Chapter 5 (Edward’s POV)
Why had I agreed to this again? I thought as I helped Alice take her boxes out of the car. She’d coned me and Jasper into unloading the truck of her clothes for her somehow.
I turned around and there was Bella. I winced thinking of the name.
"Okay what’s changed since yesterday?" She asked poking me in the head.
"I don’t know what you mean." I said walking past her into the house.
"What I mean is, that yesterday your head was empty, I could read it but there was nothing to read you were a functional vegetable. Now there is thoughts whirling around your head like a crazy balloon. What happened?" She asked following me with another box.
"Oh Bella you don’t have to do that Edward’s fine getting the boxes." Alice said dancing up to us. She’d spent the last three hours setting up her closet how she liked it with, me and Jasper bringing her box after box of clothes to add to the mass.
"It’s fine," Bella said sweetly. She followed me all the way up the first staircase, probably waiting for an answer. Well too bad for her I wasn’t going to give her one.
"I heard that," she said stepping in front of me and walking backwards up the second flight of stairs.
"Heard what?" I asked playing dumb there was no way I was going to answer that question. It was embarrassing and I felt guilty for even feeling like I did.
"What’s embarrassing? Why are you guilty? You keep skating around the subject matter in your head. Stop it!" She said, laughing as she said the last bit.
"Not used to people being able to hide stuff from you huh?" I asked laughing too. I stopped abruptly. I hadn’t laughed in years. The hell?
Bella wasn’t reading my mind just then, because she laughed with me saying, "Not in that way. It’s not fair you’re just giving me little hints here and there that are impossible to figure out. Usually everyone just starts singing the most annoying song they can think of."
I laughed again this time not able to stop it. I don’t know how many times Alice did that to me. "It’s annoying isn’t it?" I asked her.
"No kidding. Last Christmas I went around the house for two weeks hearing that one Girlfriend song by Averill Lavingne or whatever. They all ganged up on me. I had a headache for weeks." She was looking at me weird after she finished. "Are you okay?" She asked after a second. By this time we were on the third and final staircase. She was still walking backwards looking at me with a concerned expression.
"Yeah why?" I asked her. I was confused and a bit out of my element sure but nothing was really wrong with me.
"You were so depressed and empty yesterday. I didn’t want to say anything ‘cause I just met you but I was worried, and now today you’re normal. Laughing even. What’s up?" I realized she was right. I was almost happy. I hadn’t felt like this since I left Bella.
"I don’t know. It just feels right again." I said grimacing and walking past her and into Alice and Jasper’s new room I took the box I had into the closet where Alice sat cross legged sorting her clothes. Bella followed after me setting her box down, then turned and laughed.
"I have to go break up a fight," she said half laughing then disappearing out the door yelling, "Lucy put Techno down! You can’t throw him out the window!"
"She’s cool," Alice said as I put down the box I had on top of Bella’s.
"Yeah, " I said agreeing with her. I didn’t notice the look she had on her face until I straightened up again. "What?" I asked looking at her with an annoyed look. She always read way too far into things and her thoughts were going into dangerous territory.
"Alice I don’t like her like that. Bella from ten years ago is the only one I’ll ever love." I said sighing. I could never love anyone as much as I had loved Bella, and I didn’t want to. This new Bella would forever be just a friend, no matter how cool she was.
"Oh I know." Alice said going back to her clothes and humming a happy tune that sounded suspiciously like the song Bella had mentioned earlier.
Sure enough a second later we heard Bella scream that whoever was singing that damned song to shut up. I laughed heading down the stairs to get another box.
