I stumbled out of my truck, sprinting towards the small ranch styled house. The door opened before I could knock, and I tripped into open arms. Jake's open arms.
"Bella? What's wrong?" He asked, after realizing that I was crying. He led me inside, to the couch and sat down with his arms around me.
"I can't stay at home" I whispered. He rubbed my back soothingly. "Please."
"Of course Bella, you're always welcome here. But won't he be mad?" He asked, obviously confused, but with a slight happy tone to his voice. I shook my head at his question. "Why not?" He asked slowly.
"Gone." I managed to choke out. They'd been gone for over a month.
"He left you again?" He hissed.
"No. They went to Italy.....said too dangerous for me....supposed to be back in a week....but they weren't..." I sobbed. I leaned against him as he pulled me closer, trying to calm me down.
"Bells, why have you been living alone for over a month, if it was this bad?" He asked. "You should have come sooner."
"I thought that you hated me." I choked out. I looked up and he put his palm against my chin.
"Bells, I could never hate you." He murmured. "I will always be here for you. You remember that okay?" I nodded my head, letting my eyes slide closed. I finally felt safe. Safe enough to actually sleep. I woke the next morning in Jake's arms. I looked up and saw him looking down at me.
"Morning sleepy." He said cheerfully. "I tried to move you to Billy's old room, but you sort of freaked out in your sleep." I nodded slowly, as I began to extract myself from his arms. I stood up and stretched and Jake quickly poked me in the stomach. I swatted his hand away.
"No poking," I mumbled. He began chuckling and stood up next to me.
"Okay, we can put your stuff in Billy's old room." I nodded, and followed him down the hallway. He opened a door, and showed me into a decent sized room with a large bay window and a double bed. "Hungry?" He asked. I nodded and he took me back to the kitchen. In seconds he had a plate of French toast sitting in front of me with about two slices on my plate and ten on his own.
"Piglet." I said he gave me a wounded look before digging in. I started cracking up as he finished in seconds. "You are such a guy. Oh, how's Billy and Sue doing?" I asked.
"They're really happy. I haven't seen much of him ever since they got married and he moved up there. It's a good thing Leah moved in with that guy she's dating. She didn't seem to excited that they got married." I nodded; I had always thought that the whole Sam and Emily thing had kinda killed her heart. But I was glad that she had finally started dating someone again.
"So how have you been since the accident?" He asked, I shrugged.
"Okay, I guess. I haven't really thought about it much. I just can't handle being in that house by myself." Ever since the car accident that took Charlie's life, I had hated being in my house. Normally, I would spend all my time at the Cullens, but then they left for Italy, forcing me to go home.
"You can stay here for as long as you need to." He said. I gave a quick smile and got up to give him a tight hug.
"Thanks Jake." I said into his neck. He put an arm around me, and we stayed like that for a while. Eventually the day wore on and soon it turned into another day, and another, and finally the days shifted into weeks. All the while, the Cullens were still gone. Jake kept me well distracted. Many times they shifted to the back of my mind, but of course they always would reappear eventually, and the panic would set in.
We ended up hanging out at Emily and Sam's house a lot with the rest of the packs. Nowadays, most of them had now either imprinted or found someone they really liked. When we had walked in the first day, everyone had frozen with the exception for Embry and Quil who began cheering and came over to give me a hug. They quickly began to introduce me to everyone, starting with Embry’s girlfriend Sarah. She was really sweet. She had gorgeous golden blonde hair that was full of waves that hit the small of her back.
Everyone seemed really nice and I ended up having a lot of fun. These past few weeks had held a large amount of excitement for me, even though I was freaking out about Edward being missing. I was quite surprised that I hadn't fallen completely to shreds since Edward left. Ever since I had moved in with Jake, I was slightly composed. Pretty soon, the weeks had turned into months; it had been three months since the last time I had seen Edward. It was on that fateful night, that my future had changed.
I was so angry that day; at Edward, at myself, at everyone. It was the day that I had first met him, surprise, surprise that he wasn't here, just like he disappeared that day. It had been three months, of broken promises, three months of not seeing him that had made me furious with him. He swore that he would never leave me, that he would always be there, for eternity, because he loved me. I spent the day in Billy's old room, not wanting to let Jake realize that I was so angry.
"Why should I let Edward do this to me?" I exhaled out loud. "Every time he makes a promise, it ends up broken. So why am I surprised that he didn't keep this one?" I shook my head angrily. I mean what was the point of being in a relationship if one of the partners was never around? Eventually I meandered out to the kitchen, where Jake was sitting.
The thought was random, but then I realized that it wasn't. Jake was always there. He would always be there, in fact he normally refused to leave. I grinned at the thought. I looked up at him, as he smiled over at me. It was then that my mind had made itself up, without my permission. My body seemed to take over me, as I walked up to where Jake was standing and before I could begin thinking coherently, I had grabbed him by the collar and had started kissing him.
At first, he seemed to be in shock that this was happening. But before I could let him go, his arms had wrapped around my waist, pulling me closer, and welding my body to his. My arms slipped up to encircle his neck as my lips moved in a way that they had never done before. All at once, my feet were lifted off the ground, I felt like I was floating, but all at once, Jake had set me onto the counter.
He tried to pull back for a moment, but I didn't give him the chance. I clung to him, and without a second thought he had pulled me back to him. Gasping for air, he began kissing my jaw, at that moment, I remembered that he was still wearing a shirt. The one day he actually remembered to put one on. I hopped down from the counter, moving closer to him, and pulled his shirt off.
I woke up the next morning in Jake's arms. Somehow the afghan on the back of the couch had been draped over us. Not wanting to wake up just yet, I rolled over onto my stomach, and pressed my cheek against Jake's chest. His arms tightened around me instantly, and I drifted off to sleep, awaking later on to the smell of bacon. I was wrapped in the green afghan, and I could hear Jake in the kitchen. I threw on my clothes, until I realized that I couldn’t' find my shirt. So I went into the kitchen in my bra.
Jake grinned at me over his shoulder, and I began blushing, as I saw my shirt draped over the back of a chair. I pulled it on, and then walked up to Jake and put my arms around him. He kissed the top of my head and continued cooking.
"Okay, I'm dying to know. When did you learn how to cook?" I asked, still surprised that he could.
"Well, I couldn't rely on Emily to feed the entire pack after Billy moved in with Sue. I mean, that's a lot of food. So I took a few classes with the television." He answered, as he flipped a few pancakes onto a plate. He passed it to me and I went to grab the syrup out of the fridge. After we had finished eating, Jake looked up, and began watching me.
"What?" I asked, embarrassed. He shook his head smiling. I shared in with the grin, as I began clean up. Halfway through loading the dishwasher, his arms ensnared my waist and Jake spun me around.
"Do you know how beautiful you are?" He asked. I shook my head, and he slowly lowered his face to mine. I leaned up just enough, to meet him. It was soft, and sweet. I wrapped my arms around his neck, letting one of my hands to run through his hair. Jake responded by picking me up and carrying me to his room.
After the next couple of weeks, was when it had began. Each morning I would start throwing up. Jake got really worried, thinking that I had picked up a stomach virus or something. After several repeats of this, he finally cornered me.
"Bella, I'm worried, you really should go see a doctor. I don't want you to get any sicker." I nodded, promising to go. But I had my own suspicions. One day, when he was out with the pack on patrol, I took a pregnancy test, and it came out positive. I was freaked, and nervous, having no clue as to what Jake would do. Would he want it, or would he want to get rid of it. But a tiny part of me got really happy.
That night, when Jake got back, I was trembling. He pulled me into a tight embrace, whispering reassurances into my ear.
"Jake, I have to talk to you." I whispered. He looked up sharply, fear in his eyes.
"He's back isn't he?" He hissed. I blinked.
"What? No." I answered. Why would he automatically think that?
"Then what is it Bells?" He asked.
"Um...well...I'm" I began. But I seemed to be having trouble saying it. So, I tried a different approach. "Jake....we're..." but once again, I wasn’t' able to say those simple words.
"Bells, you know you can tell me anything." He whispered.
"Well, you know how I've been sick?" I asked. He nodded. "I know why."
"You went to the doctor?" I shook my head.
"I took a test."
"And?" He asked, excitedly.
"It came out positive." Jake let out a whoop of laughter. I stared at him in wonder, as his hand slid to the nape of my neck and pulled me into a sharp kiss.
"That is awesome!" He yelled. I grinned, caught up in his enthusiasm.
"Really?" I asked. "You're not upset?"
"Why would I be upset?" he asked a silly grin on his face. "This is one of the happiest days of my life!" He pulled me into his arms, swinging me around the room, I yelped, in surprised, and erupted into giggles and then the doorbell rang.
"It's open!" Jake yelled, and nearly the entire pack walked in. "Hey, guys." He said grinning. I looked up at him, confused as to why he didn't seem surprised that they had just showed up.
"CONGRATS!" They all yelled, taking turns to hug me. I was so confused.
"What are you guys talking about?" I asked, grinning.
"As if you didn't know." Embry yelled. "You're having a baby, and you're going to hide that from the pack?" He asked pulling me into a hug. "Did you forget that there are no secrets between us?" I grinned even further, finally understanding.
"Yep. Bells, you are turning into such a blonde." Jake teased, tugging on a strand of my hair. I swatted at him. "Hey, don't ignore the truth." he murmured, pulling me into his arms. Eventually the rest of the girls showed up to congratulate me and Jake. It turned into a huge party, and for once, I enjoyed it. Even though it was originally centered on Jake and me, it shifted to everyone, as the boys began to have competitions.
"Okay, so Sam beat us to the transformation, and the imprinting, but apparently Jake beat him to the next step!" Embry yelled; they all erupted into laughter, as Sam and Jake tackled him.
"Guys, easy on the furniture!" I yelled.
"Okay mom!" They roared teasingly. I rolled my eyes and grinned over at Sarah, who motioned me into the kitchen. I followed her, as I took another glance at Jake.
"Hey Bella." She said, once we were alone.
"Sarah, how've you been?" She grinned.
"Pretty good. I've been really happy ever since I met Embry." She said blushing a bit. "But I cornered you for a reason. Have you thought about names?" At that moment, I realized what I wanted to name the baby, regardless of the sex.
"I' am going to ask Jake what he thinks about naming her after Charlie." I said quietly.
"Oh, you're dad. I'm really sorry about that. I went with Quil to the funeral." She whispered softly. I nodded. "But that would be a great idea."
"I was thinking about Charlotte for a girl." I said. "Nickname could be Charlie."
"Oh that would be so pretty!" She squealed. I grinned, caught up in her excitement.
"Bella! There you are. How excited are you?" Emily asked, upon walking into the kitchen.
"A little. I’m mostly relieved at the moment. I was kind of nervous ever since I found out today." I said looking at my feet.
"Well, don't be, we're all going to be here for you." She walked over and gave me a hug.
"Thanks Emily." I said. Sam was so lucky to have her. Emily was the sheer essence of perfect.
"Okay, they're all clamoring for food. Want some help?" she asked. I grinned.
"I've got a better idea." I said. "Jake!" I called. He appeared momentarily.
"Yeah Bells?" He asked, kissing me on the cheek.
"You're on kitchen duty." I said, grinning. I walked out the door, followed by Emily and Sara.
"But, Bells." He complained.
"Jake, you said that you didn't want Emily to always have to cook." I pointed out. As we reentered the room, Jared and Paul were attacking each other on the floor, while Kim looked a bit worried. Eventually everyone settled down, as they got hungry.
"Where's Jake?" Kim suddenly asked, and Emily, Sara, and I erupted into giggles.
"What?" Sam asked.
"Kitchen Duty," I managed to choke out. The rest of the evening was a lot of fun, and by the time everyone had left, I was exhausted. Jake and I crashed onto the couch and just sat there for a while.
"Bella, what would you say, about moving in with me, permanently." He asked, suddenly. I looked up at him, grinning.
"Are you sure?"
"Positive." He grinned at me,
"I'd say that I would love to." He pulled me into a sharp kiss, not allowing me to breathe.
"I love you." He whispered.
"I love you too." I murmured, back, realizing once again, that it was true.
The next morning I headed over with several boxes to Charlie's old house. I went straight up to my room, and began loading everything that I Edward had ever given me, the album from Renee, that was filled with pictures of him, his cds, even the dark blue blouse that he had liked so much. Eventually after the box was completely filled, I picked up the small velvet box that was so familiar, and gently slid my ring off of my finger, and set it inside. I put the small box on top of the blue shirt and picked up the large cardboard box and took it to my truck, to add to the two filled with clothes that I would need.
I drove down the familiar driveway, and pulled out the box of stuff. I pushed the door open, surprised that it was unlocked and slowly made my way upstairs. Everything was covered in dust, no wonder, seeing as they had all been gone for nearly four months. I walked into Edward's room, and my breath caught. It was in the same state that I had last seen it, with the exception of the absent lived in look, and all of the dust. I slowly walked over to the beautiful, sleigh bed, that Edward had bought me, and set the box on top of it.
"Good bye." I whispered, before fleeing the room. Before I left the floor though, I made sure to look in on Alice's room. It was its normal bright sunshine yellow, without, Alice. My hands snuck around my waist, as I received a tiny pang for the sister that I would never get, nor see ever again. Eventually, I began walking downstairs, freezing upon reaching the landing. There, I found myself staring at a strange, figure, who was standing at the end of the long hallway.
