21. Jacob

Rating 5/5   Word Count 1055   Review this Chapter

There was Jacob Black lying in the dirt bloody and…I heard his heart beat. It was faint, but it was there. I sobbed in relief and ran over to him. I was glad that the other werewolves had the decency to put some cut-off jeans on him. I was still angry, though.

“Why aren’t any of you helping him?” I yelled at them. The werewolves looked away and the vampires just looked indifferent.

“The dogs won’t let us near him,” Edward said calmly. The werewolves all growled at this.

“We don’t want these leeches anywhere near him. For all we know, they’ll suck him dry!” One of the werewolves yelled.

“We already called an ambulance,” I think Jared said. I groaned loudly at that.

“They won’t be able to help him!” I yelled. “Only Carlisle can save him!” I received a lot of growls then. “What? It’s either that or he dies! Which one will it be?” The werewolves looked at each other undecided.

“Fine. He can work on Jacob. But we’ll be keeping a close eye on him,” Sam said coldly.

“Bella, get my medical kit,” Carlisle ordered. I wondered why he asked me to do it, but then I remembered that no other vampire actually in the area cared if Jacob lived or died. I ran back to the house as fast as I could. I found the bag in seconds and then ran out the door again. I heard my stomach growl and I remembered that I still needed to feed. Well, I would have to wait until later. But then I wondered why Jacob’s blood had no effect on me. Well, it did smell horrible. Yah, that’s probably why. I heard the thoughts of Carlisle so I knew that I was close.

Where is she? This boy is going to be dead soon. I still wonder…

I ignored the rest of his thoughts and ran even faster. I entered the clearing, worried for Jacob’s life. Carlisle was kneeling next to him, surveying the damage. I handed the bag to him quickly and he went right to work. I watched anxiously as Carlisle tried the impossible job of healing Jacob.

“What happened?” I asked curiously.

“After you were hit, Jacob went to go help you, but of course the demon saw him coming and hit him, too. They then entered the clearing,” Sam said. I didn’t really like how he said ‘They’, but I let it go. I looked over at my family. Everyone except Rosalie looked at me worriedly. I let out a sigh and looked at Jacob again. The blood was cleaned off and Carlisle was doing a fantastic job on him. I looked back at my family.

“You don’t have to stay here,” I said to them. They looked at each other nervously.

“No, it’s fine, Bella,” Alice said. But I knew the reason. They didn’t want to leave Carlisle and me alone with the werewolves. I nodded and looked into the trees.

“Is Victoria dead?” I asked. Edward nodded. I hoped that she wouldn’t become a demon. That would just be horrible. “What do we do now?” I asked. How were we going to win this war?

“We’ll think of something,” Edward said. But his thoughts said something different.

“I know you’re lying,” I said coldly.

“You don’t trust me?” Edward asked hurt.

“They can’t die, Edward. We can. We can’t win,” I said depressed. I’m finally back with my one true love and some demons had to come and ruin it all. I suddenly heard Jacob stirring. I turned to him eagerly.

“WHAT THE HELL?” He yelled. He tried to jump up, but his injuries forced him to stay down.

“Carlisle is trying to help you, Jake!” I said. Jacob looked at me in wonder.

“You’re alive,” he whispered. I smiled and nodded. He winced in pain.

“Just stay down,” I ordered him. He nodded and stopped moving. I looked over to Edward. I could feel the jealousy coming off him. I smiled at him and he weakly smiled back, but it quickly fell to a frown. I sighed and stood up. I walked over to Edward and whispered in his ear. “I have to hunt,” I said quietly. Edward nodded and took my hand. We ran out of the clearing and went to find some prey.

When we came back my stomach was full and I felt like a monster. But my dark mood lifted when I saw that Jacob was better. He was standing up and was thanking Carlisle nervously. I ran over to him and hugged him. He looked a little surprised.

“I’m glad you’re okay,” I said quietly. He nodded and patted my head.

“I guess this is where we say goodbye,” Jacob said sadly. I nodded and looked at his face. I had to tilt my head up high.

“You never stop growing,” I joked. He chuckled lightly, but then his face grew sad.

“Bye, Bella,” he said quietly.

“Bye, Jake.” I hugged him for a few minutes, until Paul coughed impatiently. Jacob smiled a me one last time before he morphed into a wolf and ran away with his pack. Edward walked over to me and put his arms around my waist.

“We better be getting back,” he said. I nodded and we ran back to the house. We all sat on the numerous couches and chairs in the room to discuss what we were going to do.

“What now?” Edward asked.

“I still say we can beat them,” Emmett said. Everyone ignored his comment.

“Maybe we can hide from them. They may not know where to find us,” Esme suggested.

“I don’t think that will work…Maybe we can make a deal with them,” Carlisle said thoughtfully.

“Like what?” I asked. Carlisle opened his mouth then closed it, not having an idea. Edward grabbed my hand and started to rub circles on my palm. I leaned on his shoulder and tried desperately to think of a solution.

“Is there any way to defeat a demon?” Carlisle asked with hardly any hope.

“I know a way,” a voice said from the corner of the room. To my surprise, Beck walked into the middle of the room…wearing a lot of pink.
