I was still in my room when I heard footsteps on the stairs. It was probably Michelle or Andre…
“Bella, we've got a guest,” Emma said softly from behind me. I glanced over my shoulder, and then nodded.
“I'll be down in a second,” I whispered, turning back and shuffling my sheet music into order. She was gone back downstairs by the time I’d finished putting the pages into a neat pile on my desk. I stood, making sure I looked respectable – hair tidy, clothes straight and wrinkle free – and then gave up. If we had guests, or even just one guest, I needed to look fine. I changed my sweater into a short-sleeved black blouse, then slipped off my shoes to pad silently down the hallway and down the stairs into the unused kitchen. When I got there, I froze.
Edward was sitting in the middle of my kitchen.
I was still frozen, and Andre moved to put his arms around my shoulders reassuringly.
“It's alright, Bells,” he whispered so low only I could hear him. “He found out about Tourniquet and realised who you are. He wants to speak to you.” I leant into his shoulder, my eyes closed as I shook my head.
“I – I can’t, Dre,” I whispered back. “I…I can’t deal with the pain. You saw what I was like…”
“I know. We'll stay right in the next room. As soon as you need us, we'll come,” he assured me, and I pulled away to nod once, biting my lip as he patted my shoulder and Emma wrapped her arm around his waist. Lee and Michelle followed as they left the room, leaving me alone to face him…Edward.
It was so frustrating not being able to hear all their thoughts! They were all glaring at me as Bella appeared in the doorway. The shock was visible on her face, and the one who obviously hated me, Andre, crossed the room to hug her. She leaned into him, shaking her head at something he said. My dead heart ached. Had she moved on? Then Andre released her, patted her shoulder, and the red-haired woman, Emma, wrapped her arm around his waist. He put hers around her shoulders and they left the room, Michelle dragging Lee out by his hand behind them. It was just me…and Bella.
Her gold eyes were wide, filled with pain. I had to break the silence…
“Alice played me her recording of you singing last night,” I murmured, knowing she would hear me. “You sounded so beautiful…”
“What do you want, Edward?” she asked, her voice filled with ill-concealed pain. “Why are you here?” I stood and crossed the distance between us to stand in front of her, looking down into her eyes. She looked so sad…I never wanted her to be sad.
“I'm here because I missed you, Bella,” I whispered. “I wanted to see you…”
“So why did you leave if you were just going to miss me?” she asked, her voice sharp. I winced. “I gave you everything I had, Edward. When you left, you left me with nothing. Did you know Victoria was only seconds away from completely draining me when Charlie interrupted? Did you know he died because you left?” I was speechless. What could I say to that?
I was almost sobbing by the time I finished what I was saying. I hated to be so cruel, but he had to know what he did to me when he left. When I stopped speaking, I looked at the floor and wrapped my arms around myself, leaning against the doorway as I struggled to stop from crying.
“Bella…” his hand touched my arm, and my head snapped up.“Don’t touch me!” I screamed, and forced him away from me. The look on his face was one of pure shock as my power sent him flying. Oh, right. I forgot I had physical shields too. I sank to my knees on the kitchen floor, burying my face in my hands as I dry-sobbed. Then two pairs of arms were around me, and Michelle was there, soothing away my pain as Andre pulled me gently up from the floor. Michelle could stop pain, a talent I was grateful for. I dimly saw Emma and Lee restraining a shocked Edward as Michelle and Andre took me back upstairs to my room.
I was absolutely furious at Edward Cullen. I hadn’t seen Bella in this much pain since before I’d changed Emma. What on earth had he done to her in there?! I sent Michelle back downstairs as I carefully cradled Bella to my chest.
“It's alright, honey,” I murmured as I stroked her hair. “It'll be fine. If you want, we can move…”
“No, Dre,” she whispered, sniffing back nonexistent tears. “I'll stay. We've got a good thing going here, and I actually do really like Tourniquet,” she added with a small, sad laugh. I hugged her tighter for a second.
“Are you sure? Because you don’t have to stay if you don’t want to,” I assured her. She shook her head.
“I'm not letting him force me away,” she muttered. “I'll stay and go on with life as if he doesn’t exist. I've managed for this long, I'm sure I can last a year until graduation.” I hugged her again. I was so proud of her! Despite her being older than me, she was like a little sister I’d never had.
“I'm proud of you, Bells,” I murmured, setting her down on her couch slowly. “You can stay here until he goes. I'll come and get that new music off your desk so we can start practising later.” She nodded, and closed her eyes. Although she couldn’t sleep, she meditated. I left her room silently, pulling the door shut behind her. I had a few words to say to Edward Cullen…
I could tell as soon as Andre entered the room that he was not impressed with me. I was still in shock myself… I had no idea Bella could do that.
“Do you know how much you hurt her?” Andre hissed at me, glaring. “She was in pain for over a decade! It was only when I changed Emma that she started doing everything for herself! She was practically catatonic!” I winced. I hadn’t meant to cause her pain…
“I never meant to cause her pain,” I whispered, agonised. “I just wanted her to have a chance at a normal human life…without me being what I am putting her in constant danger…”
“Yeah, and that turned out well,” Andre muttered. “She's like my little sister, and I hate it that she's in pain like this. Get out of her house now.” I was about to comply, but then Alice, followed by the rest of my family, were knocking at the door.
I winced as I felt the pain Edward was in. Ouch…I sent calming waves through the house, and found another in pain on the second floor.
The door opened, and the one named Andre looked out at us all. He glanced around at us all, his face closed. He was angry; I could sense it.
“Bella doesn’t want to see you,” he said through gritted teeth. “Take Edward with you when you leave. I won't have my sister hurt any longer.”
“Let them in, Andre,” a calm female voice said, and I felt that she was only slightly less angry than Andre. “Stop being rude.” Andre looked back over his shoulder, then sighed and reluctantly stood aside to let us all in. The one who had been talking to him was Emma, the red-haired beauty. I knew Rosalie would have been jealous, if she’d not been sure of Emmett. Emma smiled slightly.
“Hello, you lot. I don’t believe I know all of you yet, though,” she added, looking at Esme and Carlisle.
“My name is Doctor Carlisle Cullen, this is my wife Esme,” Carlisle said smoothly. I figured from her lack of reaction that she had already guessed as much. I wondered how much Bella had told them about us.
“Nice to meet you. I'm Emma, and this is my mate Andre. Michelle and Lee are through here,” she continued, leading us into the hall open front room and then through to the lounge-room and the kitchen. Edward was slumped by the wall, and I raised an eyebrow at him.
‘What's wrong with you?’ I asked silently, and he rolled his eyes. I was relieved he could at least show a little sarcasm. Emma motioned towards the table.
“Please, some of you sit. There is much to talk about.”
