On Tuesday after school, Edward and I went to Tillicum Park, and did our homework there. The day was overcast, but thankfully not raining. After an hour or two, we were finished and walking hand in hand through the forest.

As I related what Attalia had told me at the sleepover, Edward had become more and more angry. I hadn’t seen him this upset since that night in Port Angeles. We walked along in companionable silence until someone crossed our path. It was Jake!

“Jacob!” I called happily. Edward groaned and wrinkled up his nose as if smelling something foul.

Jacob had always been so nice and I hadn’t seen him since prom last year! He was so down to earth. With all that was happening in life right now, I needed someone like him to talk to.

Jake answered, “Bella, Bloodsucker, good afternoon. I need to talk to the leech now.” He reluctantly turned to Edward.

“Does she know?” Jacob asked Edward flicking his head in my direction.

“Yes, she knows everything.” Edward answered. Jacob grimaced in pain.

“I’ve come to deliver a warning. Sam ordered me to say that the treaty is still in force and if any human suddenly disappears, we’ll know whose fault it was,” he glanced in my direction at this point, “and we’ll be ready to take care of the situation.” Edward stiffened.

I was mad. Since when did Jacob believe in the old Quileute legends? How dare he decide my future for me? “Jake, what are you talking about? “ I asked in complete frustration.

“Bella, you know exactly what I’m talking about! I’m talking about…you know what I’m not going to even bother telling you.”

Jake turned back into the woods and ran until I couldn’t see him anymore. I turned to Edward and asked, “What was he talking about?”

Edward sighed and said, “I’ll tell you when we arrive at my house. I need to explain to the rest of the family, especially Alice and Jasper. “

The ride was quiet, but not relaxing. I was way to tense and worried about what Jacob had said. We walked into the house and had the family gather at the dining room table for a family meeting.

“Edward, what is this about?” Emmet asked.

“Whoa, Bella you are really tense you want me to fix that?” Jasper sounded concerned.

“Bella I can’t see your transformation anymore.” Alice was nigh on to a panic attack, “Did something happen between you and Edward?”

Carlisle called the meeting to order and turned it over to Edward. “As Bella and I were walking in the park this afternoon, we ran into Jacob Black, great-grandson of Ephraim Black. He told us that the treaty was still in force and if any of us bite a human, or one mysteriously disappears, they will hunt us down.”

I was confused. “But Edward, vampires are indestructible. What are we worrying about? I don’t understand.”

Carlisle was the one to explain, “About 70 years ago, we had just settled near Hoquiam. One day, while hunting we came across giant wolves. However we soon learned that these were not ordinary wolves. Your people call them werewolves.”

Alice, Jasper and I gasped, “Werewolves?!”

Carlisle continued, “Yes, Werewolves. They were ready to tear us to bits, for the werewolves’ only enemy is the vampire, but we convinced them that we were harmless to the humans and soon we signed a treaty. We can’t go on their land, kill, or bite a human. In return, they would protect our secret and keep the peace.”

An astonished silence prevailed for a good five minutes before Edward broke it, “What are we going to do? They know that we are here, and will kill us if we try to turn Bella. However, if we don’t change her, Bella will kill us. It is an impasse.” We smiled at each other and began to laugh tentatively. I couldn’t help but remember all of our conversations about impasses from last year. What a stressful time in our relationship that had been!

“Well, I think that we should tell Charlie about Edward and Bella as we are leaving, go to Alaska where we will be slightly more protected, and turn Bella into a vampire there.” I contemplated Esme’s idea and decided that it was a good plan.

“Alright, then it is decided,” Carlisle continued, “Edward you need to run Bella home, before her father comes here. Isn’t her curfew in 40 minutes?”

We climbed into the car and because of Edward’s crazy driving skills, were home with 25 minutes to spare. Charlie was watching sports as we came in, and welcomed us home. We made dinner together and did the dishes, all the while worrying about the werewolf problem.
