I sped into my room and slammed the door behind me so that no one could give me crap about this. I quickly laid Bella on the bed, pulling the covers over her, tucking her in, and kissed her forehead before pushing her hair back behind her ear for her.
"Mm..." she mumbled, deliriously, leaning instinctively into my caress, reaching for my hand. "Edward?"
I smiled at the sound of her voice saying my name. I would never get over how amazing that was...it was the best feeling int he world to hear my name coming the lips of an angel...my angel.
I took her hand and kissed it softly.
"I love you," she said, softly, with a smile.
"I love you...my angel." I whispered, as her smile widened.
I sighed regretfully and placed her hand on her stomach, trailing my hand up in between her breasts to cup her face in my hand and lean down to plant a soft kiss on her lips.
Then, I left to go talk to Esme, hating having to leave Bella's side.
I got to the living room and Emmett said, "Geez, Edward, way to tornado the living room; what's the rush?"
Sure enough, the living room was trashed from my running through it. Oops. Oh, well. Emmett was the only one it really seemed to bother.
"Nothing." I said, defensively.
"Where's Bella?" Alice asked, looking behind me, looking for her.
"She's sleeping. She's in my room."
"Edward, did you--oh." Alice saw my decision in the meadow, forcing herself to ignore it. "My God, Edward!" She reprimanded, "What is the matter with you? Ever hear of a little thing called 'privacy'?"
"Drop it, Alice." I warned.
Emmett's face lit up in understanding, "Ohh..." he taunted, "Way to go, Edward! She still naked in there; cause I think I might have left something in your room--" he broke off to snort and pretended to walk off toward my room.
"Emmett!" I grabbed his arm, "Knock it off."
'Oh, my God,' Alice thought, as she rolled her eyes and walked out of the living room. 'Have fun with him, Edward.'
Jasper's thoughts were reproaching Emmett as he sighed, "Edward, do you need me around ; cause if not--"
"No, go ahead." I said, not taking my eyes off of Emmett, "You need to hunt."
Jasper followed Alice out, thinking, 'I've got 50 bucks for you, man.'
I smirked and Emmett rolled his eyes. Rosalie had been ignoring us up until Emmett said that and now she was glaring at him.
Emmetts' thoughts were revolving around sex--as per usual--as he said: "Come on, Edward, there's no way I would want to see Bella naked; I have more pride than that. Besides, Rose is--okay, so I'm a little intrigued, but I--"
He got cut off by me and Rosalie hitting the back of his head at the same time.
Up until that, Rosalie had been thinking: 'Edward, I swear to God, if you even think about hurting him, I will kill you, you pathetic little--EMMETT!'
That was when she lunged for him, just as angry at his sexual inuendos as I was.
OW!" Emmett said, with a laugh, "I was kidding, Rose; lay off."
Rosalie scoffed and spun on her heel, stalking off with all the grace in the world, her hair bouncing as she walked.
Emmett grimaced, 'Sorry, dude. I was so kidding.' Then, he went after Rosalie, saying, "Oh, come on, baby; you know I was kidding! Rose?"
Rosalie slammed the front door and Emmett ran through it, breaking it.
"Damn it!" But, he kept running, eager to catch up to her.
"What happened?" Esme asked, as her and Carlisle emerged from the stairway.
I rolled my eyes, "Emmett got Rosalie mad and then decided to take it out on the door." I pointed behind me to the now shattered door.
Esme gasped, panicked, "Oh, no!" She left Carlisle's side and went to examine the door, her thoughts concerned with Emmett. "Is Emmett okay?"
"Emmett?!" I asked, incredulously, "I'm more concerned about the door. Poor thing didn't do anything to him." I shook my head, in disbelief that she would even give him second thought, knowing he wasn't in the least bit hurt.
Carlisle sighed, "And the living room?"
"I'll take care of it," I said, hoping he wouldn't press for more information.
For some reason, Carlisle was the one person I could never lie to. I hated that he knew me so well.
"What happened with Emmett and Rosalie?" Carlisle asked.
Damn it! I couldn't catch a break. "Emmett was being an immature pig and Rosalie got pissed off and left so he went after her."
"What did Emmett do?" Carlisle asked.
I shifted uncomfortably, "Please do not ask that question." I said, not wanting to deal with that right now.
"Is it Bella?" Esme asked, approaching me.
I nodded, "Kinda, sorta."
"How's she's doing?" Carlisle asked, placing a comforting hand on my shoulder. 'If you don't want to tell us what happened, Edward, that's your choice to make; it's none of our business.' He thought.
I couldn't help but smile at that and nodded slightly, "She's...okay. She's dealing rather well. Really well. It's quite surprising."
"No, it's not." He shook his head, "She's the strongest person I've ever known...and with you by her side...she's practically indestrucible."
I grimaced, "You sure about that? I wouldn't go so far as to say that; I mean, how many encounters with death has she had this year alone?"
Carlisle chuckled softly, unable to control himself, but immediately sobered up. "That's not the strength I was referring to. It's her inner strength that exceeds all strength. That is the same strength that she has used time and time again to ensure your safety and happiness. Edward, we might be capable of stopping cars with our bare hands or running so fast that we cannot be detected, but I assure you, without our inner strength, we are nothing. And her inner strength...inevitably makes her everything. She is an amazing girl."
I smiled and nodded, "Tell me something I don't know. She is far greater than amazing."
'She could never do it if it wasn't for you.' He thought.
"As is her fiance," Esme said, struggling to control her enthusiasm, "We are so happy for you, son. You have finally found everything you've been looking for."
"And more," I corrected, "I feel like I will never deserve her...she is so much more magnificent than I could ever be."
"I know how you feel." Carlisle said, looking to Esme, who looked back at him and smiled.
"Magnificence...is in the eye of the beholder..." she said, softly, humbly.
I looked away, not wanting to interrupt their intimate moment. I would always admire their endless love and respect for one another. Now that I knew how they felt, I understood completely.
Carlilsle hugged Esme from behind and kissed her temple as she leaned into him.
What used to be unbearable for me to see was now the most beautiful thing in the world. I understood their constant need to be with one another now, because it was the same way for me. Even the smallest second away from Bella was pain so excruciating, I could hardly bear it.
After a moment, Esme pulled reluctantly out of Carlisle's embrace and said, "Edward, I almost forgot. I ordered this for you and Bella--it arrived just yesterday. I hope she likes it."
She pulled a small package out of the drawer and held it out to me, nervously. 'Oh, please tell me I chose the right one.'
'I have no doubt that Bella will like it,' Carlisle thought, matter-of-factly, 'After all, Esme has great taste. It's so beautiful.'
I already knew it was another wedding ring, seeing it in their minds. And, it was beautiful: a platinum band with one diamond in the middle, two smaller diamonds on the side, and two rows of four small diamonds divided a band of metal on either side.
The band had the words: 'I love you' inscribed in it. Oh, no. A bit flaunty for Bella; I could already see her roll her eyes and grumble as I gave it to her.
Nonetheless, I decided to make them happy, "I'm sure she'll love it. Thank you both. I'm sorry I was so...distant the past few days...it's just--I--I can't stand it when Bella is hurt."
"No one blames you, sweetheart." Esme said, shaking her head, "We understand. When someone you love is in pain...it destroys you. It kills you that you can't take it away. It hurts that your love for them isn't enough."
Without meaning to, Esme remembered the pain she felt in the past week for me, dying inside because nothing could help me--not even my mother's love.
I flinched involuntarily, wishing I knew how to comfort her and ease the pain I put her through. Her pain was the only pain that could affect me the same way that Bella's did. It tore me apart to see her in pain for me.
She gasped, "Edward! I'm sorry! I didnt--" She shook her head fiercely and I help up a hand to stop her.
"No, no. It's okay, Mom. Really; I'm fine."
Carlisle placed his hands on her shoulders and shushed her, whispering her name into her ear.
"I'm sorry," she said again.
"Esme," Carlisle said, in a soothing voice, "Come, love. We should leave Edward and Bella lone. You haven't hunted in twleve days; you're growing weak. I can feel it."
He stroked her arm soothingly and looked down at her pleadingly.
She nodded weakly and I said, "Go, Mom...please. I'll be fine."
She left Carlisle's side and came to hug me. "Say hi to Bella for me. I love you."
I smiled, in response, and Carlisle took Esme's hand.
Her thoughts were concerned for me and his were concerned for her.
He pulled her into him, taking her other hand, and holding both of her hands, as he looked down at her with the utmost love. "And, I love you." She smiled slightly and he quoted: " 'Love of you is mixed deep in my vitals, like water stirred into flour for bread, like simples compound in a sweet-tasting drug, like pastry and honey mixed to perfection. Oh, hurry to look at your love! Be like horses charging in a battle, Like a gardener up with the sun burning to watch his prize bud open. High heaven causes a girl's love longing. It is like being too far from the light, far from the hearth of familiar arms. It is this being so tangled in you.' "
He pulled her in closer to him and rested his forehead against hers, closing his eyes, "Don't forget what you are to me."
"Never, never." She shook her head, collapsing slightly against him, due to how weak she had become.
I placed my hand on the small of her back to ensure she was stable.
She smiled at me, "Thank you. We will return soon."
She pulled away from Carlisle, who looked at me and thought, 'My boy. Take care of your treasure...for she is everything.'
Then, they took off to go hunting, leaving me and Bella alone.
