The cafeteria was crowded, and as they rounded the corner -- Tommy pushing the wheelchair and Jude, obviously, riding in it -- she spotted the gorgeous son of the also gorgeous male doctor that had treated her. He was holding a small, very beautiful girl with long, mahogony curls that bounced when she laughed, which she was doing quite a bit of.

Tommy noticed her gawking and smirked, a hint of jealousy in his tone as he asked, "What are you staring at, Big Eyes?"

"Why does it matter?" Jude snapped before closing her jaw tightly and looking up at him, wide-eyed. "Oh, I'm sorry Tommy. I think the pain meds have me a little bit messed up right now.."

He smiled lightly, but Jude could see the cold glint in his eyes that meant he was angry. Carefully, he pushed her forward and angled her chair towards the table in a way that she couldn't see the gorgeous man -- Edward, she thought -- anymore. "I was just curious. No need to get too excited, Jude."

She rolled her eyes and stared at the table, not willing to admit how much it hurt. Sure, he had said that he loved her. And sure, she had thought he seemed jealous, but she could have been wrong. And he could have lied about loving her just to keep her happy while she was in the hospital.

"I'm going to go get you something to eat." His walk was brisk and Jude couldn't help but notice the muscles in his shoulders that moved as he walked away and stood in line. As she tried to tear her eyes off of him, she noticed Sadie and Kwest sitting at a table a few feet away, engaged in what looked like an intense conversation. Jude debated attempting to get their attention and call them over to her and Tommy's table, but she thought better of it. When Sadie was angry, she knew better than to interrupt. She wanted some alone time, anyway.

Before she knew it Tommy was back, a tray of somewhat good looking food in his hands. He looked apologetically at her and said, "Sorry, girl. It was the best they had."

Jude smiled and put her hand over his on the tray, squeezing gently. "Thank you."

Tommy looked at her hand and smiled, leaning over to kiss her gently on the temple before moving his hand out from beneath hers and winding their fingers together. Jude's heart skipped a beat, but she tried not to show the reaction on her face. They were starting over, and she had pretend like nothing had ever happened between them. Besides, he had done things like that far before they had officially gotten together, right?

"So," he said after a moment, staring at their hands together. "I was thinking that maybe Ali and Sadie and Kwest should go home. Ali needs some stability and living her life out of a hotel room and a hospital really isn't good for her."

Jude sighed, picking up a piece of what was supposed to be roast beef and popping it into her mouth, thinking as she chewed. "You're right. But it'll be tough for me to be away from her. Especially now... I mean, they don't know where he is. What if he shows up? I don't know if I want to take that risk. At least here she's protected."

"Do you really think Chris is going to go all the way to Canada, Jude?" Tommy quirked an eyebrow and watched Jude's eyebrows pull together. He attempted to smooth them out with his fingertips, but she just swatted his hand away.

"It's possible, Tommy. He could find out that my sister took her there and he could go there just for her. I don't want that happening."

Tommy sighed. "Babe, listen. I know that you're worried. But it's really not healthy for her to be living like this. I think she needs to get away from this hospital for awhile. I mean, how would you feel if you were stuck in a hospital with your very hurt mother? At her age, she's probably at least a little bit scared, don't you think?"

"I know," Jude whispered. "But so am I."

Tommy turned her wheelchair and pulled her gently into his lap, careful not to touch where he knew any of the bandages were. "I promise you that nothing will happen to Ali. Sadie and Kwest will take her home, and I'm sure even Shane will help out if I ask her to. She really does love Ali, and she wouldn't take our breakup out on your kid."

Jude nestled her head into the crook of his neck, and smirked as she heard his breathing hitch slightly. "You're right. Should we talk to Kwest and Sadie?"

Tommy unconsciously rubbed his thumb in small circles on Jude's hip, making her skin tingle. As he thought, Jude closed her eyes and listened to his deep breathing.

"They already know," he admitted after a few moments of silence. "We talked while you were sleeping last night. I thought it would be best for her to begin with. She needs to be safe, I care about her and you too much to let anything get in the way of her growing up right."

Her throat was dry as she tried to speak, his kindness and love for the child he had only met yesterday overwhelming her. Shaking her head, Jude leaned up and placed a lingering kiss on Tommy's cheek before whispering, "Thank you."

Before she could lower her head back to his neck, Tommy put his finger under her chin and tilted her head back up. She stared at him, wide-eyed, before licking her lips. Jude's eyes darted down and up quickly, and that was all the permission that Tommy needed as he lowered his lips to hers. The kiss was gentle at first, and then slowly turned bruising as all the pent up emotions went flying between the two. And then, as soon as it had begun, it stopped. Jude pulled away and stared at her hands, her lower lip quivering. Tommy longed to kiss those lips until all her sadness went away, but he knew that she had something to say, so he waited.

Eventually, she looked up at him, her eyes full of unshed tears. "Tommy, we can't do this."

"Why not, Jude?" Tommy demanded. "After so long, all I want to do is be with you. You're my girl. Always have been, and always will be." As Tommy's fingers lingered around his neck, Jude noticed for the first time a silver chain that had not been there before. He was never one for jewelry, so this surprised her until she watched him pull the necklace out from where it lay beneath his shirt. There, on the silver chain, was the engagement ring Tommy had given Jude so long ago. Her throat closed and she had to choke back a sob, as she watched him carefully detach the ring from the chain and slip it back on her finger. "Please."

She shook her head and closed her eyes, willing the tears not to fall but not caring when they did. Slowly, as her chest seemed to shatter under the pain of it, Jude lifted her hand and pulled the ring off, placing it in Tommy's palm. "No. I can't. I'm sorry."

He stared at the ring for a moment before nodding, his jaw clenching and unclenching at random. "Are you still hungry?" Jude shook her head no and he carefully deposited her tray in the garbage before walking back to Jude. "I need to talk to Kwest and Sadie for a minute. Do you want to go back to the room or wait here?"

Jude debated for a minute, surprised at his calm demeanor and the rapid change in conversation. As she thought, she looked around the room and absentmindedly noted that Edward and the beautiful child were no longer in the room. Her thoughts were too preoccupied with trying not to cry in front of Tommy for her to concentrate on the fact very long, and she sighed, taking a deep breath. "I think I should go back to the room."

Tommy nodded curtly before walking behind Jude and pushing he wheelchair quickly from the cafeteria. When they reached her room, he picked her up and set her gently on the bed, careful not to look into her eyes. "I'll be back later."

She simply nodded before watching him walk out the door, and she couldn't help but notice the extra effort he took not to slam the door on his way out.

"So you talked to Tommy?" Sadie asked.

After her little argument with Tommy, he hadn't really been back to the room for any considerable amount of time. He checked in every so often, but a few hours ago he had taken Ali out to get some real food and to go play at the local park for awhile. Jude didn't expect them back anytime before dark, so she was able to relax a little bit. Now, however, as she noticed the sun slowly slip behind the tall buildings outside her small window, her nerves were growing steadily.

"Yeah," Jude said, smiling sadly. "And I told him that you guys should take Ali... it'll be safer in the end."

Sadie squeezed Jude's hand gently and then bent down to kiss her on the cheek. Kwest nodded and smiled, wrapping his arm around Sadie affectionately. She looked at him, a playful scowl on her face before she leaned over and kissed him gingerly on the lips.

Jude coughed uneasily and started to play with her fingers. "So, did Tommy tell you what else we talked about?"

Kwest nodded. "Nope. What?"

Just as she was about to open her mouth, Jude was interrupted by her room door swinging open gently to a very disgruntled Tommy, holding not just Ali's hand but the small girl's hand from the cafeteria earlier. Behind Tommy trailed Edward, the beautiful man who also seemed to be the young girl's father.

"Oh, hello," Jude managed, blushing. Sadie smiled knowingly and chuckled to herself as Jude continued, "Who's this?"

It was Edward who answered, his voice so angelic that Jude felt compelled to listen. "This, is Renesmee, but we call her Nessie. She's my daughter. We ran into your daughter down in the playroom and she insisted that we had to meet you. Obviously, we've already met."

"But Nessie and mommy no meet," Ali interrupted. "Mommy, this is Nessie. She my best fran."

Tommy lifted Ali carefully up onto Jude's bed, avoiding her questioning eyes, as Edward picked up Nessie and set her swiftly on his shoulders. She responded with a squeal and then started giggling as Ali started making funny faces at her.

Jude pulled Ali onto her lap and gave her a warm hug before kissing her forehead gently. "Well, it's nice to meet you, Nessie."

"It's nice to meet you too, Miss Harrison."

Jude was stunned at the child's perfect grammar and pronunciation already, and her jaw hung slightly agape. Edward's eyes tightened slightly and he turned his head to whisper something into his daughter's ear that Jude was not able to hear before turning back to her and smiling. "Nessie has always been very bright... My wife is smart, and my family isn't exactly lacking in that area, either."

Jude smiled and nodded. "I can see that."

Tommy, who had been silent up until now, suddenly cleared his throat and looked up at Edward with a poorly disguised scowl. "I didn't bring them here just so you could meet Nessie..."

"Right, I'm terribly sorry for the inconvenience of having my daughter here, but your doctor is busy in the ER at the moment and I've been sent to perform your nightly check up. Just a few things, but it might be prudent for the others to leave the room. Nessie can go with your daughter if you'd like her to leave, also. I'll have to change the dressings on the more private areas of your body."

Before Jude could respond, Tommy stated roughly, "I'm staying."

Jude shook her head. "No, Tommy. Leave. I need you to watch Ali for me anyway."

"No, Jude. I'm staying. Sadie and Kwest can watch her, right?"

Sadie and Kwest looked at eachother before Kwest sighed and nodded, lifting the small child off of Jude. "Right."

Slowly, all of the bystanders flowed out of the room and closed the door quietly behind them. When all that was left was Jude, Tommy, and Edward, Jude settled nervously back onto her pillow and closed her eyes. She heard both Tommy and Edward chuckle under their breaths at her reaction to having to see the open wounds, but as soon as Edward pulled off the bandage that lay on her forhead, she heard Tommy's audible gasp. At the same time, Jude felt the cool air from her room hit the cut and she cried out softly, the stinging pain hurting worse than she imagined. Almost immediately, Tommy was next to her, and rather than pushing him away so he wouldn't feel an unnecesary hope that things COULD go back to the way they were, she gripped his hand and pulled it to her cheek. Each time Edward swiped the cut with whatever he was using to clean it, Jude winced and squeezed Tommy's hand harder. He would whisper reassurances in her ear, but a few times she also noticed his breathing hitch. Finally, she was able to open her eyes and release Tommy's hand, as Edward had bandaged her head and moved to a few of the old and infected lacerations on her stomach.

"Sorry about that," she panted, her head throbbing gently but not enough to really cause a problem.

"Don't apologize, girl," Tommy said. "I'm always here for you."

She nodded and winced as Edward cleaned and bandaged the last of the wounds on her stomach. "Miss Harrison, I'll have to move to the one on your chest now. It may hurt worse than these last ones, so be prepared."

As soon as Edward lifted the hospital gown from her chest, Tommy hissed. Jude tried to squeeze his hand again and reassure him, but he pulled it away. It was silent for a few minutes, the only sound in the room that of Edward working carefully on her wound, when Tommy finally spoke. "He did this to you?"

"Tommy, it's not that bad, really..." She trailed off, not sure what to say.

Tommy closed his eyes and took a deep breath. "I can't believe I let you go. If I had just fought for you to stay-"

"I wouldn't have, anyway," Jude interrupted. "And then I would have left with us on much worse terms."

He didn't answer, but this time when Jude took his hand, he didn't complain. She had been so distracted in her conversation with Tommy, that Jude was surprised to see Edward finally backing up and smiling at her.

"Everything is healing nicely," he said. "You may be able to leave sooner than originally planned, but we'll have to see."

Jude nodded and thanked him for all his help before she rolled over so that she could see Tommy better. His eyes were pained and when she managed to capture his gaze, he looked away quickly.

"About earlier," Jude began. "I hope you understand why we can't do this. Not yet. I'm not even divorced yet, Tommy. I don't want to end up hurting you or Ali by getting too involved with you while I'm still married to her father." Slowly, she brought her hand up to his cheek and cupped it gently, rubbing her thumb across his cheekbone. He caught her hand and brought it to his lips, kissing her palm gently before twisting their fingers together and laying their conjoined hands down on the arm rest of the bed.

"I understand. I just... wish it didn't have to be this way. I wish we didn't have to start over -- that we could just pick up where we left off."

Jude nodded as a single tear slid down her cheek. "I know, babe. I know." Ever so slowly, despite the sting in her side as she did so, Jude twisted herself so that her face was a few inches from Tommy's. Her lips touched his cheek gently before she pulled back and placed them softly on his lips. An apology and a promise, flowing from her lips in the way the words never could.

"I love you, Jude Harrison," Tommy whispered.

"I love you too, Little Tommy Q."
