Each time we passed a sign that said something about Chicago my heart would start beating a mile a minute. I would press my hands and face to the window and see if I could see the first glimpse of the city. After a few times of doing that, Beck chuckled and rolled her eyes.

“You’re acting like a little kid,” she stated. I just snorted and looked around crazily when I saw a sign that said ‘Chicago 25 mi.’

“Oh my God, we’re almost there!” I yelled out. I got fidgety and played with my seatbelt. And due to Beck’s fast driving we were in the city in no time. The second we entered Chicago I wanted to jump out of the car and find what ever I was looking for, but Beck kept me in place.

“Calm down, Bella!” she said. “You don’t even know what you are looking for yet!”

“Well, what am I looking for?”

“You’ll find out later!” She said simply and turned her head back to driving.

“I don’t want to find out later! I want to find out now!” I wailed. Why was she torturing me like this?

“Well, I can’t tell you!”

“Why not?”

“Because I don’t know what we are looking for yet!”

“WHAT?!” I yelled at her. “You told me to travel half way across the country for no reason?”

“There is a reason! I’m just not sure why yet! I’m going to get my instructions soon!” she justified.

“When are you going to get them?” I asked a little more calm. I heard a phone ring somewhere, but I didn’t pay attention to it. But to my surprise I saw Beth snap her fingers and a cell phone appeared. She flicked it open and pressed it to her ear.

“Yah…okay…she has to do it? I can’t help her…oh…okay…bye.” Beck snapped the phone shut and snapped her fingers again. It disappeared into thin air. “I just got my instructions!” she said happily.

“Heaven uses a cell phone to talk to you?”

“Yes, what else would they use?”

“I don’t know…magic? Trances?”

“No! It’s a lot more convenient this way!”

“Whatever,” I mumbled. I wondered if Beck would ever cease to surprise me. “What do we have to do?”

“Not ‘we’, ‘you’,” she corrected me.

“Fine then. What do I have to do?”

“I can’t tell you.”

“What? Why? How can I figure it out by myself?”

“You’ll just know when the time comes,” Beck answered softly as if she was deep in thought. “But I’m going to make sure that you make the right decision.” I nodded discouraged. What would I find in Chicago?

“I’m confused…”

“Why?” she asked as perky as always.

“Why is heaven helping me? I am in love with a vampire after all,” I asked her. It really did make no sense.

“Vampires are people, too. They are just a different species,” she explained.

“So they can go to Heaven and Hell, too?” I asked incredulous. Edward would be so happy when he finds out-I started to shake and sobs started to form. What if I never did find Edward?

“Of course they can.” Beck stomped on the brakes and I flew forward. It took me a few seconds to realize that Beck was not the one that answered.

“Jonathan!” she yelled angrily. She quickly pulled into an abandoned ally way to avoid any spectators. “What do you want?” she yelled again. “Don’t you realize that humans are here?”

“Of course I know, I’m not stupid. And isn’t it obvious why I’m here?” he said looking at me. I gulped when I met his stare.

“You’re not going to kill Bella!” Beck cried out.

“You’re right, he isn’t.” All three of our heads turned. A figure was walking towards us. It was too dark to see his features, but then he walked in the light. To my complete horror…it was James. I shrieked in terror and grabbed Beck’s shirt. “I’m going to kill Bella,” James said narrowing his eyes at me. I realized then that he was not glittering.

“Not the new guy!” Jonathan wailed.

“New guy?” Beck asked.

“That’s right, I’m a demon now. And I’m here to get my revenge on Bella!”

“With the help from his mate!” I recognized the voice anywhere. Victoria stepped out of the shadows and joined James. Jonathan looked slightly annoyed.

“I can do it myself!” Jonathan yelled. He obviously never got competition before. Why was it that every bad happens to me? But my thoughts were cut short when James lunged at the car I was still sitting in.

Due to being a demon and not a vampire, James was a little slower in his attack. Beck opened the car door and pushed me out. I fell to the cold and slightly wet ground to see Beck land a punch right on James’s nose. Victoria also joined the fight. Jonathan was the only one, except for me, on the sidelines. He took his chance and walked towards me.

“It’s really not fair to do this, but I’m tired of playing games with Beck,” he said, grabbing my arm. He pulled me up roughly and pushed me against the nearest brick wall. His left hand started to glow and I shut my eyes. A blinding flash of light blinded me for a few seconds even though my eyes were closed. When I opened them, Jonathan was on the ground and beck was running over to me.

“Are you all right, Bella?” she asked worriedly. I obviously wasn’t, but I nodded anyway. “Good.” She turned around to face the three figures coming towards us. Beck got into a defensive stance, but I knew that it would do no good. She couldn’t possibly fight all three of them.

“Just give it up, Beck,” Jonathan said.

“Give the girl to me!” James yelled. Victoria looked eager, but Jonathan was just annoyed.

“This is my job! I’m assigned to Beck, not you!” Jonathan yelled. He was starting to walk towards James. “I know that Bella got you killed an all, but I was killed once, too! And I didn’t go seeking for revenge!” he screamed. I suddenly felt sorry for Jonathan.

“Where you killed once, too, Beck?” I asked quietly. She only nodded. James suddenly lunged at Jonathan. Victoria cheered James on at the sidelines. From where I was standing, it looked like Jonathan was winning.

“Let’s go!” Beck whispered. She grabbed my hand and we ran over to the car. We got in and drove off as fast as possible. When we were back on the road I started to ask her my questions.

“How does a person become and angel or demon?” I asked nervously. I wasn’t sure if Beck wanted to talk about it.

“Well, when someone is killed, they either go to Heaven or Hell. But when they go there, the really bad or good souls are turned into demons are guardian angels.”

“Oh…how did you die?”

“I drowned,” Beck said quietly.

“Oh. How did Jonathan die?”

“I think a gunshot wound. I think he was in the army.”

“But aren’t people in the army good?” I asked confused.
“I’m not an expert on Jonathan’s life you know!” Beck said angry and a little…embarrassed?

“Okay! Sorry,” I muttered. She looked down.

“No, I’m sorry.” She suddenly perked up. “We’re here!” She said excitedly. I looked out the car window and saw a beautiful brick house. It looked vacant and I could see dust on the furniture through the windows. There was a grand piano visible. I realized then who’s house it was.
