“When will you be back?” I asked while tears ran down my cheeks.
“I’ll be back as soon as I can, Love. Just as soon as we take care of this pack of newborns in Alaska.” Edward was racing around his room packing his clothes. “Trust me, I’ll be back before it’s time for our wedding. I wouldn’t miss that for the world.”
I gasped and said, “but the weddings four months away! You won’t be back before then? I won’t see you for four months?!” He came over and sat next to me on the bed, taking one of my hands.
“I don’t know, Love. Alice can’t see anything. But, I promise, I will be back,” he said looking into my eyes.
I sighed, “okay.” Edward put his arms around me and kissed my hair.
We stayed like that for a minute before Emmett called up the stairs, “Edward, time to go dude.”
Edward sighed and got up off the bed picking up his bag. He took my hand again and we started down the stairs. When we reached the driveway he put his bag in the trunk of his Volvo and came back over to me. He took my face and his hands and kissed my lips softly. “I love you. And I will miss you my Bella.”
“Yeah,” I sighed. “Me too.”
He gave me a tight hug and then got in his car. Tears were running down my face as I sobbed noisily. He and the rest of the family started driving down the long driveway. Just before his car was out of sight, Edward turned back to face me and waved. I waved back and wiped a tear form my cheeks as he slowly left my sight.
I don’t know how long I stood there, but when I realized that the sun had set I walked on shaky legs back to the front door and locked it. I got in my rusty old truck and drove home. The entire ride home I cried. The whole in my chest flared as I thought about the last time he left. But he had come back. And I was sure he would come back again.
FOUR MONTHS LATER.
I cried and cried and cried. Today was supposed to be my wedding day. But it wasn’t. He promised that he’d be back before this. He promised!
I had waited up all night hoping that he would come through my bedroom window. He never did.
Four months. Four Goddamn months. And not one word. No call. No letter. Nothing.
I sat on my bed and cried for what seemed like forever. I eventually got up and went to my closet. I pulled out the long white garment bag. I unzipped it and put on the beautiful dress Alice had gotten me even before I knew Edward and I were getting married.
I went back and sat in my rocking chair. The chair that Edward had sat in numerous times while watching me sleep. I eventually got tearstains on my dress and had to take it off. I put on jeans and a T-shirt.
I went downstairs and sat at the table in the kitchen. Charlie was at the stove making something that smelled terrible.
“Good morning Kiddo! Pretty day outside huh? Yup! It sure is a nice one.” I stared at him in shock. He knew very well what day today was and he knew that I was suffering.
He continued to grin at me while I sat there in shock. Charlie let out a sigh and came to sit down next to me. He took one of my hands but I yanked it away. “Look, Bella, I know that you wish he would come back but-”
I cut him off. “Think?! No dad I know he’s coming back.”
“Bella, honey, you’re in denial.”
I stood up and knocked my chair over “What?!? What did you just say?” I screamed.
“I-” he started.
“No he’s coming back,” tears were streaking down my face again. “He promised!” I went over to the counter and grabbed my car keys. I ran out the front door and slammed it as I went to my truck.
I didn’t know where I was going. But I sure as hell knew one thing; I didn’t care what anybody else said.
He was coming back.
EIGHT MONTHS LATER.
I was in Jacob’s garage sitting on the roof of his car as he worked. He had come back when he heard that the Cullen’s had left for a while. He told me he thought he still had a chance with me. I told him that I was happy with my decisions to marry Edward, and to my surprise he said he was ok with that. He said he just wanted me to be happy.
After my fight with Charlie I had come here. Jacob hugged me and told me he was there for me. I had spent most of my time the last eight months here, with him.
I sat on the roof of his truck and he stopped working when he saw me crying. I was starting to lose faith. I knew that Edward loved me but it had been a year. Why hadn’t he come back yet?
Jacob sighed and came to sit next to me. “Bella?” he said.
I looked up at him and he continued. “Bells, you know it’s been a year. Are you okay?”
“Does it look like I’m okay Jacob?” I snapped at him. He held his ground.
“Bella, you know I just want what’s best for you. And, honestly I don’t think it’s healthy for you to sit around wallowing in self pity.” He sighed. “Maybe you should move on,” he said softly.
I knew in some ways he was right. It had been a year. But, I knew I still loved him with all my heart and being.
“You’re right Jacob. I do need to move on.”
“Yeah?” he asked.
“Yeah, I’m leaving.”
“I have to get away. I don’t know where I’m going but I’m leaving.”
“Um…okay Bells. If you think that’s best.”
“Yeah, I do. Goodbye Jacob,” I said as I stood up.
“Bye Bella. I love you”
As I walked away I realized how much I would miss him. He was my best friend. But, I knew I couldn’t live like this.I had to find Edward. Weather he still loved me or not.
