I knew in that instant exactly how Sam felt when he saw Emily, exactly how Jacob felt when he saw Renesmee, exactly how Quil felt when he saw Claire. There were thoughts I had never known rushing through my head, from thoughts of a friendly nature, to thoughts of a passionate nature and everything in between. She drew me like an open flame drew a pyromaniac; and curiously, wonderfully, lovingly and lustfully, I had to follow her. I had to touch that open flame. 6. Six - Complications
Rating 5/5 Word Count 2908 Review this Chapter
“So, basically, what you’re telling me is that werewolves, shape-shifters and vampires really do exist, and the fact I once believe they didn’t completely contradicts the truth?” asked Ginessa after we had attempted to give her the Cullen’s and Quileute’s history in a nutshell.
“Umm, yes,” smiled Jacob.
“I’m so sorry I spilled the beans,” sighed Reneesme. “I’ve always been really bad with that.”
“You’re getting better at it though, honey. Besides, all the other imprints know. Why shouldn’t Ginessa?”
I nodded. “I know it’s all very overwhelming Ginessa, but if you can just try to absorb as much as you can…”
“I think I pretty much got it.” She took a moment to compose herself. “Reneesme is a Cullen. The Cullens are a coven of vampires who do not feed on human blood. Reneesme’s mother was a human, but was transformed when she gave birth. Jacob used to love Bella, but he imprinted on Reneesme. There are a group of evil vampires called the Volturi, who sometimes threaten the Cullens. Now, there are some werewolves threatened by both the Cullens and the shape-shifters because…we don’t know why.” She paused to take another breath. “Over a hundred years ago, shape-shifters came into existence because of the Cullens. You guys are Quileutes who are descended from wolves, hence the shape-shifting, and you are obviously good friends with the Cullens.”
Jake and I looked at each other.
Ginny took a deep breath. “Okay.”
“Now, onto current business,” continued Jacob, clearing his throat. “I don’t think the werewolves followed us this far.”
“I hope not,” I gulped. “I personally like my apartment the way it is…without some random demons tearing it apart.”
Ginny laughed. “Do you know how ridiculous that sounds?”
Reneesme smiled. “I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but we like making the ridiculous reality.”
At least Ginessa wasn’t confused anymore. I hated feeling her confusion.
“You’re welcome to my home as long as you need it, but there isn’t much room here. Ginny and Nessie can have my room, and I guess Jake, you can have the couch. I’ll sleep on the loveseat.” For once, I was happy I didn’t have a roommate.
“I know you are trying to quit phasing, Seth, but I’m going to have to stand guard as long as there’s danger,” said Jake quietly. It was like he was expecting something else, though, that he wasn’t telling me about.
I nodded. “It’s okay. I think I’ve got a few years before it’s completely necessary.”
Poor Jake. The guilt had gripped him when the Cullens had left, and he with them. We lapsed into silence.
Reneesme touched Jacob’s face, sending him memories that I hoped would make him feel better. He smiled in response, and she blushed as she pulled her hands away. That was a Bella Blush if I ever saw one.
“There’s no need to worry,” he promised, voice a murmur. “I told your father and grandfather I will keep you safe, and I will.”
I glanced at Ginessa. “Are you all right?”
In truth, her eyes were a little dilated from shock, and she looked rather tired.
“Maybe you should get some sleep,” I suggested. After all, we had returned to the house later than normal. I kissed her forehead as she rose from the couch.
“Hey Seth?” she asked softly.
“Yes?” What could she possibly have to tell me? Her mood was complacent and tired; was there anything she never told me?
“Thank you. For everything.”
She was thanking me? After all of the events of the weekend, after everything she had done for me, she was thanking me? I couldn’t believe it. I could only smile in response as she headed to my room.
Jake motioned to Reneesme to follow her, and she gracefully leapt up from the cough to meet Ginessa in my room.
Jake sighed. “Do you have any food in this house?”
I grinned. “You should know better than to ask. I’m always just as hungry as you are.”
As we found some left over pizza in my sad apartment refrigerator, Jake peered at me with curiosity. “You look happier than I’ve seen you in years.”
“Does this happiness ever go away?”
He shrugged. “I’ve been in love with Reneesme for six years, and I’ve never been happier. Not even when I was in love with Bella.”
I nodded. “There are just…so many complications with everything. It’s all driving me crazy.”
“But you got rid of the fiancé easily enough.”
“Yeah. I was lucky.”
“Imprinting is absolute. Once she’s there, everything else seems like it comes second.”
I smiled. It was so incredibly true. “And what about other guys who looked at Reneesme?”
Jacob smirked. “If they come within a radius of Edward, I get to be overprotective. But if Edward isn’t around, I beat the shit out of them.”
“That explains why I beat up Ryan.”
Jake grinned. “Don’t you just love legal assault?”
I couldn’t help but beam. I had missed Jake an awful lot, and although I had known why he followed the Cullens around, I never fully understood it until I had imprinted myself and realized that nobody could bear to be away from someone who they were so close to.
“I talked to Sam the other day by the way,” began Jake quietly.
“Oh yeah? How is he?”
He nodded as we fell upon our respective couches. “He’s…well. He’s stopped. Phasing, I mean.”
Woah. That was something I had not expected. “So quickly? He was still a wolf on Saturday when we met.”
Jake shrugged. “He was close then.”
“Why did he call you and not me, though?”
He sighed. “I’m the official alpha now that Sam can’t be.”
“That’s amazing! It’s been a long time coming.”
Jake sighed again. “I guess. But with me phasing for eternity, you learning not to phase will be extremely difficult.”
“And Leah, too?”
“Yes. But Leah’s got it easy compared to the rest of you. The farther away from the pack she is, the less temptation there is to phase. She can’t hear any of us anymore. And the less she phases…”
“Yeah,” I replied. I laid down on the loveseat. “Everything just seems so…weird.”
He shrugged. “I guess it does. Seems like forever ago that we all lived in La Push. And had issues with the Cullens!” he snorted.
“That and the fact that I’ve imprinted.”
Jacob cast me a jubilant face. “Honestly, I was really hoping you would.”
“Yeah. You deserve it, Seth. You’re nicer than every guy…or girl…in the pack. And I think you’ve grown out of your babbling phase, which makes you even more worth it.”
I grinned. I definitely remembered those days. “That really means a lot, Jake.”
“And Ginessa! Phew! That girl is spunky! She makes every other spunky girl I’ve ever known look like Rosalie.”
“My total opposite,” I replied.
“Perfectly,” said Jake, yawning.
“Is it weird? Being in love with Reneesme when you know you once loved her mother?”
He shrugged. “The pack asks me that all the time. I ask myself that sometimes. But not really. Because the way I love Reneesme is triple fold what I felt for Bella. It almost erases all memory of her.”
I yawned, too. It had been a very long weekend, and the test I was completely unprepared for started at eight a.m. the next morning. I turned off the lights and found a comfy position on my little makeshift bed and resigned myself to sleep.
I could feel myself drifting off into a relaxed slumber when I sensed a sound of knocking at my front door. I glanced at Jacob in the darkness, already snoring, and groaned. So much for keeping watch.
A brush of cold air hit me as I opened my apartment door and looked into the now caramel eyes of Bella Cullen.
I blinked at her, unable to move as my brain slowly processed the fact that she really was standing before me.
She smiled warmly at me. I couldn’t help but hug her.
“Oh crap!” I exclaimed as she fell rigid beneath my palms. “Sorry! I must feel like an open flame.”
She shrugged and smiled. “Yeah, but it’s also been too long since I’ve hunted. I should have done so on the way, but…”
“Well, come in, please.”
“I guess you want to see Reneesme?”
Her eyes widened in agreement and she vigorously nodded. “Yes.”
“She’s asleep, I think…so is Jacob, and Ginessa…”
She raised her eyebrows. “Who’s Ginessa?”
I scratched my neck awkwardly. “She’s my…erm…imprint.”
She gasped. “Seth!” she hugged me rather roughly. “That’s so great!”
I had to stop and take her arms off from around me, as it felt like she was close to crushing my bones. And she was so cold! Even when she was a new vampire, I hadn’t remembered her being like this. “Bella…”
“Reneesme or Ginessa?”
“Ginessa. How is she?’
I blushed. “She’s just great. Best girl I’ve ever met in my life.”
Bella laughed a little. “I should hope so.” Her carefree mood seemed to fade a little bit, and she looked to the floor. If she weren’t so exquisitely beautiful and frozen in time as a young woman, I would have guessed she would have had that motherly worry all over her face.
“What about Reneesme? Is she all right?”
“Doesn’t she have the strength of a vampire?”
Bella nodded, but looked unsure. “She has been through a few rough spots lately.”
I raised my eyebrows. “How so?”
“Edward and I thought she should go to school just for a little while to acquaint herself with normal human activities. She’d been mostly homeschooled all her life, because she grew so fast. But when she turned about five and a half, her growing rate slowed down enough so that we could send her to private high school. Naturally, she was placed in all Advanced Placement classes, and aced all of them without studying.”
“Naturally,” I agreed. “Edward’s got over 120 years of experience and two medical degrees, and you were pretty smart when you were human…probably even smarter now…”
Bella smiled. “Thanks. And it’s true, Reneesme is probably one of the smartest growing children to have ever lived on the earth.” She groaned a little. “But these awful, awful teenage girls made fun of her and spread all these rumors about her.” She bit her lip with a maternal worry. “She came home every day for a month in tears. Carlisle and Esme were beside themselves, just as Edward and I were. Whatever we said to her couldn’t console her. Shopping wouldn’t do, chocolate wouldn’t do, late night talks, giving her some more freedom…nothing. Not even Jasper influencing her emotions did a drop of good. That was when Jacob really came into her life as a ‘boyfriend’. He told her at last what imprinting really was, and that he loved her.”
“Only a few months after that, Edward freaked out because Alice envisioned them having sex.”
I chuckled. “But he didn’t give his consent then?”
She shook her head. “He said she wasn’t emotionally ready for it, and I agreed.”
“But…” she trailed off for a second. “Jacob helped her recover a lot.” Bella paused. “Edward still refused to give his consent for anything. He won’t let them marry until Reneesme turns seven, which is our equivalent of eighteen, and he specifically told her he wanted her to practice abstinence. Well, Reneesme had a bought of teenage rebellion in her, and they ran away, and got caught up in the moment when the real werewolves found them. We didn’t realize what had happened until the werewolves showed up at our house. Alice couldn’t see anything, of course. Scared Edward more than I can say.” Bella stared out into space. “I’m sorry. I’m babbling.”
“I don’t mind. I like being filled in. I miss you guys.”
“Where’s Reneesme?” she repeated after a little hug.
I led her down the hall, where female voices could be heard. Ginessa was sighing. “I just…I feel this pull towards Seth that I can’t explain. It’s something I never had with Ryan, or any other guy for that matter. I haven’t thought about Ryan since Seth told me he would love me forever.
Reneesme giggled. “Daddy really makes me mad sometimes.”
“Oh yeah, I forgot about your parents.”
“He just won’t let me do anything with Jacob! It took him forever just to let him hug me for real, and then to kiss me, and now that these stupid werewolves are chasing us, I can’t make love to him any time soon…”
At that point, angry-caring-mother-Bella-mood kicked in. “Watch yourself, young lady,” she said, demanding as she opened the door.
“Mom!” Reneesme was so overcome with shock that she leapt off my bed and into her mother’s arms. “What are you doing here?”
“I figured you preferred me over your father to look out for you right now.” She sighed. “He bucked me because he wanted to pick a fight with Jacob for putting you in danger, but Carlisle stalled him long enough for me to get away.”
“But Jake and I weren’t doing anything wrong!” she protested.
“Oh really?” asked Bella with raised eyebrows. “Ren, your father told you not to have sex with Jacob until you married him, and he isn’t going to let you marry for another two years at least, when you are fully grown and able to handle all the things that go along with sex.”
“But that’s so unnecessary and old fashioned! Jacob isn’t going to stop loving me, and I’m not going to stop loving him! So why can’t we just…? While we’re in the 21st century?”
“Honey, I agree with you…somewhat. But your father…”
Reneesme let out an exasperated sigh.
“Well, uh…I’m sorry to be rude, but I really need some sleep because I have an exam tomorrow,” I interjected smoothly. “Is there anything I can get you?”
Reneesme’s face lit up. “Do you have any chocolate?”
I furrowed my eyebrows. “Yeah…I might have some…”
“It’s the only human food I really like,” she gushed. “And Jake and I haven’t hunted in forever, so I’m pretty damn hungry.”
I shrugged. “Sure, I guess.”
When I returned to the room from digging up the last chocolate bar my house would probably see for centuries, I realized that Bella had gone to stand guard at my door.
“Here you go,” I said, handing her the Hershey’s chocolate bar. “Is there anything else I can do for either of you?”
“Nope!” Reneesme looked happier than usual as she nibbled on her little bar of heaven.
“Okay, well, goodnight, then…”
As I headed to the door, I heard Ginessa’s voice softly, but clearly. “Seth?”
I slowly turned. She opened the door from my room and met my gaze.
Ginessa paused for a moment. “I have a question for you.”
“Ask me anything.”
“Is this okay?”
“What? Is what okay?”
“Me staying in your apartment. And me not going back to my college, feeling like a huge burden…”
She kept babbling about her apparent vices, but I was so shocked at her behavior that I could only drift in and out of the conversation.
I covered her mouth with my hand. When the skin met, it made a clapping sound, and she wavered a little bit when the force hit her face. I couldn’t take hearing that she was upset or hurt anymore, and ever since our first kiss, I had wanted to kiss her again so maddeningly that I could not help myself this time, and I met our lips in a little bit of a frenzy.
She was helpless at my new take charge attitude, but I was impatient. I brought her closer to me, her slim waist beneath my strong hands. Once she realized what was happening, she responded in our kiss with more fire than I was expecting, locking herself around me and fixing her hands in my hair.
Before long, I recognized that her leg had someone wrapped itself around my waist and that my hand was on her thigh.
“I’m sorry,” I said, beginning to pull away, even though my body was screaming in protest.
“Why?” she whispered, breathing uneven.
“Because we aren’t alone.”
She groaned. “Oh, my God. Grr. The moment we are…”
I couldn’t help but smile at her. “I love you more than you can know.”
“I think it may be premature to say the same just yet. But you’ve been a wonderful friend, and I want you in my life. I want you.” She kissed me again. “But I’ll wait for that just as you have to wait for me.”
“I don’t want to wait, but there are guests of mine here, and…”
“Soon,” she whispered. “Goodnight, Seth.”
I headed down the stairs, back to my little couch.
“Patience, little brother,” murmured Jacob, eyeing me a little as I settled into the loveseat.
Patience. I was always patient in situations. Normal situations. But Ginessa abnormal. Extraordinary. And I couldn’t be patient in situations that involved her.
