathe as I stared at him, his angelic but cold face. His mouth was pursed into a fine line and his eyebrows furrowed in frustration. His expression was almost angry, but it was as if he was trying to hold it back. I didn't dare stare into the eyes I had once ached to just get a glimpse of, it would cause me more pain then I was having right now.
My heart pounded painfully in my chest and my head began to spin. My body began to shiver slightly and I could feel Connor's arm in my hand, it felt warm under my cold and moist hand.
I stared at both of them for seconds that seemed to last hours.
Connor shook my hand, "Bella are you okay?" He asked. I immediately turned to him.
"Yeah," I tried to smile, but my lips shook, "yes, just tired." I lied.
I looked back but they were gone, had it just been a hallucination or was it really them? I worried.
"You scared me," Connor said, moving me out of the immense crowd who now had began to talk amongst themselves. "You completely froze, Bella. You turned really pale," he placed the back of his hand on my forehead, feeling my temperature.
He was getting into ‘medical mode', as I called it. "What happened?" He asked sitting me down.
"I'm fine, now, I promise" I said though my heart pounded a thousand times per minute.
Connor checked my pulse, inconspicuously to everyone. "Bella, your heart is racing; 119." He said really starting to get worried now.
"I'm just sleepy, Connor, that's all." I tried to explain. "I hardly slept last night because of all the excitement."
He shook his head, "sleepiness causes your heart to slow because your body is trying to relax and sleep, Bella, it doesn't cause it to speed up."
"Okay, you got me, Doctor Connor Mitchell," I said, "the excitement got to me and for a second or two I got really agitated because of it and I felt sick and shaky," I lied.
He nodded, "that makes more sense, too much anxiety and, as you explained, plus with the no sleep it could cause your body to slightly ‘give up'. Explains your paled face, racing heart beat, and the perspiration beginning to form on your forehead." He looked at me again, maybe assessing I was looking a little better.
"I promise I feel better, Connor, I was just having a little meltdown from all this excitement," I said caressing his cheek.
"Happens a lot for newly engaged women," he smiled, "just sit down and stay calm, okay?" He kissed my cheek.
I nodded to him, try to relax, Bella.
Everyone began to leave past ten o' clock, after a game of football between the men and a talk between all the woman about how Connor had proposed to me.
Connor and I helped Charlie clean up the mess that was left over because of the party.
While washing the dishes I couldn't help but stare at the place I had seem them. Alice had congratulated me with a bright smile and cheerful persona but his stance and face said the opposite. His expression was none at all, grave. His hands were clenched in a fist and his arms flexed, his posture told me he was angry. At what, I wasn't sure.
I didn't understand if what I saw was real or not, but it left me confused.End Notes: What do you think, real or not? What do you think of this chapter??
