Chapter 5

“The sweetest goodbye” Maroon 5

I tried to slip carefully through the hall unnoticed. All day it felt like Edward was looking for me, so (naturally) I was trying to avoid him. I was going to skip Spanish.

“Eep!” I squeaked, slamming into something hard and cold and tumbling back, if he didn’t catch me I would have thought it was the wall.

“Will you watch where you’re going?!” Edward snapped, pulling me upright.

“Will you not snap at me?!” I hissed back. He back peddled, both annoyed and amused by my fighting back.

“What’s your problem?!” I said bitterly.

“What’s my problem?! What’s my problem?!” he said, shocked.

“Ya, Edward, what’s your problem?! You’ve been…” I stopped, as if trying to find the correct word, “I don’t know-weird. All day.” I snapped my fingers in mock recognition, “Stalker-ish! That’s it!”

“A little conceded, aren’t we?” he answered, crossing his arms.

I did the same, “You’re point?”

When was it going to stop? Edward being rude to me. Me denying him, and how I feel. The arguing. Me being late to class.

He shook his head and smiled a mocking smile, I was getting ready to yell at him when we were interrupted by the bell, I hurried off to fifth period: science with Angie and Mr. Capp.

So was Edward.

“What the-?” I stopped, “Where are you going?!”

“You’ve got to be kidding me!” I hissed, shooting off down the hall and then entering class.

Edward was less than three feet behind.

Angie shot me a where-were-you? look.

“Muah, muah, muah,” I boy across the class said, I fired a watch-it-kid-or-I’ll-crush-you face. at him and blew him a kiss. His friends started laughing as the blood drained from his face.

I took my seat next to my best friend and Edward joined me. As soon as he sat down I considered him dead and tried to talk to Angela, but she had her “WTF?!” face on so it’d be impossible to ignore him.

“Wha-?” she started.

“No,” I mouthed, “So Ang., guess what?” I said aloud. She turned to face me fully showing me I had her full attention, “Apparently Edward Cullen came out.”

She responded just like she was supposed to, “Of the closet?”

Everyone around us laughed, I snuck a peak at Edward, not a drop of embarrassment, just amused, like I was a kitten or bug.

I laughed too, though it was tinted with annoyance, “No, he’s kinda been stalking me all day,” I leaned in and whispered loudly to her, “What if he follows me home?!”

She giggled, covering her mouth. Edward’s expression turned cold. I’d apparently hit a nerve.

Mr. Capp stepped in then, “If you’re quiet done Miss Swan,-”

“Not really,” I muttered as Angela giggled.

“-I’d like to get us all loaded onto the buses.”

“Oh, right we have a field trip today right, to the forests outside of La Push to go on a scavenger hunt.” Lara Simmons said. I rolled my eyes. Teacher’s pet.

“Yes, very good Miss Simmons!” Mr. Capp said. Again, I rolled my eyes. Pathetic.

We all quickly filed out of the school, loading into the three buses out front. The other four classes were joining us apparently.

I wasn’t paying attention, and Edward, whom I decided to completely ignore got to his family, and, unthinkingly, I joined them.

“What do you want?” Rosalie snapped.

“I want you to go away, shoo fly shoo.”

“Look at her, the ‘almightily most popular’!” she hissed, “I am graced by her mere presence.”

“That’s the desired effect,” I smiled back at her like she was fawning over me, looking down at her even though she was taller, and hoped it would annoy her.

It worked, she huffed out a hissing noise.

“Oh, please, Barbie. You’re just jealous.” I said.

Her glare burned, “Jealous? Of a pathetic little girl?”

I flew at her, ready to have her daddy have to buy her a new nose.

Alice caught me and held me back. “Gawd,” she said, “She’s worse than Jasper.” Her boyfriend snorted.

“So,” Alice said, “are you riding with us?”

I straightened up.

“Our bus is full,” Edward said quickly.

I glared at him, then an idea sparked in my head, “Yes,” I said, reaching over to grab Alice’s hand, “it is,”

And I pulled her into the bus, Jasper smirking as he, Rosalie – apparently this made up for a few seconds ago, since she was grinning from ear to ear, kinda creepy, but still – and Emmett followed us in and the doors closed. I saw Edward shoot them a dirty look in my peripheral. I’m sure Jasper knew, though I don’t know why. He seemed to be suppressing a snicker.

I took my seat in the back next to Jessica and tugged Alice over with me. Jasper just sat next to her and both Jess and Alice’s boyfriend opened their books and began to read. Alice giggled and turned to give me her full attention, she knew I needed to talk to her.

“Okay, what’s up with your brother?” I asked.

“Who? Emme-?” her eyes widening in false innocence.

“You know who.”

She sighed, then looked at me carefully for a bit, she seemed to be deciding something. Her eyes went hazy for a second and then she had this determined defiance on her face, Jasper lightly touched her arm, but she payed him no notice.

She took a deep breath, “Hereallylikesyoubutisafraidheisn’tgoodenough!” she blurted quietly.

I back peddled, “Why?!”

“He…um…he’s complicated.” She muttered, wringing her tiny hands together in worry, like a child who knew they were introuble, “We move a lot and he doesn’t want to hurt you.”

I shifted uncomfortable for a moment, realizing this was the first time I really liked a boy in years.

“I don’t mind, I hate Forks anyway, that’s the only thing me and my stupid mothe-” I stopped myself, “I wouldn’t mind leaving here.”

“Yeah, that and he’s stubborn.”

“You’re not…normal, are you?” I whispered.

A hard look came to her eyes, “Like I said, complicated.”

“Bella?” I heard behind me.

“Yeah?” I said, turning around.

“I really don’t think we can be in a group,” Edward said desperately.

“Sure we can, we just need one more person,”

“Alice?” Edward half begged.

“I have to be with Jasper,” she answered.

I caught the double meaning.

He sighed, I leaned over and grabbed Lauren, she smiled at him and lined up with Jess, Angela, me, Edward, a kid named Zack, and a kid named Walker.

I needed a perfectly even number of boys and girls who bickered to get approved, it’s always been easy for me to fly under the adult radar, and it worked, Mr. Capp approved us without a second thought and we were off into the woods.

“Why so droopy man?” Zack asked, slapping Edward on the back, “You were handpicked by the hottest girl in school, Bella Swan! Cheer up!”

I giggled and blushed, but I saw Edward’s jaw tighten.

“What’s that?!” Jessica shrieked after walking for about twenty minutes. We had fifteen out of the twenty items on the list checked off, all by me or Edward. Though it wasn’t without conflict. Lauren, in fact, had brought it up:

“What’s wrong with you two? You fight like a married couple!” “In her/his dreams!” Was both of our immediate responses, then we turned to glare at each other and continue searching.

There was a low growl and everyone whipped around to find a bear thirty or so yards away.

“Bella,” Lauren asked, “how fast can a black bear run?”

I gulped, “35 miles an hour.”

She whimpered.

“Don’t worry, they only eat plants and nuts and stuff, right Bella?” Walker said slowly moving his hands to the walkie talkie, he-save Edward and I- was the calmest one in the group.

“Yeah, DON’T anybody run,” I said soothingly.

With that, the girls took off, and the boys ran to restrain them.

When I turned around, the bear was gone, I was the only one besides Edward.

His eyes were lighter.

I felt a pang of irrational fear and took off in the direction or the others, tripping over a tree root and falling on my knee. My arm was sliced by a tree branch and warm blood flowed down my arm as I gasped out loud.

My breathing hitched and sped up as I turned to face the vampire.
