This is Recklessness in Edward's POV; it's quite a bit longer and has some extra scenes in it that are not in Bella's POV. As always though, it's a lot more interesting.
1. Chapter 1: Pathetic
Rating 3.5/5 Word Count 1808 Review this Chapter
How desperate could I possibly get? I left after class for a second to get Bella a Hershey's bar in hopes that she'd forgive me for listening in on her in gym and fall completely in love with me. Ugh, I have problems. I am the most pathetic creature to ever exist.
I walked into the cafeteria, glancing over at my siblings. Rosalie was her usual self: annoyed beyond belief and as conceited as ever. Emmett was amused, but slightly concerned as well. Jasper was feeling as tortured and pained as usual, trying to keep his uncontrollable appetite under control. Alice was her usual chipper self with slight worry for...Bella. Bella! Oh, no.
I looked in her direction to see her being harassed by Newton and Yorkie, who has just made her spill her tray and were apologizing frantically.
Bella seemed slightly embarrassed, most likely from the unwanted attention she had drawn to herself, but was still ridiculously kind to those immature brats who did not deserve it.
Eric rammed Mike with his shoulder, pushing him into Bella, causing her to inevitably fall. Damn it!
Not caring who was watching or where I was, I ran over to her from behind, and caught her right before her head smacked the ground. I helped her to her feet and put her slightly behind me before turning on Mike and Eric, glaring angrily at them.
"Cullen, where did you come from?!" Mike demanded.
I didn't need to read his mind to see the fear behind the facade. The same fear that Bella should feel towards me, but couldn't. Or wouldn't allow herself to or something.
'Shut up, Newton,' Eric thought, as he stared at me, terrified of what I would do.
I almost felt bad for him, but Newton's damn arrogance and useless cockiness towards me made me want to rip him from limb to limb and bury the pieces in the four corners of the Earth.
I shook my head and said, coldly, "Get out of here, Newton." Before it's too late. Oh, how I wished I could just punch him, just once.
Mike and Eric easily got the message as if I had said it out loud, and ran off.
Mike smacked Eric's arm and said, "I told you something was wrong with Cullen!" 'I'll bet he does drugs!' Mike thought, hopefully.
'Shut. UP. NEWTON! If he heard you and comes after me, I swear to God, I'll KILL YOU.' Eric thought, angrily.
I stifled a snort at the impossibility of that idea and then turned to face Bella. "Hello, grace." She grimaced and I smiled my crooked smile, "You okay?"
She swallowed loudly, "You're here."
I furrowed my eyebrows, "Where else would I be?"
Her eyes raced across my face and she looked deep in thought. Once again, I tried uselessly to read her mind when Tyler walked up to us and said, "Bella! Are you okay?! Mike and Eric are so immature! 'I can kill them for you!' You want me to--"
I broke him off, laughing uncontrollably, seeing his perception of a fight between him, Newton, and Yorkie. He took them both out easily. I realized that he heard me in enough time to pretend to cough and cover it up.
'Whoa, did Edward Cullen just laugh?!' he thought, before saying, "Hey. Hey...Edward." 'What the hell are you doing here? You got your chance to play Superman; this is my turn.'
I struggled to not let that upset me, forcing a smirk, "Hey. Don't worry; I handled it."
'DAMN IT! Go to hell, Cullen!' Been there and back many times. "Oh." He couldn't hide the disappointment in his voice, "Oh, well. That's...good." He tried to glare at me, but it had no effect on me whatsoever. I had definitely seen worse than that.
But, I figured I better cut the kid some slack. After all, Bella was blowing him for a vampire. Poor guy. I should take the high road in this case.
I took a step back and took Bella's hand, before nodding, "Well, see you."
'Of all the guys in the school, why did Bella have to choose him! He's such a freaking weirdo!' Tyler thought, bitterly, as he watched me lead Bella away.
I was keeping an eye on all the guys' thoughts around us, making sure none were too bad, when Bella reached with her other hand, which was trembling, and placed it on my bicep.
I made to remove it from when my bicep flexed against her hand, causing her to whimper and stagger.
"Careful!" I warned, tightening my hold on her hand, beyond grateful for the excuse to touch her.
I couldn't help but smile. I had never felt so amazing in my life. It was so soothing and...wonderful to be so close to her and know that she wasn't scared of me. I shouldn't view it like this; I knew that, but I couldn't help it. Selfish as it was to keep putting her in such danger time and time again, I couldn't undo what had been done. And now that it was done, I didn't want to go back. Not now, not ever.
Plus, Tyler's damning me to the fiery pits of hell in his head was quite amusing. How little that child truly knew!
"So..." Bella's voice cracked slightly as she spoke, so she cleared her throat, "Where were you?"
"First things first," I said, sitting her down at our usual table and pushing the tray of food that Alice had gotten for me as part of our charade towards her. "Eat."
She looked hesitant, almost upset, as she glared at the tray of food before her. Couldn't say I blamed her; it looked pretty disturbing to me as well.
She shook her head, "No, no...it's...okay. I wasn't hungry anyway."
I couldn't help but wonder if she was only doing this because I was here. A thoughtful gesture, sure, but she couldn't starve herself everytime I was around just out of courtesy.
Despite what I needed to do, I wasn't planning on going anywhere anytime soon. I could stand the horrible stench and constant reek of human food so long as I was with her.
I raised my eyebrows and smirked, amused at the thought, before sitting down in the seat opposite hers.
"Stop that!" She said, irritably.
I furrowed my eyebrows and said, "Stop what?"
"I can't hear people's thoughts; I have no idea if you're making those faces at me or someone's thoughts."
Whoa! She really was paying attention. I shrugged, "Both."
She rolled her eyes and I smiled, "Sorry. I'll stop. Now, you know how frustrating it is for me, not knowing your thoughts."
"Touche." She said, defeatedly.
I smiled and gestured towards the tray again. "Eat."
"I'm not hungry." She repeated.
"Then, why'd you get a tray if you weren't gonna eat?"
"I have no idea, kettle." She said, sarcastically, "Cause you never do that, right?"
I could play games too if she wantd to. I shrugged, "Well, then, I guess I made a mistake."
I pulled out the Hershey's bar and held it out to her. "I was told that humans like chocolate. I figured I'd try to get in your good graces again."
She snatched it and said, while opening it, "You were told right. Human girls, especially." She took a bite before saying, "What do you mean 'good graces'?"
"I figured you were still mad about my listening in on gym. So, I wanted to make up for it."
"You sure do know how to steal a girl's heart," she said, in a joking tone.
I forced a soft chuckle and she shook her head, looking confused yet frustrated.
I wished I could steal her heart. I would keep it safe forever...with my cold, dead shell of a heart...if such a magnificent creature could settle for me. I doubted it, but I couldn't help the little burst of hope that surged through me as she said those words.
"It's a gift." I managed to say, keeping it as light and joking as her words were, with great difficulty.
"As if frequently dazzling everyone in sight isn't enough!"
I sincerely thought about that as she finished the rest of her Hershey's bar, wondering what it was I did exactly that "dazzled" everyone, and hoping desperately that it had the same effect on Bella.
"Thanks." She said, interrupting my thoughts.
"Mm-hm; you know I don't try to, right?"
"Huh?" She asked, sounding almost delirious.
"I don't try to dazzle you." I put a stressed emphasis on the word, but she didn't catch it.
"Good thing, too, cause it works enough without the extra effort."
I smirked apologetically, but it faded instantaneously as Emmett's thoughts interrupted me:
'Yo, little bro. You should bring Bella over to the house tonight. I am dying to meet her. We can watch a movie and hang out. Come on; please, please, please! I swear I'll be good!'
I cast him a glare of protest so quickly that Bella definitely could not have caught it. Then, I stood up and said, "Are you done here?"
She furrowed her eyebrows, clearly confused, "Yeah--yeah, I'm done."
I gestured with my hand for her to follow me and she obliged. "What's up?" She asked, struggling to keep up.
"We'll talk in the car."
"Car? What, what about class?"
I groaned at her determination to be the perfect student, which was a noble thing to do, but right now, we couldn't afford it. "Have I taught you nothing? We'll skip today and I'll let you know what we missed tomorrow. It's one day; no one will know."
"Okay," She agreed, hesitantly.
I opened the door for her and stepped aside to let her leave and then followed her.
"Where are we going?"
"Well, you do need to change. I'll take you home."
She nodded and allowed me to open the car door for her before getting in.
Not even a second later, I was in my seat with the car on. "Hurry up." I said, as she was reaching for her seatbelt.
"Don't rush me." She said, putting it on.
I shook my head irritably, backed out, and we sped off.
