Bella's POV

It didn't take as long as I had expected to find the entrance to the cavern where the humans were hiding; there were quite a lot of them. At least thirty, anyway. It was just after sunset when we silently entered the cavern, letting Jake phase back and get dressed before going in. The entrance was hidden, yet in plain sight.

Cunning.

We entered the system of tunnels and followed the sound of human voices through the tunnels; the scents were no good, as they led every direction. Instead we followed the sound of their voices.

When we entered the largest cavern, which smelt like food, sweat and dirt, we paused in the doorway. All conversation had stopped when we appeared, and they all looked cautious, hostile. They probably thought we were Seekers...

Carlisle held up his hands in a gesture of peace. A grizzled, bearded man stood with a rifle pointed at us, another, younger man just behind him with a Glock.

"Who're you?" the first man asked suspiciously. "Whaddya want?"

"My name is Doctor Carlisle Cullen," Carlisle replied calmly, as if he didn't have a gun pointed at his face. Not that it would do any damage. He spoke gently, but loud enough for all to hear. "This is my wife, Esme, and our adopted children; Emmett, Rosalie, Alice, Jasper, Edward, Bella, Renesme and Jacob," he continued, introducing us all. "We were curious to see how humans could be surviving so long after the souls came in such a large number. It's been a while since we saw any real humans."

As Carlisle was talking, I noticed a large, dark-haired man shift his weight to hide a small, golden-haired, silver-skinned girl. His manner was protective, and I could tell he was tense. I decided to add my bit to Carlisle's.

"We're no Seekers, and they definitely couldn't have followed us," I said gently, pulling a small flashlight out of my jeans pocket. I turned it on my eye, knowing the golden tone would probably shock them a little. At least they wouldn't try to attack us now, though. The spokesperson stared for a moment before lowering his rifle.

"Well now...it seems like we got us some new additions, folks." He chuckled. "The name's Jeb," he told us. "Let me introduce you to my - extended - family."

As we moved among the humans, I noticed Edward getting more and more tense, his eyes narrowing.

"Something wrong?" I asked softly, taking his hand. He nodded minutely.

"Yes," he growled, his voice too low for humans to hear. "Perhaps I should make it clear you are my wife," he muttered. I smiled.

"Too many single males?" I asked just as quietly, as he wrapped his arm around my waist possessively. I can't say I minded...I loved him too much.

"Far too many," he replied, putting his other arm around my waist as we stopped and Jeb started to name the people in his 'family'.

"This here's my niece, Melanie, and her partner Jared...this is my nephew Jamie, and this is Ian...Kyle...Trudy...Brandt..." he continued to name the humans there, but I noticed he left out two women, one of which was the girl I had noticed Ian protecting and hiding earlier. He was still wary of us, blocking our view of her. I guessed from the scent she was a soul. Jeb paused after introducing all the humans there and cleared his throat, looking meaningfully at Ian.

"Now don't freak out," he warned us, stroking the gun at his side. "Wanda's been through a lot for us, so don't get too antsy." I nodded instantly, and the rest of my family did too. With a sigh, Ian moved aside and let us see the soul named Wanda clearly.

The atmosphere in the cavern was noticably tense, until Renesme held out her hand to shake Wanda's gently.

"I'm Renesme, but most of my family call me Nessie," she told the wide-eyed soul. Wanda took her hand, shook it once, and then retreated to Ian's protective embrace.

"Wanderer," she told us. Her voice was quite highpitched. "But Jeb came up with Wanda, so that's what they call me here. It's nice to meet you," she added, and Renesme smiled slightly, not enough to scare the humans, as Jake caught her by the waist and rested his chin on top of her head.

The whole room was rather relaxed now, most likely due to Jasper, and the man Jeb had called Doc stood and approached.

"Carlisle, right?" he asked. Carlisle nodded. "You are a doctor?" He sounded a little desperate, and tired.

"I have been for quite a while," Carlisle confirmed. Doc was visibly relieved.

"That's great! Um...would I be able to talk to you later? We need another doctor around here." Carlisle nodded again.

"Of course. I'd be glad to help." Carlisle shook Doc's hand carefully before turning back to Jeb. "Sorry if we interrupted your meal...please, continue as if we are not here. We can wait as long as is needed."

"Don't you want something to eat?" Jamie piped up. He looked a little gangly and uncoordinated; a teenager in the middle of a growth spurt. I had to smile.

"No, we're fine...except maybe Jake," I added with a light laugh as Jacob's stomach audibly growled. He laughed sheepishly.

"Jacob's always hungry," Edward teased. It lightened my non-beating heart to know they got along now.

"Am not," Jake replied, grimacing. Renesme giggled.

"Yes you are," she agreed. "You don't stop eating...or growing!" Jake shrugged but didn't protest as the woman named Trudy heaped up a bowl with food and passed it to him. He was still totally unable to resist my daughter. Jeb pushed Jacob towards a seat, and with Renesme sitting beside him he started to eat.

I lounged against the wall beside Edward as Emmett started whispering to Rosalie, his arms around her waist. Alice smiled at me quickly from where she stood under Jasper's arm, and I could almost feel the disappointment in the room as they realised none of us were single.

Slowly conversation started up again.
