Emmet laughed. “When the vampires leave town, you go hang out with the next mythical creatures you can find. Very human, Bella,”

A strangled cry came from above. I looked around wildly, trying to find the source. The Cullen’s tensed, and Alice shifted slightly closer to me.

And suddenly, there he was. In all his beauty - his terrifying, angry, beauty. Standing at the foot of the stairs, his butterscotch eyes were shooting daggers at his family, rotating from Alice to Esme to Emmet. “Why, would you allow her to be with that mongrel?” I noticed that his eyes never landed on my face.

No matter what Alice said, there was no way that he could still love me.

Jasper winced. “Edward, please calm down. I really want to strangle something right now,” Edward whipped his eyes to him.

“I…sorry,” He mumbled, his rage subsiding. He slowly let his gaze travel from Jasper’s face to mine.

Time stopped.

Nobody moved. Not even me. My shallow breath was the only sound to be heard.

His face was so familiar. I recognized each curve of his chin, each furrow in his brow, the deep eyes, the cool, perfect lips…

The phone rang, and time continued. Esme ran to answer it, Emmet and Jasper picked up controllers to their video game, Rosalie began inspecting her nails, and Carlisle closed his eyes and leaned his head back.

Edward’s face, which had been glued on mine, turned reluctantly towards Esme, his mouth turning down in a grimace.

“Bella, dear, you have a call,” Esme said, motioning me to come over.

I hopped up from my safe place next to Alice and walked quickly towards the phone on the wall, not looking at Edward as I brushed by. I could feel him stiffen as our shoulders lightly touched.

“Hello?” I said once the phone was lifted to my ear.

“Bella! Weren’t you going to call me?” Jacob’s worried voice came through the speaker.

“I’m sorry! I kind of lost track of time. Wait…what time is it anyways?” I looked around to find that there weren’t any clocks to glance at.

“It’s 10:30…Charlie called here, wondering where you were. I told him you just left here,” Jacob informed me.

“Thanks so much. I don’t know how I would’ve explained my being…well, here,”

“Are you okay?” He asked.

“Yeah,” I said, “I’m fine. Well, I guess I’ve gotta go. I’ll call you when I get home.”

I gently placed the phone back on its stand, and turned to face the room.

“Don’t leave yet, Bella,” Alice said her large eyes sad.

“Sorry, Alice, Charlie was wondering where I was. I’d better get home soon.” I replied.

I headed for the door. “Okay, well, night guys. See you later?” I said, although it sounded more like a question.

“I’ll see you at school tomorrow, remember?” Alice said.

Jasper grinned. “Guess that goes for me, too. See you,” He nodded his head.

“I…” Edward began. His eyes, which had been staring at the floor by his feet, looked up into my face, once again dazzling me. “I’ll see you tomorrow.” His velvet voice finished quietly.

Esme hugged me tightly. “Please, come over soon. I need your opinion on some paint colors.”

“Sure thing. Bye guys,” I waved at the room at large, and hurried outside.

Once I was in the safety of my truck, I let out a breath of air. “Okay,” I said, steadying myself. I put the truck in reverse and headed home.

“Hey Dad,” I called as I opened the front door.

“At Jake’s again? Are you two, what’s the phrase…‘going steady’?” Came Charlie’s voice from the kitchen.

I blushed, even though he couldn’t see me. “Yeah, Dad…”

“Really? That’s great! He’s such a good kid, Bells,” He said. As I entered the kitchen, I saw that Charlie was sitting at the table, a nearly empty box of pepperoni pizza laying on the table.

“Dad, did you get a whole pizza all for yourself?” I said warningly.

“No…some is for you, Bella,” He said nervously.

“What have I said about eating pizza? It’s not healthy. You should’ve called me earlier; I could’ve made you some dinner.” I said warily. We had been over this before.

“I didn’t want to bother you,” Charlie said, raising his eyebrows. Wait, was my dad hinting…that Jacob and I…

“Ugh, Dad!” I complained. He started laughing.

“Just saying,” He said.

“Whatever. I’ve got to call Jacob – mind getting out of the kitchen?” I said, making no attempt to be polite.

“Sure thing, honey,” Charlie said, patting me on the shoulder as he passed.

I sighed and picked the phone up from off the hook and dialed the Black’s number, preparing myself for answering all of the questions about the Cullen’s that I was sure to receive.

“Edward?” I called, reaching forward to touch him. Facing away from me, he was looking into the wind, staring coldly down to the water below the cliff.

“Edward, please, look at me,” His face turned slowly to meet my gaze, and I screamed. His eyes were a deep, terrifying burgundy. He smiled grimly. “Love, you chose your path. Be with him. And I'll choose my path," His soft voice was chilling.

“I…I didn’t choose to be left!” I shouted at him, anger building up inside me. “I didn’t ask for you to break my heart. I didn’t want to have to be fixed by Jacob. It was entirely your fault!”

He looked pained. “Isabella,” He whispered. “Run.”
“Wha-” I gasped as a monstrous wolf barreled past me. The russet wolf growled at the vampire, who in turn snarled. They leapt, aiming at each other’s throats.
