Chapter Six:

We arrived at the orphanage a few minutes early. I barely had enough time to pull into a parking space, before Bella was out of the car. Her eyes were shining with excitement, and she had a smile on her face.

“Geez Bell,” I chuckled once I had gotten out of the car.

“I'm sorry, I can't help it, I'm so excited!” she breathed. I walked up to her and wrapped my arm around her waist, pulling her close to my side.

“I can see that,” I whispered, my lips touching just in front of her ear. I felt her shiver under my touch.

“You know that tickles.” she gasped. I smirked, and did it again,

“I know.” she pulled out of my grasp.

“Don't do this to me now Edward. What will they think when we go in there and I'm all flustered because of you?” she asked.

“That I love you very very much?” I asked. She gave me skeptical look. “Okay then, no touching until after we get home.” I surrendered, taking my arm from around her waist. She gave me a smile, before heading into the building. I followed her into the familiar plain room. “We should go into the office.” I told her.

The lady from yesterday was there again. Still reading the same book, hunched over with her huge glasses halfway down her narrow nose. I glanced down at my watch, it was two minutes to three. I sat down on the same chair I sat on yesterday, Bella sitting to my right. I watched as Bella wiggled her foot around, staring at the wall ahead of her. It seemed that it took forever, just for it to be one minute to three.

Fifty five seconds, fifty four, fifty three, fifty two, fifty one, forty nine, forty eight, forty seven,

“Edward?” Bella breathed next to me.

“Yes love?” I asked.

“What if they start asking questions about us? Like how old we are and what our jobs are. What do we tell them?” I smiled reassuringly at her.

“well, for a start, we are nine teen years old. We just finished high school, and we have a job offering in, let's say, Oklahoma city.” She raised an eyebrow.

“Why there?” I shrugged.

“It's far away from here, and that will explain why we are gone when we move up to Denali later this summer.” he told me.

“oh, that makes sense.”

“yeah. And if they ask about-”

“Mr. And Mrs. Cullen?” Our heads snapped over to a door on the opposite wall that just opened.

“Yes?” I asked, standing up.

“We're ready for you.” the man said. I offered my hand to Bella, who took it and stood up. I walked over to the man. “I'm judge Pat. Follow me please.” he said before turning his back to us and walking into the small room.

The room had a desk with some papers on it, and a light hanging over it. It, like the main room, was plain. It almost looked like an interrogation room in a jail. Judge Pat sat down on the opposite side of the desk, gesturing for us to do the same. I pulled the chair out for Bella, then sat in my own.

“Okay, first I'm going to start off with asking you a few questions about your personal life.” he started, pulling out two sheets of paper that looked like forms. “I'll start with you Mrs. Cullen. How old are you?”

“I'm nineteen.” The judges eye brows raised.

“That's awfully young to be adopting a child. Do you have job?” he questioned.

“Not right now, but we have a job offer in Oklahoma city that we will be leaving to go to later this summer.”

“Okay. What is your birthday?”

“September thirteenth.”

“Where were you born?”

“Forks, Washington.”

“Who do you live with?”

“him,” she gestured to me. “my parents in law, Dr. Carlisle Cullen, Esme Cullen, and my siblings in law, Rosalie Hale, Emmett Cullen, Alice Cullen, and Jasper Hale.”

“Are Rosalie and Jasper married?” he asked. Bella shook her head.

“No, they are adopted. Alice, Emmett and Edward here, are all brothers and sister, Rosalie and Jasper are brother and sister.”

“Oh, so your family is all adopted?” he asked me. I nodded.

“Yes. Dr. Cullen has been very good to us.” I added. “He's one of the most caring people I know.”

“That's nice.” the judge said sincerely. “I'm glad some people in this world care about orphans. Anyway, I still have some more questions for Mrs. Cullen.” he paused and looked down at the form he was filling in. “Where are your biological parents?”

“They died.” Bella answered sadly. It wasn't a lie either, they died of old age several years ago.

“I'm sorry to hear that.” The judge told her. “Do you have any other family on your side?” Bella shook her head.

“No, my parents were only children, as am I.”

“Okay. Have you gone to college at all, or are you going to?”

“we have been excepted to several colleges. Mr. Cullen and I still have not decided which ones we will go to.”

“Okay, and what will you do with,” he checked another paper to his left, “Holly, when and if you go to college?”

“My mother in law, Esme, will look after her, as well as my siblings Alice, Rosalie, Jasper and Emmett. Carlisle will most likely be working while we are at college.”

“Okay, and if neither of them are available, what would you do?”

“Well, I'm sure one of us would stay with her, after all, we will be taking the same classes so we can fill each other in.” What did that question have to do with anything, of course we wouldn't leave her alone.

“Great, now I have some questions for you Mr. Cullen.”

“How old are you?”

“Nineteen.” I answered.

“When is your birthday?”

“May 18 (i don't know his actual b-day).”

“Where were you born?”

“Chicago, Illinois.”

“I assume you live with the same people as Mrs. Cullen said?” he asked.

“Yes, I do.” I confirmed.

“Do you know your biological parents?” he asked. I paused.

“Okay, and your college plans are the same as Mrs. Cullen's?”

“Yes they are.”

“Okay. That's all the personal questions, now I have some for the both of you.”

“Great.” Bella said, sounding enthusiastic.

“What made you decide to adopt Holly?” I looked at Bella, and knew she wanted me to answer that.

“well, we can't have any children of our own, and we would really like to have our own child, so we decided that if we can't have one, then we should adopt one. I met Holly at the hospital when they had the tour, and I couldn't help but feel like . . . we were connected in some way.” he finished. Bella smirked at the irony behind that.

“Thats, nice.” he smiled. “When do you plan on putting her in school?”

“Right away.” Bella answered—right away. “Does she get lessons here?” she asked.

“Yes. The kids all have lessons from eleven to three on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.” he explained.

“Good, she might be a little behind, but not to far.” Bella said absentmindedly.

“If she ends up having any problems, would you stay with her?”

“Of course!” I answered, upset that he would think we would leaver her because of a problem.

“Good. Some people leave them if they have problems. One kid was afraid of televisions, so the family sent him back. It was quite sad.” he paused. “The last question is will she come before yourselves?”

“Always.” Bella and I answered at the same time. The judge smiled.

“Good, now all you have to do is sign these papers. While you do that, I'll go call for Holly.” he handed us both a thin folder. I opened it and there were duplicate of each sheet. I handed one of each to Bella, and we went to work signing the papers while Judge pat left the room.

“That was easier than I thought it'd be.” Bella said once the door was fully closed.

“Yes it was. I didn't think it would be so short.” I looked down at my watch. “It only took a half an hour.”

“really, it seemed like it only took five minutes.” Bella countered.

We had to sign the sheets, and they pretty much said things like, 'I (sign name here) will love this child like my own and be a responsible parent, blah blah blah.

“Done.” Bella said, picking up the papers and tapping them on the desk until they were aligned together. “Almost done Edward?” she asked.

“Almost. Just have two more things to sign.” I told her. I signed them as quickly as possible, then did the same she did, and tapped them on the table.

“Do we wait here?” She asked me.

“I think so.” our question was answered by the door opening.

“Okay, if you are done signing, you can put the papers back in the folder and come out here.” Judge pat told us. I opened the folder, placing both mine and Bella's papers into it. I stood up, offering Bella my hand, which she gladly took.

“You first, Mrs. Cullen.” I said, smiling. She scooted in front of me and walked out of the small room. Holly wasn't there yet.

“I'll take that for you,” Judge pat said, taking the small folder. “You can take this.” he handed me copy of something, and I placed it in the inside of my coat, not bothering to look at it. “It's says you are her legal guardian now, so if you lose it, just call and we can get you another one, but you'll have to go through a long process, so I advise you don't lose it.” he chuckled.

“Thank you.” I replied.

“Holly should be down shortly. Miss Jamie is helping her get her stuff together. Feel free to make yourself at home. I have to go, it was nice meeting you,” he held his hand out and I shook it. “Wow, your hands are freezing.” he said.

“Uh, yeah, they're always cold.” I said, trying to cover it up.

“So are my wife's. I guess some people just are like that.” he muttered (lol, my hands are always cold, and my feet, I'm a vampire!!)

“Uh, yeah.” I answered. He turned to Bella.

“It was nice meeting you, I hope you are happy with your new daughter.” my stomach felt weird when he said that. My daughter.

“Thank you so much Judge Pat.” Bella said, shaking his hand. “It was nice meeting you to.”

“Thank you. Have a nice day.” he turned and left the room, and I looked at Bella. She had a wide smile on her face and looked like she wanted to scream

“We've got a daughter!” she whispered yelled. “Oh Edward, it feels so great already!” I smiled, placing my hand over hers.

“It does, doesn't it.”

We stood by the door, the lady at the desk occasionally looking up at us and smiling. It had been five minutes since the judge had left, and still Holly had not come down.

“What's taking so long?” Bella complained. “I can't wait forever.” I smiled, and quickly pecked her on the lips.

“I'm sure she's saying good bye to every one, she'll be down soon.”

“I hope your right.” she replied. I hope I'm right to. Bella's eagerness is not helping my own nerves.

A few more minutes later, I heard an excited voice on the stairs.

“Are they really here?” she asked.

“Yes Holly, I told you four times.” a soft voice said. That must be Miss Jamie. “Did you get everything?”

“Yeah! I even got my teddy back from Elise.” her voice was proud.

“Elise had your teddy? I thought you lost it?”

“Me too, but Elise took it cause she said it was soft.” Holly told her matter of factually. Their voices were getting closer, and I knew she was almost to the bottom. They didn't talk the rest of the way down, so when they entered, I was surprised at how quickly they got here.

Holly's face was bright and her eyes were shinning. She had on her usual outfit. A blue cotton skirt, and a white blouse. Alice was going to have so much fun teacher her about fashion, not to mention dressing her up. Holly ran over to me, her long hair trailing behind her. She threw her arms around my waist, looking up at me with her chin resting on my stomach. She was so small, her head barely reached above my belly button.

“Edward!” she squealed, her cute vice high.

“Hello Holly.” I said, smiling. Bella shifted next to me, and I knew she wanted to say hi to Holly too. “Do you remember Bella, Holly?” I asked. She nodded, turning her head to see Bella.

“Hi. Your Edwards wive.” Bella chuckled.

“Yes, I'm Edwards wive.” (wrong spelling cause she said it wrong). “Are you ready to go?” she asked. Bella couldn't wait to get her home and show her her room and the rest of the family. Holly turned to the young lady who just walked in the room.

“Miss Jamie can I go?” she asked. Miss Jamie smiled.

“of course you can Holly. They're your family now.” she turned to look at me. “Here is her bag. It has some of her toys and clothes that came here with her.” I got Holly to let go of me, and went over and took the small kiddie suit case from Miss Jamie.

“ready?” I asked Bella. She nodded and took Holly's hand. I let them go in front of me, nodding thanks to Miss Jamie, and followed the now two most important people in my life out the door..

Holly's eyes widened when she saw the car, and I chuckled lightly.

“Wow!” she squeaked. “Is this your car?”

“It is.” I answered, opening my door and putting the suit case in the back. Bella opened her door and flipped the front seat forward so Holly could in. I watched as Bella leaned in and helped Holly get buckled in. They both looked euphoric. Bella's eyes were shinning a brilliant liquid topaz, and Holly smiled as she let Bella buckle her in.

“Ready?” Bella asked, once she took her place in the front seat.

“yup.” I nodded, starting the car. I knew that driving with Holly, I would have to go slower than normal, but still, she wouldn't know the difference between speeding and going the normal speed limit. “so Holly, are you excited to see your room?” I asked.

“My room? I get my own room?” she asked excitedly.

“Of course! You need a place to sleep don't you?” Holly nodded vigorously. “Are you excited to meet the rest of the family?”

“Are they nice?” Holly asked.

“They are very nice, and excited to meet you.” I told her.

“yes I'm very excited.” she said. I chuckled at the tone in her voice. She sounded so sure of herself. Everything about her was positive, that I know of so far. There was a pause where no one spoke. I looked back at Holly in the rear view mirror. She was looking out the window, her eyes glazed over.

“Hey Holly, do you want to go on a picnic tomorrow?” I asked her. She turned her head to look at me, her eyes meeting mine in the mirror.

“What's a picnic?” she asked.

“It's when you go pack a lunch and eat it outside.” I told her. Her eyes lit up.

“Really? I've gone on a nicpic!” she squealed.

“Picnic.” I corrected her. “Bella and I know a beautiful place to go. Would you like that?” I asked her.

“Yeah yeah yeah yeah!” she said, clapping her hands and kicking her feet. Bella let out a snort of laughter next to me, and I couldn't help but smile. This was going to be fun.
