“Alice, how will it go?” I asked, worried.

“It’ll be fine,” she responded quietly. A blank expression appeared on her face for only a second, but that second was more than long enough for me to notice it. “Yes, it’ll be perfectly fine.” She smiled, and I knew her vision told her something good.

“Edward,” I thought to my son, “It’ll be completely fine.” Although I was saying it to relieve him, I was relieving myself more. I had complete faith in Edward, but if anything were to go wrong, I would not only lose my newest daughter, but my oldest son, too. Well, Alice and I were here for a reason.

“Are you sure you are ready for this?” I heard him say.

“I’m really not scared, Edward. All I want is to be with you forever,” Bella replied. I was surprised that Edward even asked, as Bella didn’t seem to be one for changing her mind.

“Edward, it’s too late to change your mind. If you don’t do it now, I’ll get Carlisle over here,” Bella whispered, just loud enough for me to hear. From the little tone I could hear in her tone, it was easy to tell that that wasn’t what she wanted. That was a last resort. Any way, she was changing today.

And then it happened. I could hear his hard teeth, crunching down on her soft flesh. I ran up there as fast as I possibly could, and within the split-second it took me to get up there, the screaming started.

“The fire! Somebody stop the fire!” Bella screamed, in agonizing pain.

“Oh no, Bella, no!” Edward screamed in horror. I came rushing in after Emmett and Jasper, who were on James immediately. I glanced at Bella, and it wasn’t good. “Edward, you may have to change her,” I thought, though he chose to toss it aside.

“Bella, please! Bella, listen to me, please, please, Bella, please!” He was agonized.

Carlisle!” He looked at me with a desperate look in his eye.

“Edward, you might have to do it, or lose her forever,” I reminded.

“Bella, Bella, no, oh please, no, no!” He fought against my opinion with all his heart, but he was risking Bella’s life. I walk up to Bella, to thoroughly examine the damage. I pressured the large wound on her head, and she cried out in response. “Bella!” Edward cried, fear consuming his whole body.

“She lost some blood, but the head wound isn’t deep. Watch out for her leg, it’s broken,” I informed my fretted son calmly.

I had never seen Edward such pain, not in the 70 some years we had been together. If he lost Bella, I had a feeling I would lose him.

I walked over to Bella’s side, and gently touched the side of her chest.

“Some ribs, too,” I said. Suddenly, Bella’s expression changed.

“Edward,” she attempted to say, though it came out more like “Ewah”

“Bella, you’re going to be fine. Can you hear me, Bella? I love you,” consoled Edward.

“Edward,” she whispered, far more clear than the last attempt.

“Yes, I’m here.”

“It hurts,” she whimpered. Something else was definitely wrong; I just couldn’t put my finger on what.

“I know, Bella, I know,” he said, his eyes full of concern. Then, to me, “Can’t you do anything?” He was anguished.

“My bag, please,” I said, turning to Alice. “Hold your breath, Alice, it will help.”

Alice?” Bella groaned.

“She’s here, she knew where to find you.” Edward glanced back at me, eyes still full of concern. I still couldn’t figure out what else was wrong.

“My hand hurts,” she said. No, it couldn’t be, I thought.

“I know, Bella, Carlisle will give you something, it will stop.”

“My hand is burning!” She screamed, her eyes finally fluttering open. I glanced down to her hand, and I didn’t even need to see it to confirm it.

“Bella?” Edward asked, frightened.

“The fire! Someone stop the fire!” She was bitten.

Carlisle! Her hand!” I couldn’t believe he hadn’t already seen it in my thoughts.

“He bit her,” I nearly screamed, appalled. Edward caught his breath.

“Edward, there isn’t a lot of venom, and there is a lot of blood,” Alice hinted, though Edward already knew what he needed to do. “Edward, you have to do it.”

“No!” He bellowed.

Alice,” Bella moaned.

“There may be a chance,” I said, a light bulb flickering on in my head.

“What?” Edward begged desperately.

“See if you can suck the venom back out. The wound is fairly clean.”

“Will that work?” asked Alice, curiously.

“I don’t know, but we have to hurry.”

End Flashback.

There was no hurry now, there was no going back. But Edward’s anguish and concern and Bella’s pain and fear were exactly the same as two years ago.

“I can’t believe I did this to her. She’s going to hate me,” Edward whispered.

“No, she won’t, Edward. Believe me; she loves you more than life herself. She very clearly remembered the pain from when James bit her, yet she was willing to go through with this anyway,” I responded, rubbing his back gently.

We stood there in silence, all but Bella, for several hours, until Edward’s frustration with himself and Bella’s pain became too much.

“Carlisle, I need to hunt. Can you stay here with her while Alice and I go to Goat Rocks?” Edward requested, guiltily.

“Of course, Edward. She’ll be fine,” I told him again. Instantly, they were gone into the woods.

Two days later, the pain in Bella’s screams was still rising. The pain was generally at its high point around the middle, and we were far past the middle for even a longer-than-average transformation. I fought back against the ominous feeling in my long-dead guts, just in time for Edward and Alice to arrive back. They, too, though, seemed to reach the same conclusion I did. Her skin was starting to sparkle in the rare sunlight, which meant that she was changing. But why was it taking so long?

“It’ll be okay, Edward. Why don’t you and Alice go back to the house, and I will call you the second anything changes,” I said, glancing nervously over to Bella.

“I can’t leave her! Not in this pain. Not ever!” Edward was tortured by this.

“Edward, it’s clearly for the best. I could sense your anger from the house,” Jasper said as he appeared, seemingly out of nowhere.

“Just because it makes me hurt to watch her doesn’t mean I should leave! Her pain is 10000 times worse than what I am suffering. It is the least I can do. I put her in this pain. I can’t leave just to relieve my own. I can’t do it!” He screamed, looking over to Bella, who was clearly in pain. Her eyes were screwed shut, and her body curled up into a ball. Her screaming was incessant.

Finally, the third day of her transformation was coming to a close. Yet nothing seemed to have changed.

“Transformations are only supposed to last two days, three at the most. She should be done by now. Something must be wrong,” I thought. Edward looked up at me. I smiled at him, and realized that I was caught. I tried to come up with something comforting to say.

“It’s okay, son. You didn’t bite down for very long, and she probably didn’t get a lot of venom in her system,” I thought, hoping that would soothe him. If possible, though, he looked even more pained.

Another two days passed. This transformation was really starting to make me wonder.

“Carlisle, it’s been five days, are you sure she’s okay?” Edward asked. Honestly, I wasn’t sure, but I couldn’t let Edward know that. Her screaming was finally starting to quiet, but her heart kept beating. Perfectly.

“Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” Her scream was far more agonizing than before. Her heart finally began to slow. It was almost over. Almost.

“Bella, Bella, are you awake? Are you okay?” Edward asked her, as I started to walk away. “Bella, Bella!”

“Edward,” I thought I heard Bella mutter. “Forever.” Yes, that was definitely her. A sigh of relief escaped my lips. Edward could finally have his happily ever after.
