As I had expected, a shot rang out. I saw the bullets coming towards me, and knew that moving would creep them out more than if the slugs flattened against my forehead...which they did.

"Calm down, please," Carlisle said calmly. "We won't hurt you. If we wanted to kill you, we already would have done so. I have been a doctor for centuries, and I have not tasted human blood apart from when I was changing Edward, Esme, Rosalie and Emmett. Rosalie hasn't tasted human blood at all, and neither has Bella. Even the first day after being changed, she had the self-control to stop hunting humans before she hurt them."

"What about the rest of ya?" Jeb snarled, and I could see he was terrified.

"True, we have had our bad times, but that was over fifty years ago," Edward assured them. "Bella's blood, while she was human, was the most potent I had ever smelt. But I managed to not hurt her...not physically, anyway," he added, as we both winced again. "Jasper and Alice were created by others, but joined us and haven't tasted human blood since. I know better than any other in my family whether they have or not," he added. I took his hand and squeezed it gently. No need to scare them more.

"We won't harm any of you," Jasper said gently, and I was glad the humans couldn't see the scars on his neck and jaw. It would difficult for him to calm them down as he was doing now, slowly and subtly, if they could see his war-trophies.

"That Bella was alive to marry Edward and carry Renesme is proof enough of that," Esme added, smiling at me tenderly. She was so like a mother...I smiled back.

"Too true. You could have killed me in an instant, and I wouldn't have even noticed you coming," I said calmly. Then I settled back as Jacob began to speak.

"I'm not a vampire; I was completely human until about five months after Edward left Bella. It turns out the Quileute legends of the Spirit Wolves and the Cold Ones are completely true...in most cases. The Cullens being vegetarians, as it were, the pack had a truce with them. I am one of the descendents of the first Spirit Wolf, and so were all my pack-brothers...and Leah. She was a weird one...Girls aren't meant to be wolves. It was supposed to be men only...but there was nothing normal about my pack. I can shape-shift into a wolf at will; it's a genetic quirk. It's not contagious," he assured the humans. Renesme stood calmly with a small smile.

"May I show one of you my life so far? I have a special way of doing things," she added cheerfully. She touched my cheek gently and replayed the last few seconds. "That's all it is. I've been able to do this since I was born."

"It doesn't hurt, or do any harm at all," Carlisle said calmly, before smiling. "I should know; I'm a doctor."

Amazingly, Wanda was the one to step forward. I wasn't sure if Renesme could show souls the way she showed us, but it was worth a try. Ian hovered protectively behind Wanda, and the small young woman smiled at Renesme.

"You can show me if you like. I believe you."

While Renesme was showing Wanda her life, I was looking around the room. Everyone was tense, except Wanda and Jamie.

"Jasper, they're going to do something stupid if they don't calm down," I heard Alice whisper, and saw him nod out of the corner of my eye.

"I'm doing my best, but they're so wound up...Ian is worried for Wanda, and it's so strong..." Alice wrapped her arms around his waist, and I looked away, to Edward. He was concentrating on Renesme and Wanda.

"Can you hear her?" I asked. He knew who I meant.

"Yes...it's strange. Her thoughts are mostly human, but there's always a little bit that doesn't react the way a human does. She's used to having memories go through her mind; this is her tenth life."

"That would be why she is known as Wanderer," I mused, then my attention darted back to Renesme and the soul. Both of them had their eyes open, and they were smiling. Then Wanda giggled.

"Did she really used to bite you, Jacob?" she asked as Ian's arm wrapped around her waist protectively and Renesme returned to Jacob's side.

"Yep. Only when me 'n Rosalie didn't get her fed fast enough, though. It's a good thing she's not venomous...that would have sucked big time." He winced slightly as every human face again became hostile. Except, funnily enough, for Doc's. Wanda was calm, as I had expected. She was strong for one of her kind.

"We are nothing like what Hollywood protrayed," Carlisle explained. "We are extremely strong and fast, and our skin is harder than diamonds. Our skin is like ice to humans, and we're physically attractive to our intended prey. Being animal-hunters, our looks aren't exactly necessary. Our voices and smell are pleasant. The venom is not really necessary - if we're that close our prey will not escape..."

"Except for you," Esme said softly. I nodded agreement. I'd also escaped the fire caused by venom...once. Thanks to Edward.

"Bella, would you like to continue?" Carlisle asked me. I shook my head.

"No. I'm fairly sure there are a few more questions."
