When I got home I went straight to bed. I didn’t talk to anyone about where I’d been. I simply nodded my head in acknowledgement then continued on my way.
They left me alone, they knew better than to annoy me when I was in a mood. The last time, the neighbors had called the police because they thought we were being attacked by someone.
The next morning I woke up in a better mood and I stayed in that mood until lunch time.
“Well?” Eric asked nudging my arm and nodding his head towards where the Cullens sat (they were still staring at me confused). “Aren’t you going to ask them?”
“Ask them what?” I had never agreed to talk to them.
“About the meeting,” he looked at me pointedly again.
“I told you,” I turned my head away and lowered my voice so only he could hear, “I refuse to talk with them.”
“Fine.” Eric stood up and, after throwing me an exasperated and annoyed look, crossed the cafeteria to where the Cullens sat.
They talked for a moment before the Cullens stood up, nodded their heads, and then filed out of the cafeteria. Eric waved us over.
“What’s up sweetie?” Elsbeth questioned when we reached him, entwining her hand in his.
“We’re going to meet with them now, they said they had to go home early anyways; something about the sun?” he looked at me confused and I shook my head, letting him know I would explain later. “Anyways, they said Bella would know the way to their house.” They all turned to look at me.
“Yea, I know the way.” I took the keys and headed to the car. We arrived at their house quickly, I remembered the way perfectly.
The second I stepped out of the car, two cold arms were around my waist.
“Bella!” Alice squealed, hugging me closer, “I’ve missed you SO
much! I’m so sorry about everything! I told him! I told him he was making-“
I cut her off there. “Alice, stop, really. I don’t want to here it.”
“But Bella!” She looked up at me with sad eyes. “I really am sorry! Please just forgive me!”
I couldn’t resist her face, “Fine, I forgive you Alice.”
“Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!” She squeezed me for one more second than grabbed my hand and dragged me toward the house, my family followed behind. “Esme will be so happy to see you! You do forgive her and everyone right?” She turned her head to look at me.
“All but one.” I mumbled quietly.
“I understand.” She looked at me sympathetically, probably seeing the pain in my eyes. “Come on!”
Alice pulled me through the front door, “Esme! Emmett! Carlisle! Jasper! Rosalie!” She called, I noticed she skipped one person, and seconds later I was being spun around.
“Bella!” Emmett stopped spinning me and pulled me into a tight hug, “I’ve missed you so much! I’m so sorry about everything! He’s just so darn stubborn and-“ he stopped talking suddenly, probably receiving a warning glare from Alice.
“I missed you to Emmett.” I said pulling away. the rest of the family came in now, Carlisle approached me first.
“Bella, we’ve all missed you so much,” he gave me a hug and then stepped back. Esme was next, pulling me into a motherly hug.
“I’m so happy to see you dear.” Then she moved away to stand next to Carlisle. Jasper and Rosalie hovered unsurely behind where she had been.
Jasper approached me first.
“Bella, um, about your birthday, I’m so-“
“It’s fine Jasper, it’s my fault.” I cut him off, “don’t try apologizing about it.” He nodded his head, and I moved over and hugged him tightly. He froze. “It’s okay Jasper, you can’t hurt me in anyway now, well physically at least.”
The Cullens looked at me in confusion.
“We’ll explain later.” Eric amended.
Rosalie spoke then, moving towards me slowly and hesitantly, “Bella, I’m happy to see you. I’m sorry I was so mean to you before. I-I had my reasons.”
“I understand.” I gave her a small hug and, surprisingly she hugged me back. I gestured to my family, “These are Lilia and her husband Jason, and Elsbeth and her husband Eric. This is Carlisle, Esme, Emmett, Rosalie, Jasper and Alice.” I purposely left out Edward, they would know who he was.
“Well, why don’t we go and sit down?” Esme gestured to the couches scattered about the big open space.
Once everyone was situated Carlisle spoke, “So, what exactly has happened to you Bella? You certainly aren’t a vampire because your heart is still beating, but your eyes, they’re violet, and your skin is pale…” he trailed off looking at me critically.
Eric glanced at me, silently questioning me if I would tell them the story or not. I nodded my head; I was going to tell them, I would struggle through it though. Maybe it would be good for me.
“Well, um when you left I was kind of like a zombie. After the first few weeks Charlie couldn’t take it, so Renee came up to take me to Florida with her. I refused; well actually I threw a fit that scared her to death, so she left.” I took a deep breath and closed my eyes for a second, I was extremely aware that Edward was, and had been, leaning against the wall near the stairs watching me ever since I walked in the door. Lilia squeezed my hand reassuringly, “I was walking in the forest one day, when I met Laurent.” A chorus of gasps came from the Cullens, along with a growl from Edward.
“He told me Victoria wanted revenge, she wanted to kill me, ‘mate for mate’ was what he said. Anyway, he was thirsty so he was going to kill me then without waiting for Victoria. But right before he lunged at me these huge, and I mean huge
, wolves came out of the trees. He ran and they followed.”
“Oh my goodness, I never knew…” Carlisle trailed off, Edward growled in response to Carlisle’s thoughts. Everyone looked at them in confusion while I grew angry. What right did Edward have to be upset when my life was in danger? He gave up that right when he left, he wasn’t allowed to! Why did he care anyway? He left
Carlisle spoke then, breaking me from my thoughts, “I never knew the werewolves were back,” several gasps echoed around the room.
“How do you know Carlisle?” Esme asked confused.
“Why else would a mature vampire be scared of large wolves?”
“I suppose… anyway continue Bella.” They turned their attention back to me.
“Well, I got really scared after that, I jumped at the tiniest sounds. Charlie told me Renee wanted me to move to Portland with my ‘cousins’,” I gestured to Lilia and Elsbeth, “and my Aunt Peggy. The night I arrived they explained everything to me. Speaking of which didn’t you see me coming Alice?”
“I wasn’t looking, someone
told me not to.” She shot a glance at Edward, who I had effectively avoided looking at, until now. He looked the same, as he did that first fateful day of biology all those years ago. Angular features, gorgeous topaz eyes, and beautiful bronze hair; I couldn’t help but stare; luckily Alice spoke again breaking me from my ogling. “What did they tell you Bella?”
“Oh, um… well we’re-“ I gestured to myself and my family, “we’re fairywitches.”
