Chapter Three

Laurent caught her scent when he returned from his trip. I was still out with Alice when he got home. I was going to have to explain myself and her presence and I also knew that this conversation was probably not going to end very well. I really hadn’t thought about what I would say to him if I had ever found the Cullens. My vampire mind couldn’t formulate the right answer for this moment.

He was waiting for me in the kitchen when I got home.

Uh-oh. He looked pissed.

Crouched in a defensive manner, all I could do was stare at him.

“I’m sorry.” I really was.

“Bella, would you care to explain why I would recognize the new scent in our home?”

“About that,” I said confidently, “the Cullens are here. Alice saw us in one of her visions. She came to see me. Believe me, Laurent, I had no idea they were here.”

“Yes, how could you have known? Still, this changes things.”

“Do you still bear a grudge against the Cullen’s? Will this be a problem?”

“To be honest Bella, I never really had a grudge against them. That was between Victoria and Edward. I am starting to think that you had something planned from the beginning. Am I correct? If so, I commend you. Humans are smarter than they look.”

I smiled, slightly embarrassed.

“So, you do not have a problem with this?”

“No.”

“Excellent. I better start getting ready for school. Big day you know.”

“Hmm.” He paused briefly. “Have a good day, I guess.” Finally, a smile crept across his face.

That wasn’t as bad as I thought.

When I got into the driver’s seat of my Audi, a sudden feeling of dread struck me.

Alice may have been happy to see me, but what would the others think?

Has Jasper’s guilt for the events that happened on my birthday, which led to the day Edward left, subsided? Does beautiful Rosalie still hate me? Will Emmett still think of me as his little sister? Most importantly, what will Edward do when he sees me?

All I could think about right now was seeing his face for the first time in five years. Slowly, the dread disappeared and once again, hope overwhelmed me.

I waited until classes had already begun to check in for my first day. My Audi blended in just fine among the other cars in the parking lot. Salem was definitely a far cry from Forks. I walked up to the main office and approached the boy at the counter.

“Hello, I am Isabella Washington,” not a very creative last name but we had to decide quickly, “I’m here to check in for my first day.”

The boy at the counter looked at me. Stunned. Shocked.

Great, it had already started. Thinking about it now, I was going to have to work on my “human” voice. I haven’t had many conversations with humans since my change and I was well aware of the affect a vampire’s voice had on humans.

“Uhhh, let me get Mrs. Harris for you. Wait right here.”

He tripped over his own shoes on his way to her office. Odd, I found this slightly familiar. I chuckled.

Mrs. Harris appeared from her office, stopping briefly to observe me, raised an eyebrow then finally, handed me my class schedule.

“Isabella Washington. Here we go. Class schedule and a map of the school attached to the back. You missed first period but the bell is about to ring so you’ll be heading to the science department for AP Biology with Mr. Hunter. If you have any questions, I’m sure any of the students in the hall would be more than willing to help.” I sensed a slight hint of sarcasm to that last sentence but paid it no mind. I thanked her and made my way to the hallway just as the bell rang.

Just in time to see Edward exit his class.

Just in time to see the expression of confusion, horror and longing on his face as Alice, grinning, dragged him passed me to their next class.
