Ruby Oliver

My best friend, Kara, and I were driving back to my house. Kara was staying now officially living with us. Her parents kicked her out of the house a year ago, because they didn’t want her. I have known Kara since I was five, we met in Pre School. Kara’s the only one who knows my dad left us, the only one who knew about Mike and the only one that knows I’m pregnant. She’s got long black hair and blue eyes. She’s kind of a Goth. All she wears is black and she wears fangs.

“Looks like your mom’s home.” Kara said, pointing at our lit up apartment.

“Looks that way.” I muttered, pulling into my parking spot.

“So, when are you going to tell her?” Kara asked, casually.

“I dunno, I was thinking nine months or so.” I shrugged. She laughed and shoved my shoulder.

“Have fun with that. I can see it now. your water will break and you’ll be like ‘Mom, guess what? I’m pregnant and my water just broke, come on!’”

“Who knows, maybe it’ll work.” I laughed.

“Yeah, and maybe it won’t.” she pointed out.

“Why are you so negative?” I asked.

“Look at this outfit,” she said, gesturing to her black Kiss T-shirt, black skinny jeans and black high tops. “Does this outfit say “Rainbow smiles’?”

“No.” I sighed. I grabbed my keys out of my purse as we headed up the stairs to my apartment. We got up there and I opened the door, to see mom and it looked like a five year old sitting on the couch.

“I didn’t know you adopted.” I snorted. She rolled her eyed.

“Ha-ha, very funny, Roo. This is an old friend of mine, Alice.” She told me. “Alice, this is my daughter, Ruby.”

“Hiya!” Alice smiled.

“Hi. Mom, I’m going to my room, come on Kar.” I mumbled, grabbing Kara’s hand and dragging her towards my door.

“Ruby, wait.” Mom sighed. I turned around. Alice’s arm was wrapped around her and she looked like she was about to cry.

“What?” I asked, harsher then I intended.

“Ruby…we’re moving.” She murmured.

“No.” I growled. Not after everything we’ve been threw, we were not moving now!

“Ruby, we’re moving in with Alice and her family.” Why the hell did the name Alice sound so fucking familiar!? And then it dawned on me…

“Your brother is the bastard that left her, isn’t he?” I hissed. Alice looked taken back, but she nodded. “There’s no possible way I’m going there!”

“Ruby!” mom yelled.

“No! If it wasn’t for him, you wouldn’t be in this whole damn mess!” I screamed at her.

“It’s not his fault!” she argued.

“Like hell it isn’t! If he hadn’t had left, you wouldn’t have married dad! Everything happened after you married dad!” I exclaimed.

“Exactly! It’s your father’s fault!” she screamed.

“Maybe if he hadn’t left you wouldn’t have married dad!” I pointed out.

“Ruby Olivia Oliver! Were going whether you like it or not! We already packed! Were leaving tonight.” She sighed.

“Can Kara come?” I asked after a few minutes of silence.

“Yes.” she smiled, obviously happy I was cooperating.

“Fine, whatever, lets go then.” I muttered, grabbing my purse off the empty counter and stalking out of the apartment.
