It was a gloomy day here in Forks. But then again, when is it not? But I’m not just talking weather wise. I waited for Bella in her room, for her to get ready for school. When she came out of the bathroom, I was in for a surprise. There was my Bella, looking completely depressed.
I assumed she would be thrilled; it was the last day of school. But no-
She wore a black sweater, the sleeves covering half her hands. She wore black skinny jeans, something she never wore. She had on heavy eyeliner and she was wearing her old black converses. My Bella looked dead.
“Bella, what are you wearing?” I breathed. She had an emotionless look.
“What? You don’t like it?” she scoffed, in monotone. “Deal.”
That was odd. Bella never told me to deal. She never wore clothes like that either. I had to admit, last night she was rather quite, but I thought nothing of it.
She grabbed her bag from the rocking chair and kicked her bedroom door open, stomping down the stairs. I climbed out the window and quickly got in my car.
What is going on? My Bella never acted this way. Did I do something wrong?
Bella cam stomping down the stairs as I sat at the table, drinking my coffee. She was dressed in all black, looking dead as ever. Almost as dead as when Cullen left her…he didn’t do it again did he? Nah, he was here last night. He was smiling at her, everything was fine. But then again, so was everything last time.
“Bella?” I asked, hesitantly. She turned my way and gave me a completely blank stare.
“Yes?” Yikes. I knew that voice. That dead, cold, monotonous voice. She used that when Cullen left her. Right now that’s that only thing I can relate this to…
“Oh, nothing sweetie, have a good day at school.” I told her as she stalked outside to Cullen’s car. I thought back to when else she could have acted like this. Was it a phase? She seemed fine last night, just a little quite.
She had that stare…that stare wasn’t there when that kid left. It was there when…
I jumped up from the old rickety chair and made a mad dash for the calendar. I ran a finger roughly over the page, finally recalling the day.
The day Jason died.
Oh dear god, how did I forget? Poor Bella, my baby, she must be a wreck! I wonder if I should let her skip school…but it’s the last day. And she’s already left.
Oh lord. Save me now. Jason, my fun loving son, died this day, to years ago. He was Bella’s best friend in the world; he pushed her to pursue her dream of singing. She went to a music camp in Los Angeles. But then when it was over, she came here. She hasn’t gone back and it worries me. She was so happy there and when she came back. Last year when it was this day, Cullen was gone, she was already like this.
Bella and I got out of the Volvo, to see my brothers and sisters waiting outside the school. When we got to them, Emmett laughed; at what I’m assuming was Bella’s attire. She gave him the same blank stare she gave me. He immediately stopped and Alice shot me a sad look.
It’s bad, she thought, She’ll tell us soon, never fear.
I nodded at her slightly. Emmett gave me a confused look. His thoughts were still centered on Bella’s outfit.
“So…Bella…that’s quite a get up.” Jasper said, uncertainly. Bella turned to him and I saw her ease slightly.
“It’s out of respect.” She muttered as she proceeded to walk off to homeroom. I turned to Jasper with question in my eyes. He shrugged but in his mind I saw immense pain.
We went off to homeroom. Alice, Emmett and I had it with Tyler and he was whispering about something with a few other guys on the football team.
“…Yeah and she’s decked out in all black, its creepy man…” I heard him say. I knew from there he was talking to Bella. I saw her in his mind, walking past him into homeroom earlier.
What is bothering her? I asked Alice this low enough that humans couldn’t hear.
“She’ll tell us soon, Edward. Leave her be.” She warned me. I nodded at her vague warning, and paid attention to announcements.
