20. The Werewolves

Rating 5/5   Word Count 1494   Review this Chapter

I heard footsteps behind me immediately, but I didn’t let them catch up. I couldn’t let them. Jacob’s life hung in the balance. I couldn’t let him die because of two worthless demons. But even as I thought that, I doubted that I would make it in time. My vision took about thirty seconds. Just thirty seconds. If I was even a minute late he would die. That was not a chance that I was going to take.

I could feel my body tiring out, not wanting to go on. I did some pretty hard running in an attempt to get away. And now I was tired and my legs didn’t want to move any longer. But just as soon as I started to loose hope, the putrid scent hit me hard. I smiled, since I knew that I was almost there. I ran faster. My stomach growled and I frowned. I didn’t hunt yet. My body craved, needed, blood for what I was going to attempt. But I couldn’t stop running. I heard a growl in the distance and a low laugh of Victoria. Realization hit me. I was going to be too late. They would all be dead by the time I got there and then…Jonathan, James and Victoria would have me. I shuddered at the thought and ran faster then I thought possible. The wind resisted me and I growled quietly in frustration. Then smoke filled the air.

I entered a small clearing and immediately saw five gigantic wolves surrounded by smoke. Jonathan and James were already on either side of the pack. Before I could think, I leapt at Jonathan at full force. He let out a gasp before he landed on the ground. I punched his face and yelled at the werewolves to run. Of course they didn’t, too confused to make any logical decision. Jacob, or the wolf Jacob, reacted after realization hit him . He let out a furious howl and leapt at the nearest demon, which happened to be James. The rest of the werewolves followed his lead, making sure to not let Victoria miss out in the fun. I was too busy screaming out encouragements to them, to realize that Jonathan was still under me. He knocked me off and grabbed my arm. He brought his face close to mine and snarled.

“Now I can finally end this!” he growled happily. “I hope Beck gets fired for letting you get killed.” He looked very happy at that thought.

“Beck isn’t my guardian angel, moron,” I said loudly. Jonathan looked very confused.

“What?” he asked angrily.

“She was reassigned. She is not my guardian angel anymore.” I smiled as I said that. The look on Jonathan’s face made me laugh. But then rage engulfed me. He threw me to the ground roughly and stepped on my stomach. He pressed down very hard, sending pain throughout me. I didn’t realize that he was so strong.

“Then now I can kill you with out any interruption,” he said. The grin on his face grew and his hand started to glow, a lot. “Goodbye,” he said mockingly before a blinding light blinded me. I felt Jonathan’s foot being whipped away and I sighed in relief. I stood up quickly, trying to see if the werewolves were alright. To my horror I saw blood. A lot of blood. But I couldn’t linger on the thought because I heard a voice that I thought I would never hear again.

“Get away from her!” Beck yelled loudly. I turned and saw her beating the crap out of Jonathan.

“Beck!” I yelled happily. She looked at me quickly and then kicked Jonathan in the stomach. He doubled over and she ran over to me. She hugged me tightly.

“I couldn’t let my favorite vampire die, could I?” she teased. I laughed despite the situation.

“But weren’t you reassigned?” I asked confused.

“Yes I was.”

“They won’t like that I came back down here, but I can’t let him kill you!” she growled. Before I could respond though, a black fireball hit beck’s Back. She fell down and then gripped her back in pain. “Run!” she yelled at me. But before I could take a step, blackness engulfed me as Jonathan’s laugh filled the background.

I knew vampires can’t dream, so when I saw a figure surrounded by white, light I was very surprised. I narrowed my eyes, trying to see who it was. To my complete shock and horror it was a woman dressed in all white. She had luscious black hair and her lips were a deep red. She looked at me angrily.

“So you’re the girl that got Beck all anxious. I hope your happy! Now I have to fire her!” she yelled very loudly. She then grinned largely. “And if Jonathan succeeds, then…I’ll just make it a surprise,” she said wickedly. I then realized what happened. I was either dead or really close. I started to panic. That made her laugh.

“Miss!” I heard a voice call. I turned around and saw Beck running over to us.

“You broke the rules, Beck. Now you have to pay the consequences,” the black-haired angel said happily. I guess she didn’t like Beck that much.

“But I couldn’t let him kill her-”

“Yes you could have! She is just a vampire! You-” a loud crack filled the air. I watched open mouthed as the black-haired angel, which I guessed was her boss, touched her bright red cheek with the tip of her fingers. “You are in so much trouble,” she said slowly. Beck just laughed and pointed a finger in her face.

“Let’s see who’s the one that get’s fired, Miss!” Beck said, emphasizing the word ‘Miss’ a whole lot. “I don’t even know why they hired you! You are nothing but a worthless-”

“Enough!” The black haired angel turned to face away from Beck. “You will pay the consequences Beck,” she said threateningly before she disappeared. I walked over to Beck and placed a hand on her shoulder.

“Beck, I don’t know what to say. You never should have-” I started.

“No! I had to help you! That bitch over there needed a good wake up call! What she does is wrong and I’m not going to rest until she is out of office!” I gasped at Beck’s words. That was the first time I ever heard Beck curse. I heard someone calling my name in the distance. “It’s time you return to Earth, Bella,” she whispered.

“Wait, you’re not coming back with me?” I asked worried. She smiled and shook her head sadly.

“I may not go anywhere for a little while.”

“Don’t worry about me. I’ll be alright. The only one I’m worried about is your boyfriend down there! You better go back to him before he explodes with anxiety,” she joked. I laughed lightly. “Goodbye, Bella,” she whispered.

I woke up to Edward’s face. I blinked a few times, trying to see if what I saw was real or fake. He wasn’t disappearing so I smiled in relief.

“Bella!” he yelled happily. He grabbed me and held me tightly. “Never do that again!” he said a little angrily. I rolled my eyes and looked around the meadow. I saw the Cullens there and the werewolves off to the side. I smiled at them, and they of course didn’t smile back. But at least they weren’t glaring, except for Paul, but is that really a surprise? My smile fell when I saw that someone was missing.

“Where’s Jacob?” I asked anxiously. Every werewolf’s face held the same expression. Guilt, sadness, anger… “Where is he?” I asked. My voice rose to a very loud level, making Edward flinch. I looked in his eyes and then he looked away. I stood up despite Edward’s restraining hand. I then remembered that nobody can hide anything from me anymore. I closed my eyes and looked into everyone’s mind.

How will she react? We can’t keep this from her forever…Alice.

Look at that leech. Like she really cares about him. I bet she won’t even regret that he is-

“WHAT?” I screamed at the top of my lungs. I cut of Paul’s thoughts and I fell to the ground. I buried my face in the dirt and gripped the grass. I felt sobs shaking me. I felt Edward’s cold hands on my shoulders, but I shook him off. How dare he try to keep this from me! I would have found out sooner or later. I jumped up angrily and ran over to the werewolves.

“Where is he?” I asked acidly. They didn’t move. “Where is he!” I screamed again. Seeing that they were going to be stubborn, I pushed them aside easily and looked at what they were hiding. My eyes widened as I saw the one thing I was trying to prevent.
