It was a beautiful evening in La Push. The sun was just above the horizon, creating a marvelous sunset. In a little clearing in the outskirts of the forest, Leah and Sam stood talking.

Leah turned.

"What?!?!" she said. "You love me for four years, and then as soon as Emily comes, I’m not as good anymore? We were going to be married, but now you throw it away? Well, then, fine!" she threw her engagement ring at Sam, but it missed, and landed among the trees in the forest. And there it would probably stay for many, many years. Tears started streaming down her face. Sam started forward.

"Leah, honey, I-"

"Don’t talk to me! You made it clear you don’t want me, so fine! I’m gone!" Leah was shaking with anger. She felt like she was going to explode. Then, inexplicably, she did explode. "What...?" she tried to say, but all that came out was a whimper. Then Sam exploded too. In his place was a gigantic black wolf.

" Leah... it’s okay. You’re a werewolf. You’ve just phased. It’s okay... Just calm d-" Sam managed to think before Leah had phased back and was running as fast as she could away from him. The fastest phase back he’d ever seen.

"I hate you!..." she screamed and the phrase seemed to echo in Sam’s brain a thousand times. He phased back, sat down on a stump, and thought about how out of control his life had gone. Four days previously, he had been happily in love, ready to be married in August. Leah had invited her cousin, Emily, over to tell her the great news. That’s when everything started going wrong. As soon as Sam saw Emily, he knew. Leah just couldn’t compare. He imprinted. He’d been afraid of it ever since he turned into a werewolf. And now... Leah was a werewolf too. He wondered briefly if Seth had changed too, but was swept away by the enormous amount of grief running through him.

He got up, and started home, where he would meet Emily, who would try to comfort him, but would only succeed in making him feel guilty.

As he walked in the door, Emily came up to him. She gave him a hug, and whispered that she was sorry. Emily went to bed in the guest room while Sam flopped down on his bed and fell into a sleep full of frightful nightmares.

Leah sprinted away from him. She screamed at him that she hated him to show him how much she resented this. She loved him for four years, and now it was all over. She realized what must have happened. Since the stories about the werewolves were true, then the rest must be true too. Even the one about imprinting. Why... why couldn’t this have worked out?

She stormed through the door to her house. Her mom was on top of her at once.

"Honey, what’s wrong? Are you okay?"

"Go away Mom!" Leah shouted as she stormed up the stairs. She lay down on her bed and sobbed her heart out. If only she hadn’t invited Emily down! At least it was better than him dumping her at the wedding. The wedding! Something that was history now! She couldn’t tell her mom. Her mom would figure it out eventually- all she had to do was look at her hand and notice the ring was gone, gone forever. She felt like she was going to die. She was never going to phase back into the one thing that had ruined her life. With that last thought, she drifted off into an uneasy sleep.

The next morning she woke up with a severe headache. She stood unsteadily in front of her mirror and stared. Her usually sleek and shiny hair was a birds nest. Her eyes were red and puffy, and her clothes were crumpled horribly. She put up her hair and put on some neutral make-up to make herself look more natural. She changed into new clothes and took a deep breath. She couldn’t let on how upset she was feeling- her mother would ask enough questions as it was. She took another deep breath and headed down to breakfast.

As predicted, she was bombarded with questions and comments as soon as she walked through the doorway.

"Oh, there you are, honey! We were starting to worry! Are you okay? What happened? Where were you? Are you feeling alright?..." came from her mom.

"Wow, you were really mad last night! But guess what! Something really exciting happened last night! Guess what!" was the chatter from Seth.

"Okay! I’ll answer your questions, but one at a time. Mom, I’m fine, I had a bit of bad news, I was talking in the woods, and again, I’m fine. Seth, I just answered where I was and I don’t know. What happened?" Like I care... she thought. She had totally avoided the actual meaning of the questions for now, but she didn’t know if they would let her get around them. Seth’s news was probably some junk about him beating a video game.

"Well, there I was, playing a video game," What did I say? thought Leah. "when I got a phone call. It was just some guy from school, doesn’t really matter. He started making fun of dad, even though he’s... dead... Well, I got really annoyed and I felt like I was gonna explode! And then, I did! I exploded into a giant-"

"-Werewolf?" Leah cut in.

"Well, umm... yeah. How did you know?" Seth said, looking disconcerted.

"Because so did I."

"You did?!" he exclaimed. "Woah!"

"Is that what’s bothering you, honey?" put in her mom.

"Umm... kind of, I guess."

"Well, what was the rest?"

"Sam!" Leah burst out. "We’re not getting married!"

"What?" gasped her mom. "Why ever not?"

"I don’t know! Because! Shut up! I don’t want to talk a bout it!" Leah screamed, tears forming in her eyes. She blinked furiously to stop them. "Just shut up!" Even Seth was quiet after this little outburst.

"I’m sorry..." her mom whispered

"I’m going for a walk," said Leah, and walked out the door, leaving Sue and Seth sitting like statues with horror-struck expressions.

Sam woke up to the smell of Emily’s cooking. At the thought of Emily, he felt a twinge of guilt. He got up and started towards the kitchen.

As he walked through the doorway of the kitchen, the first thing he saw was Emily. Guilty or not, he knew Emily was the one for him. She just completed him. He would do anything to make her happy. She looked up from her cooking as soon as he walked through the doors.

"Oh, Sam, I’m so sorry! Did she not take it well?"

"It’s not your fault, darling. She took it just as well as would be expected. The worst thing was that when she got mad at me she exploded- into a werewolf. While I was trying to explain it to her, she phased back. It was one of the fastest phases back I’ve ever seen! The next council meeting will be tomorrow and Leah’ll have to go. It’s gonna be horrible..."

"Oh, Sam..." she gave him a hug and he buried his face in her hair. They stayed in that position for a while, but then Sam sighed.

"I have to go on patrol... I hope Leah hasn’t phased, but I doubt it. I’ll come back for lunch. I’m also going to bed early tonight. I’ll need my energy for tomorrow’s council meeting. Do you wanna watch a movie after lunch?"

"Sure! I’ll pick up a movie after I finish the dishes. Have fun on patrol..." Sam gave her a small smile, pecked her on the cheek, and walked out the door.
