I felt like a hole in my heart that I had bore for so long had just been filled in. Walking through the studio, I smiled at open mouths. Since Edward left, I had become more confident, but I was sure, and their shocked expressions told me, that they had never seen me so elated before. I could not stop smiling.
Edward was back, he was really back. I shook my head unbelievingly and bit back another smile.
“Hey,” someone said from behind me. I turned around and faced Brett. “What’s up?” he asked.
“Nothing,” I said, grinning at him. He rolled his eyes.
“Come on, Isabella. Everyone wants to know what’s going on with you!”
I frowned, pretending I had no clue what he was talking about. “What is going on? Nothing is going on with me. Why would you think that?”
He smirked. “Because you can’t keep that smile off your face,” he pointed out. I looked at him sheepishly.
“So, can’t I be happy?” I challenged. He looked skeptical.
“Yes,” he replied slowly, “but you’ve never been this happy. I’d heard that it was because your boyfriend left you.”
“Who told you that?” I demanded.
“It’s true?” he asked.
“You did not answer my question,” I snapped. He just shrugged at me.
“You didn’t answer mine about why you were so happy,” Brett said. I scowled at him angrily and began to turn away, but someone was in my way.
“Hey, Bella,” Edward said. I gulped and looked back at Brett, who was grinning at me. “Who’s this?” Edward asked, motioning to Brett.
“Uh, Edward, this is Brett Jones. He played the main character in the movie I finished making. Brett, this is, uh, Edward,” I murmured. They shook hands.
“Isabella, I have to get going. Nice seeing you,” he said, nodding to Edward.
Edward looked at me. “He played the vampire?”
He shook his head. “He doesn’t look like a vampire. Too tan.”
I nodded again. Then, I suddenly brightened. “Oh, we’re going to see the preview for our movie. Do you want to come?”
“Sure,” he said, and let me lead him to the studio. I took my place in the big theater and he chose the seat next to me. He pulled me towards him and put his arm around my shoulders. I sighed in delight and leaned my head against his shoulder as the lights dimmed and the huge screen lit up. My face was the first to show, followed quickly by Brett and the other, more minor, characters. I watched in fascination at how the fight scenes that had seemed so fake while acting had been transformed into a lifelike series of images. With Edward next to me, and my career soaring, I was sure nothing could ever happen again; my life would be as happy as I was then forever.
When the preview ended, the lights slowly came on and applause burst out, followed by cheers and cries of my name. A few people came up to congratulate me as everyone filed out of the theater, but I did not pay much attention to them; how could I when Edward Cullen was right next to me?
We walked out of the theater together, my hand fitted tightly into his, and I saw in the distance six figures walking towards us. My eyes brightened and I squirmed out of Edward’s grip and broke out into a run towards the smallest of the group.
Alice Cullen reached me far before I reached her, and she welcomed me with a fierce hug. I greeted every one of the Cullen family much the same, except for Rosalie, to whom I gave a warm handshake.
“Bella, I missed you so much!” Alice said enthusiastically. “We have so much to catch up on! I can’t believe you’re a movie star! I’ve seen every one of your movies! They’re amazing!”
“Slow down,” I laughed, and hugged her again.
I was too busy chatting with my friend to notice that Carlisle had pulled Edward aside to have a serious discussion. Only Rosalie, who was obviously not all that fascinated with my sudden return, noticed, and hurried over to join them.
They returned to our little group minutes later, their formerly gleeful faces all grim. Just seeing their expressions wiped the smiles off our faces.
“What is it?” I asked. Alice bit her lip nervously and looked at Carlisle for permission to speak. Carlisle nodded his consent.
“Uh, we’re here for a particular reason,” she began slowly, taking one small step back. “I had a vision just after Edward left to find you.” She stopped, and searched my face expectantly.
“What is it?” I repeated.
“The Volturi found out that you’re still human, and they’re coming. Now.”
